I downloaded this without any idea how it would look but it was pleasantly enjoyable. Good job!

Does the red zone ever close fully? maybe I waited not long enough to see it, but I decided to go for a walk on the red side.
too bad that there is no background music, would have helped a lot in the mood department.
Great submission and congrats on your first jam! The gameplay was well implemented and you made good use of the theme. Nice job on the pixel art for the fruit too. The shooting felt very satisfying when hitting an enemy due to the great use of the camera shake. My critique would be maybe bump up the number of enemies and fruit that spawn in, because the game felt slow at times. Overall great job!
@xparker no, the red zone does not close entirely. if it would, then the player would entirely be in the red zone and would eventually have no way to survive haha and yes, i felt the need for a background music too later on haha
@jd698 thanks for the feedback, that was the part that I couldn't implement due to the limited time. I had initially made a script to randomly generate the number of fruits / enemies and their positions but it didnt seem to work as i wanted it to, so I set constant numbers for them since I didn't have lots of time to figure out why it wasn't working. However I'll certainly try to fix that! thanks!
@craftly thank you!
My final score:
Red_Zone_nf20PDAwOL.png
Have anyone beat that!
Good job and great effort for a first gamejam. There's even sound and a help-page, wow.
I liked the pixelart of the fruit and the health potion - everything was clearly communicated. I had a small bug(?) where when I collected my fifth banana the red-zone went away for a few seconds, but then it came back...
Maybe you can try expanding on this concept or improve on the next iteration :3
I hope you had a nice jam and maybe check out my game if you like (leaving feedback and giving hearts gets more people to your game, that can give you additional feedback btw)
@im-not-a-robot haha great job on that score! I guess I haven't mentioned anywhere that there are 3 levels to the game and you need 5 of each fruit in order to go to the next level :sweat_smile: well that's my mistake..and yeah when you reach 5 of any fruit (for you, it was bananas), you get a green background indicating that you've reached the max amt of that fruit required in that level.
and yes I'll surely check your game out! thanks for the feedback :)
also to let everyone know - the pixelart for the fruit wasn't made by me. i've made the pixel art for rest of the items though
Congratulations on your game my friend, from what I've seen it's your first, so double congratulations. I like this style of 2d shooter, I've done a few when I was learning and it's a lot of fun. I like the red area coming towards you, it reminds me of battle to the death games. As an improvement, I think it would be cool for the area to advance every x amount of time, and not all at once after the time runs out, I don't know how this would work in the unit, but in gamemaker you can do it like this:
create-
wait=30
step-
if wait>0{
wait-1}
if wait=0{
commandthatmakeareaclose
wait=30( starts the timer again)
}
It would also be nice to have more enemies, it would make the game more dynamic. Ah, don't forget to make a good presentation of your game, make cool art for the banner, post a gameplay gif, etc. Sell your product. Please don't stop at this ludum dare, continue studying, progressing and creating games. You're doing great, congratulations on your game.
sorry my comment doubled lol
@natano thanks for the suggestion! it was my first game jam and i just had an idea in mind which i wanted to finish..i didn't really think much about improving it later on haha! And yes, I have made a banner and a (not so nice) trailer for this game too...I don't expect much from it but it was surely super fun to take part in this. I certainly won't stop here! I'm working on another game right now too and hope that it'll reach a higher level of success. Thanks once again for your feedback!
Congrats on this game! Cool implementation of the theme. It would have been nice if there was some background music. Now it was really silent. The art was simple but nice. Awesome job :smile:
@bredera thanks! yeah, i agree i could've made some background music, but i had run out of time to do that haha
Nice game, congratulations! Good job! Captura de Tela (968).png
@psv-games-studio thanks!
Very interesting game. The gameplay of Vampire Survivor is very solid, you did a great job!
@thyoi thank you!
Good job, nice fruity one~ Very solid indeed for the first gamejam~
@svenerik thanks! appreciate it
I arrived at the most contracted area and collected some fruits. I like the sound of gunfire. It would be cool when enemies get shot to change their sprite to show some type of damage. I think there is no end, right, when the circle became small and I was in the middle, that was it, there was nothing left. I imagine there wasn't time to design the rest. But as far as it went it was interesting. A little more development time and it would have been more fun
I almost beat the first level, I feel bad not playing more of it but I am guessing the fruit randomly spawns at different locations? So it makes it tough to find each fruit every play through, it becomes more about luck. Good first entry though, I like the shaking of the screen the most when attacking. You don't have to worry about playing my game unless you want to, I already have enough votes :D
@lincolnsalles thanks for the suggestions. Also, there IS an end to the game, I just don't know how I forgot to mention it somewhere in the game. You're supposed to get 5 of each fruit to go to the next level which would be harder to go through. There are 3 such levels. After that you're done with the game :grin: I did want to add some small details to the game to make it a little better but yeah due to the time limit I wasn't able to. I was done with all the main stuff but 2-3% of it was remaining due to the time limit. I'm pretty happy for what I did as a first game jam though! Once again, thanks for playing and thanks for your suggestions :)
@beeb-gamecodecompany the fruit do not spawn at random locations. That was my initial idea but my code wasn't working for some reason and due to the limited time frame I didn't want to waste time in figuring out why. So I set the locations to be constant! And yeah, I already have played your game. It was pretty similar to mine in regards to the Red Zone (or the closing boundary), but it was unique in other senses. I enjoyed playing it!
I have a little problem with fullscreen mode on itch.io. Also, in my opinion, the game lacks dynamics. Anyway, it was interesting for me to get acquainted with your game!
@scarytreegames thanks for playing! As you said, the game lacks dynamics. What in your opinion can be improved / added?
And I'll take a look into the full screen mode.
@thecaptainbuster, I think you need to increase movement speed first. Next add more enemies and weapon types :)
@scarytreegames Hmm okay, thanks for the suggestion! I might not work on the game too much now but if I do then I’ll keep this in mind :grin:
interesting game
A good start, even better than many, there is something to work on, but I’m also seeing yours for the first time
It was a bit difficult to find all the fruits, I couldn't get all of them in any of my tries. There also seems to be some unbalance between the enemies, sometimes they needed lots of shots to die, but other times two shots were enough. Still, you have a great base here, keep working on it!
Congratulations on finishing the game jam! The core loop of the game is intact, yet I found it hard to find enough fruit, or know how much health enemies have less to know if I hit or not. Maybe arrows at the edge of the screen could point toward the fruit, or some other game mechanic to help the player track them down. Just having much more fruit and danger could work too.
Something to also consider is limiting how fast the player can shoot between bullets, and letting holding down the click button shoot as fast as possible. Otherwise letting the player shoot as fast as they can may encourage accidental hand strain.
I also liked how responsive the game is to mouse movement. The trooper characters also fit in well with the gritty landscape.
Came back to some of the games I remember from the rating period :) Congrats on finishing your first jam!! For over 2100 entries in the jam, that is a great score for a first time! Good luck on your next one? ~
@im-not-a-robot thanks!
