LD35 — Shapeshift

Shape Collector by Jogy34 2016-04-18T02:15:00

Really neat game, played it a couple of times against the computer and will definitely play it again!

It should be a little more obvious you can't turn into the shape your opponent already is (maybe grey out the button?) but once that clicked it became a really tense interesting experience.

Really good job!

Its like an acid trip on tap, I love it!

More levels would be great as well as some randomisation for replay value. Overall, I really like it!

AMOX by OddballDave 2016-04-18T02:24:00

Reminds me of Super Monkey ball a lot!

I'm currently stuck on the zigsaw bit, but looking forward to playing more.

Keyboard control layout would have been nice but I got my head around it eventually. Great job!

Geometry Garden by Evgiz 2016-04-18T14:57:00

Very well done! It really sets the bar and you should be extremely proud. Great job!

Very atmoshperic and I really like the meta humour! Its very tense and the great soundtrack helps crank up the tension.

I feel the controls are a little slippy and I didn't have as much say as I would have liked but once I got in the zone I learnt to stop worrying too much and enjoy.

Good job!

Line Square Tower by dalbinblue 2016-04-18T02:39:00

Holy moley.

This is one of those entries thats so good its almost painful!

From the game boy era stylings to the wonderfully elegant design to the brilliant use of theme, there is so much going on in this submission!

I personally love that the old trappings of jumping are done away with, making you feel at first vulnerable and at a loss as how to solve what should be a simple problem. Then to have that replaced with the wonderful feeling of accomplishment as you grasp the mechanics. Its just awesome!

Really great job! Will definitely keep playing it! :D

Disquieting Excerpts from My Diary by ViliX64 2016-04-18T03:50:00

Oh Wow, I was not expecting to feel playing all these games.

I played it all the way through. Though the puzzles were interesting they weren't mind-blowing, though the adventure setting was ominous and intriguing it wasn't anything terribly new or exciting and didn't terribly capture the theme in my opinion.

Instead the element I liked the most was the way the narrative was weaved into the game and I felt like I was exploring a tiny fraction of a very complicated situation.

It was a very well rounded experience, it did what it set out to do and did it well! A bite-sized morsel of adventure with a satisfying ending.

A couple of things I noticed a little awry though: in the anger level the note at the end says "trust si such a fragile thing". Certain objects/characters don't logically change their responses after you fulfil certain criteria, such as locks on the anger level and the logic puzzle level still saying they're locked even though I just unlocked them and can move freely through them, as well as the depression man still wanting a poem even after I gave him one.

Those small things however did nothing to detract from this heartfelt, honest and moving piece of work. I really enjoyed it, well done!

Cutting Hedge by Headmade 2016-04-18T15:11:00

This is brilliant.

Its one of those games that I wouldn't even know where to begin coding it and you made it in two days!

I wish there was a way you could poke out those annoying bits that want to stick around.

That's about the only criticism I have, great job!

Soothsayer Simulator 2016 by iceburg7 2016-04-18T14:08:00

The coookie cutter name doesn't betray the real subtle nature of this game, its a real gem.

It does what it sets out to do very eloquently and I was hooked at the twist.

Really great job!

Trios by Zyow 2016-04-18T02:41:00

A very neat, well put together puzzle game. Simple but elegant. You have a great eye for design! Well done :D

Crouch Up by Draft 2016-04-18T14:23:00

A really well put together work.

HJKL is a slightly oddly position set of keys but add to the curve and once I got used to it, I was getting stuck in :)

Really great job on your first GoDot piece!

Neon Fighters by Sparked99 2016-04-18T03:17:00

Firstly, I really like the aesthetic, has a really retro 80's disco vibe to it!

I really like the idea of the game, but I feel the controls let it down. It's so close to a really tight, fun back and forth battle but my ability to get things done feels too clunky.

What I would like to see would be having spawners already be focused when the game starts as its really fast paced, WASD controls as well as the arrow keys and when moving up and down, have it skip to the next available spawner instead of just stopping.

I like the design very much, its gets easier to defend the less spawners you have but harder to attack. It feels like it could be a great tug of war style game if only I felt more in control.

Good job!

Minimalistic Shifter by mukult 2016-04-18T15:26:00

I really liked it!

Using the window to scout ahead and then having to decide between which type of character I want was engaging.

I understand what you mean about the game lacking finish, I do feel it could have been fleshed out more but the central idea is really strong.

I was playing in fullscreen but I still managed to get get issues where my cursor wasn't bound to the game. I do have two monitors though so that might be the issue. Its not a massive problem but does get quite fiddly.

Good job!

Helium-4 by mountainstorm 2016-04-18T00:22:00

I have no idea what I'm doing but I'm having a lot of fun doing it!

It's got great energy and I'm jealous you made such a sweet track in 48 hours!

Good Job :)

Shaze (Shape Maze) by Alphius 2016-04-18T00:57:00

I'm way to burnt out after jamming for 48 hours but this is a game I will definitely come back to when I have the mental capacity to tackle it!

Really like the narrative so far and am looking forward to finding out more. Great job!

Shaze (Shape Maze) by Alphius 2016-04-18T02:04:00

I lied, I kept playing, really addictive and well made!

Cactus Ray by neontropics 2016-04-18T14:41:00

Its a brilliant bit of work!

Other people have mentioned pretty much what I wanted to say, vis-a-vis procedural generation and a more in game tutorial.

Congratulations on getting through the chaos and coming out the other end with a great game, you should be super proud of what you accomplished and this game could very easily be increased in scope and fleshed out. Well done!

SHAPEshift by kingofjohns 2016-04-18T02:45:00

I've used Unity for my submission as well, so feel free to send me a message if you need a hand getting it together for release as you seem to be struggling.

A good start would be getting at least a windows executable zipped with the relevant data folder, uploaded somewhere like dropbox. Hope it goes well, obviously not going to vote till its playable, good luck!

SHAPEshift by kingofjohns 2016-04-18T15:34:00

If you want to deploy to windows/OSX/linux:

File > Build Settings.

Select PC, Mac & Linux Standalone option.

From the "Target Platform" drop down select which one you want. I suggest windows first as that will more than likely hit the most users.

Pick an empty folder as the build location, remember where that folder is. Name the build whatever you like.

Click build and wait.

Go to the folder and select all the contents. For the windows build it should be an exe and a folder ending in _Data.

With it all selected, right click and send it to a zip file.

Name that zip file whatever you like and upload it to drop box.

Add the dropbox link here.

Hope that helps!

Went to school.
Didn't make any friends.
Got a computer though.
So that's cool.

Geometry Shifter by gustavopereira1 2016-04-18T00:26:00

Catchy tunes!

Enjoyed the game flow but it got a bit repetitive after a while. Also the WebGL frame is a bit borked but thats not really your fault :P

I really liked the aesthetic, and would love to see more of it. Good job!

Shape Shifts by htspencer88 2016-04-18T02:19:00

Hey guys, thanks for the really great feedback :D

I've added some more info in the description that is otherwise on the instructions screen so its more up front and centre. Glad you like it!

Shape Shifts by htspencer88 2016-04-18T02:51:00

Hey Karl, I used the Otomata page to procedurally generate the music based off its little cellular automata tool(check it out, its pretty neat!) for the two tracks. Is that ok do you think? I assumed it was kosher due to bfxr being allowed/encouraged.

And I shall look into the Quit button not working on mac, thank you so much for the heads up as I can't test on that platform! Glad the game itself works :D

Shape Shifts by htspencer88 2016-04-18T15:01:00

Hyoga-3D: Yeah I know exactly what you mean! I was really struggling with the controls and I can totally understand how they would feel slippery.

My issue was that I wanted to ensure enough acceleration that a player could still make big jumps but not too much that they would overshoot most smaller jumps.

I combated this a little by having full air control and let you jump before shifts in order to get the placement better but its not a perfect solution.

I wish I had more time to fiddle with it but this I think struck the best balance given the time constraints. It also is something the player can get better accustomed to so I took that into account when designing the rest of the game.

Thanks for the feedback!
