Very good idea and the game is really appealing. The main difficulty for me was to play with English names for countries and cities.

grut607 2024-10-07 16:07

Well, I have never seen such a game on ldjam, it is a very good game, I wish you luck, I hope you will continue to develop it

It's a solid game. It took me a bit to understand what those couples of letters meant, though. At first I thought it would be the initial part of the country or city. Next I thought about some letters in the middle. Then again I thought about the code of the airports. As of now I am still unsure, but I did make it to the leaderboard nonetheless

It would help to have some explanation and eventually to be able to give up and reveal the solution and get a new task assigned. That way you won't even need that much of an explanation as it would be understandable just by playing some matches till the game "clicks".

Art and sound wise it's solid.

antti-haavikko 2024-10-08 04:13

@tanis Yeah I think giving up on a task would have been a good addition. With some time/money or some other penalty so it couldn't be abused. Getting a hard combination with only a single match and the country/city being not too familiar to you is indeed a tricky obstacle. The dude does tell in the beginning that both the letters just need to be somewhere in the country name. But I guess that is easy enough to miss as it can be just dismissed. Might have been a good idea to repeat the intro if noticing some struggling.

It's fun! At first I thought the blue parts are land somehow XD. I love when I bought a free-refill in the middle of the map and don't have to worry about oil money.

https://youtu.be/vMj1XwPVuB8 Really nicely made UI and the character's bouncy animations are super fun!! My lack of geography knowledge definitely was the hardest part of this game. Wish the map was labeled or at least had more lines between countries to help me get my bearings better! Felt confusing when I'd land in "Unknown lands" and not have a way to reveal what country I was in or where the borders were.

amarokczukay 2024-10-09 02:54

it's like revising for school but in super fun! the game feels super complete, all the upgrades at embassy, the map slowly revealing itself, the UI is flawless, i'm always impressed at how you manage to make such polished games in 48h, great job!!

so the lore is an erasmus student getting IST during their college years, that's it?

antti-haavikko 2024-10-09 04:59

@amarokczukay Sounds about right! 😜 You mean STI?

amarokczukay 2024-10-09 10:07

@antti-haavikko oops totally yes IST is indeed in french haha

antti-haavikko 2024-10-09 10:13

@amarokczukay or yoda 😂

I don't have enought words to define how much fun this game is! I think that the idea is very original, the art is great and the gameplay, oh god is so much fun! Is like if Geoguessr were transformed a cozy funny game! A lot of congrats!!!!!!

Great job with UI, the game feels really polished except for one error with Zurich which really got me thinking before I realized it's just a bug.

The gameplay loop is fun, it would be cool if there were more different map-related puzzles, but for a game jam it's perfect.

I would prefer if there were more lose conditions other than fuel running out. But to be honest I can't think of any that won't drastically increase the scope of the game... Now the game ends abruptly when day 8 begins but it feels anticlimatic, I was just getting started exploring the map! 😁

antti-haavikko 2024-10-09 17:16

@woona Well yeah, time is indeed the second end (not fail though) condition. And of course if you run out of money you're bound to run out of fuel too. Of course (real life) time would be another route that it could be taken but I don't really like that and kept it so that players can take their time thinking through (also cheating and looking at google maps or something ) the options. And even if "cheating", it's still not brainless simple either so I'm pondering whether I should add an "easy mode" where the labels actually are visible.

But you are correct, fuel becomes a non-issue after you get the hang of the mechanics really and then you're just optimizing fuel/money usage for the allotted time. Of course there could be stuff like allowing buying an extension after the week is up if you have enough money or something. But I feel like extending it would be too much (at current state at least) as it already starts to get repetitive.

I am genuinely impressed, how you pulled off such a game in just two days! Really hard for common folks, who are not geography buffs, tho

budster16 2024-10-09 22:10

Cool game for sure, definitely a struggle to get the geography perfect (self admitted Canadian here) but overall it's nice and it looks absolutely stunning! it might be nicer to have an easy mode where every city is shown on the map once you visit it regardless of bribery but other than that, I think the game feels nice and it's a great entry!

harmadillo 2024-10-11 19:58

Impressive game. The character dancing when hunting etc was a highlight. As others have mentioned, some kind of difficulty levels with borders/city locations shown would be good. I managed to complete 3 hunts and had to look on google for 2 of those.

vittima 2024-10-12 08:53

The idea is original, and the drawings are cute. I like it

euler-moises 2024-10-12 14:22

I didn't find anything... I didn't find anything... I didn't find anything...

and that's it.

chuckiee 2024-10-16 06:03

Such a nice idea. Too bad I could only hunt 2 animals (on my third run , first two were failures)because of my poor geography knowledge and Eng. names for countries  I'll get back to geoguessr then come back to this. Looks great, catchy music and it's a complete game. Very well done!

bradur 2024-10-22 12:30

I am so bad at geography. But playing a game like this might make me better at it. It's all very well executed and I love the little jumping around animation the hunter does. I wonder why sometimes there is no country detected even though it's land I'm landing on? Took me a while to realize the "hint" letters don't have to be in order.

antti-haavikko 2024-10-22 16:40

@bradur So it does always detect the country you land in but will only inform you about what country it is if you're close to the capital. So for the country tasks, you can still accomplish them even if you don't see the country name pop up.

bradur 2024-10-22 17:11

Ah I see that makes sense!

m2tias 2024-10-23 21:36

This game makes me feel so stupid but also like I'm learning! I played some matches and didn't do that well. In the last one I got three letters for a city name and I was so sure there isn't one like that. It was the closest capital to mine... Everything is so juicy and smooth in the typical Antti fashion. It's a fun idea and a joy to play! Only criticism I have is that sometimes the UI elements are a bit annoying popping up when I don't want them or text (like city names) are covered up by other things.
