Hey commenting in advance here because I got notified that you published a game, just to say that I can't wait for the YouTube video. I hope you make them because it's almost part of the LD event to wait for the PixelProphecy video/documentary! Wish you the best!

tolmera 2025-04-06 20:36

Inspired by Populus? That game has inspired so many things for me, awesome to see someone else mention it :)

Cool tool - cool idea, would make interesting art installations with something like this

badgerdash 2025-04-07 07:37

What a cool idea! Like it!

sicosiber 2025-04-07 17:15

Very cool concept! I would be interested in being to do extra little things with the depth, like put tiny little people on it and interact with it somehow!

andrewkennedy 2025-04-07 18:51

During brainstorming I though "Color depth? Nah you can't make a game based on that." Well, here I am proven wrong. Fun to play with, and a clever way to leverage the tile map project from your streams.

FYI, I hit an error when double-clicking the title bar to maximize. I'm not familiar with Game Maker, but it's possible the rendering target isn't being re-allocated on certain types of window events. If you're interested in digging in, here's the error I got: ``` ___________________________________________ ############################################################################################ ERROR in action number 1 of Draw Event for object CTRL_gridboard: Trying to set a surface target that does not exist. at gml_Script_draw_grids_to_surface@gml_Object_CTRL_gridboard_Create_0 ############################################################################################ gml_Script_draw_grids_to_surface@gml_Object_CTRL_gridboard_Create_0 (line -1) gml_Object_CTRL_gridboard_Draw_0

```
Here's my creation!
@unidaystudio Thank you so much! I have too many videos in the pipeline; but I'm working on getting another traditional post mortem video finished! Thanks for watching! ๐Ÿฅฐ
@tolmera Haha yes, I wanted to play with "bulldozing terrain" (and still have ideas for it) but in the time I had, all I managed to make was this little tool. Thanks for giving it a try! ๐Ÿ˜Š
@badgerdash Youโ€™re too kind! Thank you! ๐Ÿฅฐ
@sicosiber Thatโ€™s a cool idea! Maybe have some sort of auto-battler-rogue-like play out in your creations... I have to give that some thought!
@andrewkennedy Indeed, thatโ€™s the stub I started from ๐Ÿ˜… Thank you for playing around with it and --wow!-- you even made art with it!! ๐Ÿ˜ฒThanks for sharing! And also thanks for reporting the bug. Indeed, I created a render target once and, while occasionally checking whether it still existed, I would never re-create it if not! Itโ€™s fixed now in post-jam version 1.0.1 ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘
bangkerpow 2025-04-08 21:49
Very cool idea. I had a hard time finding where to click when I colored too deeply (not sure how to describe this).
Very interesting idea :D I really had some fun drawing with it.
dock-frankenstein 2025-04-11 17:16
Quite a fun tool, but it would be cool if you could change the canvas size
Also, I see the audio category is enabled, but I couldn't hear any sound
oadt 2025-04-13 18:01
Unexpected, but cool entry! Had fun building some small rooms and placing boxes in them :smile:
philstrahl 2025-04-14 00:02
@bangkerpow Thank you so much for playing and the video, thatโ€™s a cute bunny! And I think I know what you mean. The hover area for a tile gets lowered and raised with the tile so a low tile behind a very high tile is harder to select. I'll keep on tweaking this, thanks for reporting! โ˜บ๏ธ๐Ÿ‘
@neowhoru Thank you, glad you had a fun time with it ๐Ÿ˜Š
@dock-frankenstein Changing the canvas size (and starting depth) is definitely something I should implement. And thanks for noticing that the sound rating doesnโ€™t make sense, Iโ€™ve opted out of it now. ๐Ÿ˜…
@oadt Thank you for trying! Interesting of you to say that you "built rooms" with it since I never thought of it as some sort of "architectural" tool, but it totally makes sense! Maybe I could repurpose it as a level editor ๐Ÿค”
commanderstitch 2025-04-19 01:43
It feels like a level editor. i wanted to click and drag the brush quite a bit. Good job!
frank-gevaerts 2025-04-21 23:05
Fun idea! I think I agree with @commanderstitch that being able to drag would be nice.
Overall I think this could grow to become a very fun toy, this semi-isometric way to show colours is very interesting!
superpokeunicorn 2025-04-24 22:02
Wasn't able to extract the post jam version, windows said it was an invalid zip file, but the compo version worked fine.
Cute concept! I appreciate the amount of features you packed in, like different brushes/palettes as well as file saving/loading. Once I realized you could load any PNG, I had fun seeing what would happen when I loaded random images. Loading some of my own pixel art actually had some good results! Part of me wishes I could use colors from different palettes in the same image (maybe even in the same stack?) but I also found it fun to work within the limitations provided. Sorta hard to rate it since it's very different from other entries, but I had a good time with it for what it is. Nice work!
Here's my first creation:
Here's a sprite I made a while ago that wound up looking good when loaded into the editor:
niterich 2025-04-25 16:17
I also couldn't open the post-jam version - my computer said the zip file was empty. Perhaps there was a problem exporting?
Either way, fun little toy! It can be a bit difficult to lower a piece when there's a tall on in front of it, and it's a bit of a bummer you have to click each and every time instead of using a drag feature, but I had fun playing with it!
Anyway, here's a Pikachu.
philstrahl 2025-04-30 11:22
@commanderstitch I feared that people might wanted to click and drag once my game had turned into this pixel art tool but by then it was too late to mess with it. ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ˜…
@frank-gevaerts Thank you for your kind words! Maybe I keep it around as a tool for another `PetProjects.createNew()` ๐Ÿ˜…
@superpokeunicorn Oh dear, thanks for the heads-up regarding the borked zip file of the post-jam version! ๐Ÿ˜ฌ And I'm glad you had fun with it despite the somewhat clunky user experience. And mixing palettes/colors sounds possible. And thank you for posting your art you made with it! ๐Ÿฅฐ
@niterich Thank you so much for playing around with it and confirming that the post-jam zip is broken, sadly. I feel your pain when it comes to work on a low stack that's behind a tall one, maybe I should add a feature to "flatten" the canvas display for such cases. And click-and-drag features is duly noted ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ‘ And so cool how that Pikachu turned out! ๐Ÿ˜โšก
