LD42 — Running out of space

Rising Tide by smilewood 2018-08-13T00:24:18Z

@squirmonkey Actually you have to build two houses to build factory, and each house will cost something every second, so if you take too much time you won't have enough money to build the factory, and the game is basically over.

It would be much easier to play if cash didn't drop so fast, it became more a speed game than a strategy game, and I don't think it was the intended experience.

But t was quite a good idea !

It is pretty fun, the only thing I would say is that it may have been easier to see where we are going if the camera was rotating with the character.

The only thing I would have to say is that the jump is really hard to get at the beginning. It would feel better if we could jump higher.

On the Linux 64 build I also had that error.

First it said this :

``` ERROR: load_image: Error opening file: res://icon.png At: core/io/image_loader.cpp:55. ERROR: get_as_text: Condition ' !f ' is true. returned: String() At: core/bind/core_bind.cpp:1623. ```
and then each frame : ``` SCRIPT ERROR: shuffle: Error calling built-in function 'len': Object can't provide a length. At: res://Scenes/Game.gdc:42.` ```
I have to admit that I got stuch on the "simultaneity" level which seemed much harder than the previous ones.
Maybe the controls would feel better if we had separate item for the conveyor going up, down, left, right, etc. instead of having to place the mouse in the right place (or instead being able to drag to draw a line, but it might be much harder to implement on your side). An other improvement could be to be able to keep an item selected without having to keep the mouse down (select the item once in the menu, and then click to place). It would be much more fluid !
And the idea that we have to use all the space makes the puzzle more difficult but I think it should only be left as an option to earn more points on a level or something. In some cases (cf simultaneity) we **have to** use more space to get the level done, so we don't need this constraint to be mandatory.
Also, I quite liked the music, but it felt more like an RPG soundtrack. For an industrial theme, it may be better to use synthesizers or metallic sounds, eventually some strings, but the winds just don't match with the theme.
Dusk Spirits by Tinamil 2018-08-13T00:37:27Z
I think the web build is not up to date (it feels quite empty and doesn't look like on the screenshots)
Dusk Spirits by Tinamil 2018-08-13T01:12:31Z
@tinamil the menu is colliding with itself and the guy in the second room almost doesn't move (it rotates sometimes but on the screenshot above here it seems like it should do more). Furthemore I didn't see any way to fight the boss other than to run into the sphere hitbox and take damage, and no ennemy tries to attack, so it felt like a very early stage, or maybe I just missed it :confused:
I belive the concept wasn't so great because we almost just have to click fast enought to survive so the gameplay itself isn't very interesting but except that, the art, sound and controls are quite simple and very effective.
@dalbinblue the things you didn't understood is part of the mourning system I tried (failed ?) to implement :wink:
The idea is that each penguin has one chick to take care of (except your penguin who has two). When it dies, the penguin will first start to cry over it's corpse, and that is when they make a sound. At first I thought it was not clear enough what penguin was crying so I added a blue-blinking effect at the last minute because I didn't have time to make an animation. I see now that : 1. it wasn't necessary to add this blinking effect because it is not chocking to hear penguin noises in a game with that much penguins even if we don't know which one is crying 2. nobody got what it was supposed to highlight :cry:
Anyway, when a penguin cries, those who aren't doing anything usefull come to confort him, and he gradually turns black while mourning and accepting his loss, which is why you saw that.
Obviously, the lack of animations, the quite uncomplete gameplay (I intended to have an option to allow the player to mourn on a dead chick, which could have helped to understand the behaviour of the AI) and AI which is not good enough don't help to understand this mechanics, and the link between a chick and his father is not obvious when we look at how they behave so all of this don't make so much sense.
Seeing the comments, I think I really should have added some animations, but I lacked both the time and the skills. Or maybe if I spent more time on the AI... :thinking:
Overall, I was not so happy with my performance but I am pleased to see that so many peoples got most of the feeling with so few arts, it is quite encouraging, thank you very much :hearts:
(By the way @tinamil penguins have their speed divided by two when they are in water, but the hit-boxes are not so good, and speed is already divided by two when a penguin holds a chick. Furthemore it is common knowlage that penguins are good swimmers :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: That being said, frost is supposed to grow faster in water but it doesn't seem to be working well, and it doesn't make sense that a penguin could still have a chick on his feet while swimming + I should have made an animation for the swim but I didn't have time :cry:)
Boop's Space Adventure by winnie33 2018-08-13T06:41:57Z
I think that one thing that could be improved is the way by witch you introduce the mechanics in the game : the little panels are a good idea but they don't really come in the right place. The first one who tells the player that he can place a copy of himself is in a pit with the laser thing going, so we don't really see the panel, and the mechanic it explains don't really help us in that first situation. It might have been best to have the first panel somewhere else so it won't be hidden by an obstacle, and maybe if the first thing we encounter is this laser/wave enemy, the first panel should talk about that :wink:
Spaceless by yilian 2018-08-12T00:31:26Z
It could be usefull to have mabe a way to move the falling pieces, or a bonus bomb to avoid getting stuck in some case where it is just not possible to continue because we were not lucky enough. Other than that it is quite fun to play.
Oh no! This is monsters! by Alexey Akulovich 2018-08-13T00:08:12Z
The game is quite good but it takes a lot of CPU to run on the navigator !
Oh no! This is monsters! by Alexey Akulovich 2018-08-13T08:29:51Z
@alexey-akulovich I use Firefox, and I don't have a very good CPU so it was quickly loaded, which is a shame because the game is cool otherwise !
A Way Out by sdrrv 2018-08-12T22:56:45Z
I liked it, but it is quite easy to deal with the piston : when you fire three bullets form the top of the screen, the piston is almost back to it's original position.
It could be fun also to be able to deviate the ennemies by fiering at them (and probably not too hard by just taking the same mechanic as the one for the bullets, twicking some variables).
And maybe some kind of tutorial could be usefull, even thought everything is exlpained in the loading screen. But I took some time to understand what I had to do, and even after reading the descriptions I didn't understood at first that all the piston was not the target but only the small red lines.
