LD42 — Running out of space

Open Spaces by Frederika 2018-08-17T21:39:29Z

Really well done game!

I'm on the same team as @mister-kweh, and we were happy to see another group tackle something similar to us (different topics, but similar mood/tone/presentation).

I really liked how yours had options that led to different scenarios. I actually played through a few times because I was curious how the other responses would turn out. Our team had planned on doing something similar, but we weren't able to squeeze it in with the limited time.

I'm very impressed you were able to make such a unique game, especially with the varying situations.

Also, thanks for checking out our game :)

Really awesome game! It was definitely challenging, but very fun. The whole concept was really original. Good job!

(Spoilers) - Only issue I had was that the guy in the social room wouldn't convert the m -> n on any word. The only time it was used was for the word "blind." I had it as "blimd," but it wouldn't convert. I restarted the game thinking it may have been bugged, but got the same issue at that spot. It turns out it would only switch the m to n if the word was "dmilb." No other combinations would allow it to swap. Not sure if this was intentional, but it took me forever to get this. Other than that and a few minor glitches with the movement, very well done. I'd love to play an even longer version!

Really fun game! I definitely played a lot longer than I was expecting lol.

One thing that I noticed though that got a bit frustrating was that the trucks never seemed to bring the red blocks to my businesses.

They seemed to always prioritize the factories, so the cycle would end up like: - Truck brings Red to Factory - Factory makes Black and Purple - Truck brings Black to Apartment and Purple to Business - Apartment makes Red - Repeat

This ended up with my businesses having tons of purple, but rarely got the reds they needed to make the "good stuff."

I also kind of wish you could destroy/rebuild roads since I kind of messed up some placements towards the beginning. Agree with other comments that sound effects/audio would be a nice touch too.

Really fun and addicting game though!

Really fun game! I didn't like the starting person because she didn't like kids so I fired her right away. Bad idea haha.

It's a really cool concept though that definitely takes quite a bit of planning. I'm kind of curious how it would play out though if you slowed the pace down and didn't allow pausing. It might make things more hectic (maybe a different game mode for this?).

The first time I finished, I was a bit disappointed I couldn't keep going after 100k. After my second play though (when I knew what I was doing), I see why you ended it there. At that point, I had all the authors I needed to always produce "good" stories. There wouldn't have been much else to do after that.

The names were a bit strange, but I was much more focused on their attributes anyway. I'm guessing all the traits are randomized, but if you continue developing this game, maybe add in a few limitations, so they can't be both pro-conservative AND pro-liberal or things like that. Might make it feel a bit more realistic.

Great game overall, and I especially loved the UI. Very clean.

@kapiteinkoekwous @netguy204 @thesomeonexd @saoi-games @rexpeppers

Thank you all for playing and leaving your feedback! We're glad you enjoyed it.

And netguy- After LD41, we had discussed possibly doing a serious game for this one. When the theme was announced and we were brainstorming ideas, we thought of doing something related to "running out of space in your mind." None of us had much knowledge of dementia, but we thought that may be a way of looking it, albeit vastly oversimplified. After doing some research and discussing with people we know who have first-hand experience with the disease, we believed it would fit the theme and allow us to challenge ourselves with the topic. Sorry for the long-winded answer, but that's kind of how we came up with the idea based on the theme. We should probably explain this somewhere, because you're right. It's definitely not an obvious connection.

@ursagames Thank you so much for playing it! Watching your play-through on stream was really encouraging, and it was the first time I really felt like we had achieved the reactions we were striving for. I've actually watched your play-through now three times (watched the VOD with my roommate @kovakomes, who was sleeping at the time, and again with the other two group members when we all met up on Wednesday). We really appreciate the feedback and being able to see your reaction.

Btw, your stream is great! Everyone was really cool. I'll definitely try and hang out in there sometime!

@saoi-games I just finished watching the video of your play-through.

Thank you so much for playing our game! It really is a beautiful feeling for all us to hear your response.

I think you honestly described our game better than we could have at the end - the shift from knowing nothing while the character knows everything to the player knowing everything and the character nothing. I had never thought of it that way, but it really is a perfect description of the story.

Thank you again.

NOT TODAY DAN AND BOB!

I managed to escape, but it took A LOT of tries. This was a really fun game, and had great humor throughout (seemed like a blend of Portal and Saw).

Definitely challenging though, and the turret are brutal.

One thing I noticed though is buying the 150 or 300 tiles didn't seem to do much, if anything. My strategy ended up being to buy 75 tiles once I hit 14 lemons to give myself a semi-reset before the turrets came out. Then I just prayed I could find the 10 before getting sniped or panicking and falling lol.

Idea for later - maybe have oranges or another citrus show up once the turrets come that stun them for a time?

Overall, a really fun and challenging game.

Running Out of Space by iLoveYourFace 2018-08-14T23:55:19Z

Fantastic game! Definitely not the fastest method it seems, but I managed to get 0 cubes left, so I'm counting it as a win lol.

Really like the way the blocks fade in as you're running. And the high scores is an awesome feature!

Only gripe I have is no full screen mode. Whenever I died, I'd have to sort of re-calibrate my mouse, or else it would move off the game window and I'd lose the ability to move.

Overall really fun!

Man in box by Darkwing00Duck 2018-08-14T22:55:53Z

Took a bit to learn the controls, but I was able to beat it. Really cool puzzle concept. Movement took a while getting used to, especially being able to jump off a platform.

I also kept forgetting to use "C" when I entered a teleport spot, which was a bit frustrating.

Overall, challenging and fun!

Trial by Fire by CorgiRam 2018-08-15T02:15:45Z

I'm going to disagree with some of the other comments in here. I actually enjoy having the character control as WASD and the looking around with the mouse. Maybe I'm just used to RPGs where that's common. If you plan on working on this game further, maybe consider adding an option for keybinds or a setting for mouse/keyboard vs. keyboard only?

The game itself was really fun! Definitely challenging and requires quite a bit of strategy to last more than a few waves.

The hardest part for me was trying to get over the traditional play-style of similar games, where the goal is to survive waves/as long as you can. In those, you just have to focus more on your positioning relative to other enemies, but being forced to question if it's a good idea to kill an enemy or not really makes it difficult (in a good way).

It reminds me a bit of the enemies in the Stardew Valley arcade game, where certain enemies turn into (temporary) blocks when you kill them. They're used in that game as mostly a strategy to block off the other enemies. This game is a really good balance of using that sort of strategy, while at the same time not blocking yourself in.

Great game! And thanks for doing a web build!

The Unicorn Shelter by senokos 2018-08-15T19:13:43Z

My story of managing the unicorn shelter:

-Take over the shelter.

-A wild unicorn appears. It needs help, so I help it.

-The unicorns aren't happy being crowded.

-Another wild unicorn appears. I don't have room, but I can't say no.

-Struggle trying to get the money to build additional paddocks and keep the unicorns fed.

-Seriously contemplate selling one to a circus... I desperately need the money... But I can't bring myself to do it.

-Unicorns really hate me for being so crowded.

-Finally manage to get them enough space.

-Unicorns still hate me, but it's about to start getting better.

-A newspaper runs two articles about how much the unicorns hate me.

-My reputation is destroyed

-Slowly manage to start turning things around.

-Uncle comes home.

This was a really cool concept, and a much more complex game than I was expecting! It's really well-balanced in a way that makes it challenging, yet doable.

My only gripe is that is that the game ended just as I felt I was actually starting to do well. I never really got close to being able to buy things like the truck or many of buildings (ended up only building a tent and 2 paddocks). I'd love to see an unlimited (or longer) version.

Overall a really fun and enticing game!

LD41 — Combine 2 Incompatible Genres

Whale Hunter Racing by khofez 2018-04-24T22:00:16Z

Great art and music! The controls are great once I realized it handled similar to a plane. One thing I would change though is increase the height you can rotate to throw the spears. The bottom limit is great since you can't really throw through the chariot, but since it's open, I feel I should be able to throw just about straight up. Great game though!

It's Not Lupus! by Deozaan 2018-04-24T23:58:27Z

Before reading your page, I thought the goal was to try to wipe out the whole virus or at least just try to keep it from hitting the edge. That was insanely difficult and I never really got close. After see that you only need to kill the source, it became a lot more manageable. Great art/concept!

Basketball Wars by Samuel Henderson 2018-04-24T05:31:50Z

The art is really unique! I love it! I agree with others on here though that it can be frustrating have the enemies spawn right in front of me or just outside my view. Awesome game though!

Flight Deck by Kovakomes 2018-04-24T14:36:12Z

@DeadlyMidnight What browser are you using? And are you able to play at all or do you get the error right away?

Flight Deck by Kovakomes 2018-04-25T07:56:30Z

@aevek Thank you for playing our game! Glad you enjoyed it! We definitely understand the lack of an in-game tutorial is one of the big drawbacks we have right now. Our game is pretty complex, and we were incredibly pressed for time before the submission time. We currently have a short guide on the itch page that I'm planning on expanding with images and more detailed info today, but adding a guide in-game is first on our to-do list. Thanks again for the playthrough and the feedback!

Flight Deck by Kovakomes 2018-04-25T20:30:28Z

@Rulrite @LemonBalmGames Thanks for the feedback! A tutorial and card re-balancing are on our to-do list for after the jam. You guys both mentioned Reigns, which we hadn't heard of. Just looked it up and it looks really cool! And they have 1200-1300 cards!?!?!?! @CaryStringfield - You ready to draw up a ton of new card art? Haha.
