I always have issues with .jar files, so this might not be true for others, but on the Windows build I'm getting "A Java Exception has occurred". Did you include all the libraries/etc?

lunke 2015-04-20 20:22

Yes. On mine it works though, but I will try to figure it out :)

So the idea is nice and the game is quite difficult. Since it's your first LD i think you did pretty good!

Attempted to run on Ubuntu and got the following error:

Fits in with the theme, Had okay salt shaker shooting mechanics...Not bad!

lucidsheep 2015-04-21 06:12

The levels were a little easy to abuse - you can just circle strafe all day on levels 1 and 2, and hide in the corner (behind salt refills) on level 3. It froze up mid-way on level 4 unfortunately. Great idea for an unconventional weapon!

landosystems 2015-04-21 06:14

Bummer... I'm still running Java 7 so I can't play it yet.

jmborden 2015-04-21 06:15

So this is the second salt and slugs game I've seen. That makes at least three (including mine!). I realllly wanted to play this, but unfortunately it is not running on my Mac =(.

Nice Idea,,, like Snes Graphics.. almost

onetrueaaron 2015-04-21 13:10

Fun game! Very smooth all around, and very responsive. Pretty funny premise, too. Good job!

jajo 2015-04-21 15:28

I'm the same age as you using the same language, however I must ask if you used any libraries? The game is difficult, but certainly fun ;)

lunke 2015-04-21 15:59

I made it using Java and no external libraries. The rendering was done by creating a bufferedimage and rendering that once per frame. I know the audio could be improved.. Not my strongest side ;) Thank you for the feedback though :)

sorlok 2015-04-21 23:47

Interesting and fun. It was a little hard to aim; usually the fire direction follows the mouse (not the character's facing direction) in these types of games.

lucentbeam 2015-04-21 23:48

Nice work! I enjoyed the graphics and the gameplay. By the second or third level it started getting a little tedious with how long the timer was... But the 4th level was a fresh change! Unfortunately, when I died on it, I wasn't quite up to chugging through the first three again.

crumpet 2015-04-21 23:51

I think you seriously need to up the range you can fire at. As it stands, it can be very difficult to hit anything without getting all cuddly and up in their grill.

Also, as a jam entry, I feel you really missed out on a chance to put some sweet music in (I'd personally recommend the Newgrounds audio portal, a lot of good stuff which the authors give you the right to use).

Don't just drop this, at least make a small Post compo version. At the very least throw in the two suggestions I made, see if they work for you. You have a solid game, I just think a couple of things can be done to make that more obvious :)

All the best, and well done!

fluffy-tigers-in-the-sky 2015-04-24 21:39

The game is fun, graphics and sound are solid. I would have liked if there is some kind of feedback, if the player gets hit, you can only see that the amount of hearts shrinks. The gameplay mechanics are well-known but you managed to fit the theme by having a salt shaker as a weapon drying out the enemies.

crowbeak 2015-04-26 04:30

Well done for a first entry. I like the particle effects.

antisc2 2015-05-07 16:38

A nice project for your first ludum dare. Pretty good overall!

dcrfj15 2015-05-08 19:13

Good job. I really liked the mechanics of having to reload the salt shaker. The game was well balanced and it was fun to play. I managed to get to level 4 one time, but then I died. Also, the particles were nice.
