What's the difference between this game and Suika Game?

bohne 2024-10-06 10:02

not bad

kateryna 2024-10-06 12:36

interesting concept, and I like the cute art. Unlike the original 2048, there is not a lot of tactics involved. In the beginning I was trying to place the creatures with thought, but then I realized I can spawn creatures in one spot continuously and get almost the same result. My score is 32810

kernon 2024-10-06 16:38

Cute little creatures! I ran into an issue after dropping a creature, a new creature spawns at the top but isn't updated to the mouse's x position unless you move the mouse again. Quick successive drops will always drop the creature in the middle no matter where the mouse cursor is.

arkatme 2024-10-06 18:15

Is that AI art? It sure looks like AI art...

fernando-tonon-de-rossi 2024-10-06 21:42

@Anonimous, I didn't know Suika Game, but the difference I could spot is that Suika Game is better done... haha there are plenty of games like this, mods of 2048. This one I made from scratch, following the same theme.

@bohne thanks!

@kateryna thanks for playing, yes, it lacks a bit of balancing and including more features, I hope to be able to work more on this game after the jam.

@kernon Thanks for the feedback, in desktop it was ok, but testing on mobile it had this issue, just fixed it, hope it is ok now.

@arkatme yes, all assets were AI created (cover, sprites, music, and sfx)

william-corrin 2024-10-07 00:47

@fernando-tonon-de-rossi I think you should opt out of the categories that you used AI to generate(graphics, audio, etc.)

Honestly, I would just throw this into the jam section as opposed to having it be a compo entry. Seems kind of like, the opposite of what the compo is supposed to be about (making everything from scratch).

The game plays fine but its also kind of just unoriginal.

fernando-tonon-de-rossi 2024-10-07 02:28

@william-corrin I believe it might be fair to opt-out, but I'll leave it to folks to rate according their beliefs. For me AI is a tool, and by the AI tools rules, the one who prompts owns the rights of what is generated. But for the sake of LD, IDK how to behave regarding the use of AI until we get clearer rules regarding this.

To me it is like some participants who use game engines, while other do the entire engine themselves, is it fair or not? It is a broader discussion...

What I know is that I had fun making this game, and my kids also had a lot of fun playing it, so mission accomplished 😅 Hope other folks can also play this and have fun. I'll try to improve it further in the future. As my kids liked the game, other kids may also enjoy it!

william-corrin 2024-10-07 07:03

I definitely disagree; the spirit of Ludum Dare Compo is that all _assets_ (including code, yes) have been made starting from the 48 hour period that the competition begins.

> For me AI is a tool, and by the AI tools rules, the one who prompts owns the rights of what is generated.

Of course the AI tool rules say this, they want you to use the tools. The reality is, AI spits out amalgomations of existing content, and according to actual jurisdiction, you may _not_ be able to use what you generate legally, and you _definitely_ do not outright "own" the things that it spits out. If AI spits out an image of Mario, you don't suddenly own Mario. Thats just not how it works.

> To me it is like some participants who use game engines, while other do the entire engine themselves, is it fair or not? It is a broader discussion…

Of course using engines is fair. I would agree that having a different category for fully-from-scratch games could be a good idea to differentiate the level of achievement. But comparing using a game engine to using AI generated content is _not_ a good comparison to make. A game engine doesn't suddenly make you an amazing pixel artist, a refined sound composer, or a voice actor. It just gives you the ability to have a game loop, physics, collisions, rendering, etc. These two are not even remotely comparable.

You're right that there should be clear rules for this. But the last thing I personally want to see in the Compo where the spirit is literally "48 hours all assets from scratch" is a game completely made up of AI generated content. Seems like it goes against the competition entirely.

Also, sorry to hijack your game for this issue specifically; but I do think its important to talk about as it becomes used more and more.

thesand 2024-10-07 08:25

Good game, me and my partner got around 2060 points! As others said, dont know what to feel about the AI generated content as its not self made. But as you said, we dont have any clear rules for it yet. So id say its alright atleast this ludum dare :)

custodi 2024-10-07 10:21

Popular concept of Suika Game, nice work! Awesome game, cool design but AI generated.

sviborg 2024-10-07 11:33

I enjoyed this game. The cute creatures and overall aesthetic were enjoyable. However, the use of AI-generated assets raises some interesting questions about the spirit of the Ludum Dare Compo.

While I understand that AI can be a powerful tool, it is important to consider whether using AI-generated content is consistent with the goal of the contest to create assets from scratch within 48 hours. As noted in the discussion, there are legal and ethical implications to using AI-generated materials.

Perhaps a future Ludum Dare could introduce a separate category for games using AI-generated assets, allowing participants to showcase their creativity while also providing a clear distinction for those who prefer a more traditional approach.

Regardless of the AI debate, the game itself is fun and engaging. I hope to see more of your work in the future, and look forward to seeing how the AI landscape in the gaming industry evolves.

And yes, I generated this comment in ChatGPT:joy::joy::joy::joy::joy::joy::joy::joy:

The game was an interesting experience for all the things it made me think about the LD format !

It's just my second Ludum Dare and it already feels like a "man vs self" kind of competition. The compo format is interesting as it puts you in front of everything you are neglecting as a game dev, and more interesting, what you really want to do through seeing that you're not happy with what you produced in 48 hours.

As for now, AI usage in assets can still be obvious, especially if you are familiar with it, but in the future we won't see a difference and the quality of what we can do in such a limited amount of time will spike.

From there, two things can happen: - Competition will shift from all the AI generated categories to innovative gameplay, until AI catches on, then... - People won't care for ratings anymore and like most photography contests where you are juste looking for a theme/constraint, you'll just go back to your "man vs self" thing and just share the results with others. In the end, I think game jams can "survive" AI but it will be difficult to keep ratings of any kind or things like the compo given its "everything under 48h" pitch won't make sense anymore.

Was fun to play, I always wanted to see the next creature. Unfortunately there's not much to do/think about in terms of gameplay, since the considerate decision-making of 2048 is gone when it's mostly random physics that decide what will happen next. So I just spammed the left mouse button wherever I felt like it, which was still fun :)

Also I have to say if it's really mostly AI-generated (and not just using AI for inspiration, or maybe a starting point that you deviate from considerably), I also think you should opt out of the respective categories, it also states this in the [LD rules](https://ludumdare.com/resources/questions/can-i-use-ai/):

> That said we still **want to celebrate artists**, which is why **we ask those using AI tools to opt-out of artist categories**.

nightmaresdev 2024-10-07 15:56

I like the gameplay of this. Start tiny and merge to grow, get score but lose real-estate at the same time. Very similar to the watermelon game/suika game but with tiny creatures.

Pros: - Simple and easy to understand

Cons: - While you did tag AI for all Assets, just scribble a little ^^ - Sprites are cut off on the edges - Creature doesn't fall down straight - Could have added a little bit of rotation so its not as static

fernando-tonon-de-rossi 2024-10-07 16:19

@rynti Thanks for bringing the rules, this settles the discussion  I was looking for this, but haven't found.

I think it was a nice discussion on the AI theme, I updated to opt-out on these, as it is mostly AI-generated.

Nevertheless it was fun to create and to play. I think the player can control the outcome by dropping in a specific position, but it is also fun to hold the space bar and move the mouse around

Thanks all who played and participated on the discussion regarding AI usage.

sheepolution 2024-10-07 18:14

I don't mind the use AI necessarily, but when it's obvious like this it's jarring, and it doesn't help that the images are stretched out. A Suika clone isn't very creative. The initial balls are also way too small. I shouldn't be able to click on one side a thousand times and that it will all work out.

rickylee 2024-10-07 18:53

very fun! ^^ i used an auto clicker and the animals went insane lool. great game!

sdcorpse 2024-10-07 22:59

I don't think AI generated assets belong in the compo really

mannyfrog 2024-10-08 11:55

It was surprisingly fun. On a surface level I thought it was just spamming the mouse button and call it a day. But in the end you get out more if you choose your drops carefully. GG

This game is so cool! I loved it!

2024-10-08 21:44

I mean, it's suika. And suika is a pretty good game.

That said, I do have to ask about this... I know you've opted out from the categories related to graphics and audio because of the AI assets, but how much of the actual code is also AI-generated? It's only fair for one to expect a person that was willing to use AI for assets to also use AI for code... If the answer is a lot of the code was also AI, then at this point, was it the developer that made the game or was it really the AI that made the game?

I'm not trying to stir the pot or anything, but rather ask the question of where is the line drawn when we're talking about an event where the whole point of it is to make everything by yourself from scratch(at least in the compo)?

nickhellquist 2024-10-09 22:39

Love the art, and fun gameplay too :D

hermeses 2024-10-14 12:58

Very cute game! Not a fan of IA but it's fun to play!
