lmao the cover... respect for plain js!
Old tech indeed, both archimede's heat ray and vanilla javascript :D
The cover catch my eyes lol, The Battle of the Century
Love that cover art, and the art in general. The boats looked good. The gameplay concept wasn't too bad, but the difficulty needs to ramp up over time. Either the enemies need to get faster, or they need to start spawning more frequently to make the game more challenging. I felt like I could just keep going forever and the boats never got past half screen. Score tracking would also help give a better sense of progression. While I liked the music, the loop itself was too short and got very repetitive very quickly. You have an interesting take on the theme, and a good foundation that just needs some more iteration to make it really engaging.
Neat idea! Could use some sound effects and visual feedback to feel a bit more satisfying. A little sizzle, smoke and flames. Like someone mentioned, difficulty ramping as well.
I really liked the jojo reference. I also liked how the boats slowed down smoothly as they approached, which stopped it from feeling like a reskin of space invaders :)
I liked the idea behind it a lot. As others said, a greater audio variety, a difficulty ramp and something to earn would help, but I liked the simplicity of the art. In this times, seeing clearly handmade art is heartwarming.
I think it's a good base for a more complex jam game. Like others said : difficulty ramp, some points to win. But good job !
Nice job! I think a few simple things to add to spice this up would be some kind of score keeping (eg "you survived for 1 minute), feedback when you are successfully targeting the ship (like a noise and vfx), and then some variation like fast ones and slow ones.
Thanks everyone for playing! This was a little experiment made by me in a few hours, so with the number of corners cut, its practically a circle 😅.
@the3rdhunter @braulio-jg @helagos Agreed about the difficulty and scoring. It's not really challenging at the start and the difficulty never ramps up. And with no score there isn’t much sense of achievement either.
@silkworm-sweatshop @acartlidge More feedback while heating ships would definitely help make targeting clearer, especially on touch devices.
I'd say you have the right aesthetic. It convincingly looks like a flash game. With the font and visuals.
The game over screen was even better than I expected :) Old school, just as it should be given the theme.
As others have mentioned it definitely gives old flash game vibes, and it would have been nice to have some feedback when a ship is being hit and a score or timer of some kind to provide tangible progress.
The music did get a bit repetitive and I would have liked a few SFX to spice it up a bit.
Overall, though for only a few hours not bad!
I found it counterintuitive that the ships slowed down the closer they came, since things far away should move relatively slower.
I think making a game entirely in javascript is impressive, so I'm awarding you the **Nothin' but JS** award.
The stand user could be *any one* of these programming languages.
That being said, I think the game is a bit lacking. It wouldn't have been that difficult to add a system of score, or a slight increase in difficulty over time by reducing the rate between enemy spawns.
I recorded myself playing to provide extra feedback.
