my favorite game so far... the plants are great and there are no seeable bugs(in the code) good job and nice bug sounds.

Wow, impressive. Loving the visuals of the water.

xpoint 2012-04-23 08:16

Nice concept, nice graphics. Not really difficult though.

redwater 2012-04-23 09:26

Interesting, we basically built the same game :D
Love you'r water smoothing, how did you do it?
I'm in the #ludumdare chat as <wzl>. hit me up if you like :D

Okay game, but a bit boring... it really needs a life/death cycle so that if the ants are happy they produce more. At the moment you can easily set up a static system with everything necessary and just leave it. More dynamic stuff would have been great! One bug I found is that I had no sound (Chrome).

Can't get a bigger population (Stays at 8) D:
Love the concept through

Nice landscape engine. The graphics are very simple but i guess they work for this game. Very easy and not much playtime, though. Heard no sound (tried Chrome and IE).

Ah. Once you get the idea of the water that floats the bugs and the possibility to let water flow out at the bottom, it's pretty interesting. But it gets a bit boring after a while. As if something was missing. Can't tell what. Some sort of a target. It had no sound for me - Opera on Win32.

brackeen 2012-04-23 14:29

Hey thanks for the compliments guys.
- For the water smoothing - each cell has a mass from 0 to 1, so water can lay flat.
- Besides getting the bugs to the top by floating them in water, the bugs can also jump 2-3 cells across to reach higher ledges. So they can go up zig-zag shaped tunnels.
- No spawning, although that would be fun to add.
- Once you set it up so the bugs can get food and water, if you leave it running in the background for a while, the bugs will eventually drink all the water in their path, then die of thirst! Also, the bugs can destroy the plants by eating them faster than the plants can rejuvenate. It's like an aquarium - it needs tending to now and then.

Jan Willem says ...
Not really difficult though.
I think I would have to agree. It is a good time waster but I don't think it was super fun. It was pretty cool though. nice job.

myfrosch 2012-04-23 16:33

Nice Concept.

dedhedzed 2012-04-23 17:45

Nifty. Kept trying to drown them all. Eventually succeeded. Probably says a lot about me...

alwaysgeeky 2012-04-23 19:02

Good concept, reminds me of old school simulation games used for education. :)

McFunkypants 2012-04-23 20:44

Wonderful concept. Totally original. I'd love to see this fleshed out into a bigger game. I love the sandbox physics and simulation aspect. Wish there were "plant seeds". A truly awesome effecrt, totally fresh and very impressive.

kogasilverdragon 2012-04-23 21:38

Interesting concept! Would be more dynamic and maybe, have levels with objectives.

rawbits 2012-04-23 21:59

As Nocturne sad it need some more action like breeding and death by ageing.

But what is in there is nicely done! Good game! :)

rawbits 2012-04-23 22:05

I have found something that I don't kno if it's really a bug. One of the plants after growing 1 block (and touches dirt above) shrinks 1 block and a dirt from nowhere appeares to the left of it.

With this growing/shinking the plant basically creates dirt and burries itself with it...

rybar 2012-04-23 22:51

Fun little sandbox idea, but the population never grew, despite having plenty of plants. The lack of any sort of behavior beyond traversing back and forth across the terrain mindlessly and occasionally eating got boring quickly.

catman 2012-04-24 17:46

Nice graphics and idea, I just want a little more to play with! :)

ad-edge 2012-05-01 09:55

Fun little game, I like how the super simple graphics add to the overall game nicely. Was a bit easy though, I managed tog et a few plants around and even up the terrain, the bugs seemed happy after that. Some additional things (like enemies coming along or fire etc) would have added to the difficulty and challenge.

davidllanos22 2012-05-12 14:47

I filled everything with water and now the bugs hate me :C Nice little game and I love the physics of the water!

vigrid 2012-05-13 01:20

Fun concept, a perfect example how simple behaviors can lead to emergence of complexity - unfortunately I wasn't able to achieve much - I was left with my original 8 bugs, but I enjoyed how the little buggers ate plants.
