Very interesting, would have loved some more variation. My personal brain issues of the ordering of the keys for the music made it feel really backwards to me. bottom to top maps right to left.
Ok so I don't think the mechanics or tech were particularly amazing... but that didnt matter at all because it was scary and fun. reminded me DOOM back in the day, scary as hell with limited vision and great effects. The rough controls made me feel more panicked when being attacked and trying to figure things out. Really well done! You dont need high tech to give the player an awesome experience!
Its really cool and creative! I have a few critiques for you.
1. The movement felt a little weird since you always have to hold two movement keys to move aligned to the roads. When you rotate the camera while running it really spins you around and you get kinda messed up. Its also a bit unnatural to have all the movement be keyboard based but not have a way to interact with tiles via keyboard. Would have loved to have a button to place the letter using keyboard, as well as a mouse move mode would have felt really good.
2. Needs more vowels. Felt like 90% of the word needed vowels, and 10% of the letter drops were vowels. In general would have been cool to have bigger words and more stuff to do. Also it seems like there was supposed to be a way to get rid of letters you didnt want but while in the game I could not figure it out at all.
3. Not being able to leave the road was odd but I could get the conceit. Random cars you cant get around for arbitrary blockage was a little annoying. Would have been nice to just have buildings/no road where you dont want the player to go, or meaningful word blockades.
Overall really awesome job!
Really interesting idea and neat use of games for education! Bit tedious, as a programmer I was like the last thing I want to do right now is write more code after 72 hours of writing code. Theme wise not sure DOS ASM counts a game genre, but the idea is so cool I think it makes up for it.
Didnt make it past the initial screen sadly. Said to press start.. clicked, mashed keyboard never found a way to start or do anything. Alt-F4 was the only thing that seemed to work.
Dont have a controller.....why not make a version that works for everyone using numbers of qwerty or something.
Thanks all! We really appreciate the feedback and positive reviews!
@Cassio-eduardo Thanks for the feed back on the portal build time. We actually got this a few places and think the first time you build it, it felt good but not waiting for it every time, so likely in future versions this will become more tuned to the importance of the event.
Getting out of memory error when trying to play :(
@Mister_Kweh It was the browser version.
Fun game and great entry for a first time LD Composition. Not entirely sure it hit the theme on the head but that is not a requirement either. Played for a bit and my general lack of coordination was disasterous. I kind of wish it asked your gender and your dominant hand so that your personal gender would feel the best to control and you would have to struggle with the other gender. Also as a transgender gamedev I found the theme particularly amusing.
