I enjoyed it, but I feel like their could be some polish put on the combat to get it just right. If you haven't already I'd recommend Game Makers Toolkit, it's a video series and in it they talk about "juice" which is the stuff that makes gameplay "feel good".

I think the web build is not up to date (it feels quite empty and doesn't look like on the screenshots)

tinamil 2018-08-13 00:48

@catgol1 It's working fine for me with Chrome, if it's still not working for you feel free to send me a screenshot or something and I'll see if I can figure out what happened.

Interesting game, the movement could have felt better and the game felt like a prototype to me. For learning how to make a dark souls like combat system I'm sure you learned a lot from this! good job!

bigjigglyproductions 2018-08-13 00:55

I completed the game in under a minute apparently? Not sure how it fits with the theme.

The camera is strange, the combat feels okay.

With some polishing this game could become something amazing!

@bigjigglyproductions The idea is that if you don't kill the boss too fast (within 60 seconds), the arena will shrink on you until it's just larger than the boss itself.

bigjigglyproductions 2018-08-13 01:03

Ahh, I just held W+D and realised you didn't normalize it so I got a speed boost and was able to defeat the boss without dying.

catgol1 2018-08-13 01:12

@tinamil the menu is colliding with itself and the guy in the second room almost doesn't move (it rotates sometimes but on the screenshot above here it seems like it should do more). Furthemore I didn't see any way to fight the boss other than to run into the sphere hitbox and take damage, and no ennemy tries to attack, so it felt like a very early stage, or maybe I just missed it

@catgol1 Sorry. That's pretty much correct, it's still at least half a prototype because it was a learning experience for me. The menu bug is due to the smaller size of the window (it just puts the menu in the middle and the help text in the bottom 25% of the screen and doesn't resize it). The second room guy will rotate to face you and reach his arms out towards you to do damage, but doesn't move since he's meant to just be a step up in difficulty from the training dummy.

The boss will just roll at you and occasionally send smaller faster weaker versions of himself at you. About the only way to fight him right now is to do hit and run, or just realize that you are actually invincible and tank his damage until he dies.

Nice !

Great music, and nice animations, I really laughed at the end! Fighting is just bashing at the moment, but the principle ideas are there. For me the boss didn't do anything but homing in on me, I wasn't able to hit+run. Being invincible actually helped

Cool animations enjoyed the cutscene in the end as well :D

Doesn't work on Microsoft Edge but I played on Firefox and won. A very funky Dark Souls

dom-harris 2018-08-13 11:47

Played on chrome, the audio and visuals are really nice. I love the way it looks. Unfortunately I'm awful at this sort of game, and when I got to the boss I got smashed into a wall, pinned there, and then my browser froze  I'm on Chrome on a mac.

Other than that, I feel like the controls could use a _lot_ of work - it feels really slow to me. I didn't beat the boss because of the crash, didn't want to try again because I lost about 5 minutes of my lunch break to it, didn't want to waste time that could be used playing other games! I'll give it another go with the windows build when I get home.

Pretty cool.

Esc was probably not a good key to close the dialogue with, since it's used in firefox to take back control over the cursor and disable fullscreen. I had to maximize the screen, then press esc and it worked.

This game reminds me of the old classic Die by the sword in the way you swing your weapon. Less like an action game and more like a fighting simulator. That's a plus in my book.

The music is really quite good too.

mathiouza 2018-08-13 14:24

Cool game, I finished it in 118 seconds ^^ One of the most important thing is that I have trouble to see what there was in front of my character. Plus, the special attack is more a dash than an attack x) Also I do not see the link with the theme... But however, there is a nice music, so... you're forgiven ^^

Overall cool entry :) Keep coding :)
