yeah i have to change that name :P
give me a second
This game has its own graphical personality. The knight is takes his time to attack, it slows the gameplay. But great work for a one man 48 hour project ! Too sad his weapon is not the golden spoon. Maybe he gets it later in the game. I will check that later !
Thank you!
Immediate recommendation: When submitting Ludum Dare projects with GameMaker, export your game as a Single Runtime Executable, this means the player doesn't have to install it and can just delete the exe when they're done with it.
When I go into any of the menus, the flame effects appear over the banner. Though that is some gorgeous lighting! That's the kind of lighting I dream of having in GM. Either you're a really good GML programmer or you cheated and used someone else's lighting engine XD
It's a bit redundant to have the Instructions menu in there if you're going to display it when I click Start anyway.
The goblins kill you too quickly, by the time I notice they're hurting me, I've died. This is especially irritating on the second goblin in the game. I can't hit him when I'm on the higher ledge, but if I take a ledge down, I'm now in range of him but he is also in range of me, and basically insta-kills me.
I couldn't play much more before getting frustrated with how quickly goblins kill me. Which is a shame because this game is beautiful and I would've liked to have seen more. I think you've wasted too much effort onto the background art, since it's so dark I can barely see it.
I think just a bit more polish could've helped it.
Cool game. Can't pass the second baddie :S
The game ambient feels great :)
Great that you have fun creating it. I did too on this (first) LD game.
Thanks for sharing.
What exe should i download? i downloaded '-NEW- Toothpick Knights Final Release 5', is that right?
Got it, great fun :) Love the lighting and mood. Good audio use too. I got past the castle and then died at the long line of bad guys. couldnt get past them. Great entry though!
The only way I've found to kill enemies is to attack from a ledge. Otherwise they kill you too fast.
@Finn The lighting is basicly a dark gray surface that is drawn over the view. The lights then create white/yellow circles on that surface and merges that with the surface.
Also the key to fighting is kiting ;) attack -> turn and walk -> turn -> attack and repeat.
@Thepattybeast Yes that one. But it should be renamed to "The Quest for the Golden Spoon" now.
Alright game, the combat is awkward since you have to be at a certain height to hit the opponents and if they are on a ledge below you you frequently can't hit them and you die very quickly.
Very good looking, but not really fun and not innovative at all.
Very good ambience and lighting!
I loved the screenshots. But the game itself could play smoother I guess. Still looks good though. The weapon is not tooooo unconventional either... ;-)
I like this game! The monsters do a ton of damage tho! I like the lighting effect!
Very difficult, if the enemies did slightly less damage, the lack of checkpoints wouldn't be an issue, I died right near the end. Overall, very well rounded, good job!
Fun game, found the combat pretty difficult though
I liked it! The atmosphere was pretty nice, the story was interesting, and the mechanics had a bit of a meta-gaming feel to them.
The only downside I would say this game has is that it's a bit hard. I found death came a bit too quickly, and you're pretty much just dead if you do more than tap an enemy, so starting over was a bit harsh.
Other than that, though, it was pretty fun! Great job!
I liked it. It had great atmosphere and lighting!
Amg. Lighting is a great touch to this entry. I felt it was a bit too short for an adventure, but it shows thought and a lot of effort.
The effects are well done (torches, lighting), you have background music (I assume generated with Otomata) which fits the theme.
The graphics style is consistent and you have a lot of graphics (huts, castle, shops) which is pretty cool for 48 hours.
Still I think the gameplay could have used some more speed.
When enemies touch you you'll die pretty fast. Jump height isn't too big, speed of the player is too slow. You can only attack enemies from a ledge, otherwise you'll die too soon. It would be cool to jump across enemies to attack them from behind. Upgrades for weapon would be nice too.
But don't take my complains too serious - it's a very nice game overall and well done for the compo time frame!
You die too fast when you touch a goblin. Otherwise it's a good game!
great game overall
