My idea behind the NPCs changing, after the player quits his job, was that up to that point, the player character wasn't paying any attention to his co-workers, hence the silhouettes and garbled text when they speak. After he quits, he's happy; the way he views the hallway changes and he is actually seeing his co-workers.
