LD32 — An Unconventional Weapon

Throw them out! by shatty 2015-04-22T23:40:00

The tight gameplay was good for being under pressure all the time. I cant say that I was able to grab the cats as quick as I wanted having to look down at the keyboard so often. very cute, and fun. :)

Mosquito attack by Filoox 2015-04-23T01:54:00

lol so good.. I hate mosquitoes so I'm biased. haha

Blanket Girl by Chippington 2015-04-22T23:34:00

Blanket Girl was a treat to play! The visuals were very cool and unique. The mesh between the vectored characters and enemies and the entire game world worked really really well. The main attacking and platforming mechanics looked and felt good (the floating with the blanket is genius). As for the theme of the Jam, using a blanket as a weapon is indeed an unconventional weapon. The only problem I had with it was the fact that Blanket Girl didn't have a shadow. It made the platforming sections really hard to judge the distances I needed to jump. Otherwise excellent job and I want to see more of Blanket Girl!

The Ties That Bind by mantisda 2015-04-23T00:18:00

Loved that you use another person as a weapon. really innovative. :)

Gravity Gunner by Perjoka 2015-04-23T00:10:00

cool game. i enjoyed it. love the blur as you move around.

Neon Mirror by qwitwa 2015-04-23T23:21:00

The name Neon Mirror was what drew me in to begin with. I like the idea of using reflected enemy projectiles to kill them. Controls we easy enough to get down, I have to admit though it gets hard when there are lasers bouncing around everywhere. Music is some MIDI goodness. Can't go wrong there. Visuals were... Kind of lack luster? I mean they weren't bad but they didn't really pop out or were memorable for that matter. Some things to touch up on though would definitely be the collision on the outer walls. I ended up just clipping right through them and hanging out in the corner with my mirror facing the inside of the play area. Any laser that came my way would have just automatically just been deflected. I think I would have gotten a really high score by just staying there but I ended up getting an error code which crashed the game after round 5:

Error

Enemy.lua:23: attempt to index local 'pos' (a nil value)

Traceback

Enemy.lua:23: in function 'new'
EnemyTypes.lua:11: in function 'pinkwhirl'
GameManager.lua:111: in function 'update'
Levels/level1.lua:9: in function 'update'
main.lua:49: in function 'update'
[C]: in function 'xpcall'

Other than that it was pretty fun.

Haters Gonna Love by Floko 2015-04-22T23:26:00

love the gameplay. no weapon though.. super fun to pass the time. :)

Dagobert by Jellyhard 2015-04-23T23:58:00

Dagobert was... interesting. The controls I just couldn't get used to. I kept wanting to hit Space to jump causing me to waste a seed. That's entirely user problem though, I just need to get good. It could have been the muscle memory of using WASD to move then Space to jump from playing too many FPS? Arrow keys plus Space maybe would have worked better. The visual were great! Pixel are is so charming. Character design was funny. Love the leaf loincloth. Character movement was maybe a bit too jarring? Some minor acceleration time could have been really nice. Music was fitting. What this game really needed to compliment the "Hold to Shoot Farther" main mechanic was an indicator as to how long you've held vs. max hold time. Otherwise well done.

An Unconventional Error by Joe Lawrence 2015-04-23T23:46:00

Love the idea. First time around I had no idea what to do. Sat there watching the timer. Only after a while I realized I could click on it and type stuff in. I think only programmers and people who use linux will get it though. Very niche audience. Either way, funny and i enjoyed it. Well done!

Souls of the Fallen by Bsevers18 2015-04-22T23:21:00

good game, had fun, but as unconventional weapons go.. could seem like the weapon isn't unconventional to killing ghosts. otherwise its an awesome game and keep going with it!! :D

UN Convention by RockhopperGames 2015-04-22T23:33:00

Wasn't sure the point of the game. very political, which isn't my thing so I didn't find it too exciting. interesting concept though, but no weapon.

Ghost Prosecutor: Closing Statement by awestsecurity 2015-04-23T23:09:00

Ghost Prosecutor is pretty. I love the pixel artstyle you used. However the main mechanic was kind of... Odd. Pulling off successful combos didn't really work for me other that just continuously using C. I got a combo of about 600 just doing that. The music was subtle and strangely fitting. I like it but I think fine tuning the combo system is pretty necessary.

AntsAreBad by MrSchlag 2015-04-23T19:56:00

Funny game! The controls for the RC car were tight and quick, which is good for quickly squishing ants! I ran into a few a few glitches especially when colliding with any of the walls of play area. I'd clip into them and have trouble getting out or my car would just vanish altogether! Either way fun in a "I need to kill 3 minutes in a silly fashion" kind of way. Love the idea of using an RC Car as a weapon too. Truly unconventional. Well done.

Hello Darkness: My Old Friend by HapaxStudios 2015-04-21T03:28:00

We will be uploading a new patch for Hello Darkness very soon!

Version 0.3

-What's in this patch-
:Fixes:
- Added icons for file selection screen.
- Added game over screen.
- Text box removed from the bottom of the screen.
- The map screen toggles properly now (Escape Key to access).
- Added music to game. Main menu theme (Horizon) and pre-generator room track (Emergency Power). *It's still quite loud however, so be warned.*
:Balancing:
- Modified Capt. Ando's movement and input controls to make him actually controllable. *Will tweak again in future patches. We needed a basis to start from that wasn't our test movement.*
- Wraith now has a wider detection radius. 5 -> 12
- Crab has reduced detection radius. 5 -> 3
- Robot Assistant's ambient light has been increased and radius is larger.

Will update again when the new patch goes live!

Hey everyone!

Thanks for voting and commenting.

We realized that the download links of the latest patch was working but the Web version didn't update properly. We just fixed it.

The online version will now be the proper version 0.3.

We are also planning another patch later tonight. We will post a patch breakdown when we solidify what will be in Hello Darkness v0.4!

Thanks again for all of your input.

ScarKrow by Carduus 2015-04-22T23:15:00

nice visuals. fun gameplay. good theme. don't know if it is an unconventional weapon for a bird to use its own body as a weapon, but i like it overall. nice fighting mechanic.

Legends of Kersalmon by tummyache 2015-04-23T23:01:00

Legends of Kersalmon was a surprisingly really good platformer! I was thoroughly impressed by how tight the character's movement was. Made making jumps and moving around really enjoyable. Visuals were nice as who doesn't love pixel art? The upgrade system worked well but I mostly found myself using the Koi exclusively unless there was a puzzle or enemy that required something else. The music was... Repetitive. Not bad. But very repetitive. I understand the time limit on the competition but for how long you were in each area and had to listen to the same track on repeat for as long as we need to, it gets old. The only real criticism I have is the controls. F and R? Very strange choice. I think Z for jump, X for attack/special and C for change inventory could have worked better? Maybe WASD for movement, Space for jump, F for attack and E to change? I'm not sure, either way F and R with Space was kind of uncomfortable. Now I need to fit an obligatory fish pun in the review... This game was a ton of fun and I deFINitely think it has the oppor-tuna-ty to become something reelly cool! I'll see myself out now.
