Very cool graphics style, I like it. Old-fashioned music also sets the entourage. A very high-quality project for jam)

ethernalstudio 2023-05-02 18:08

Pretty good graphics. Honestly for a game Jam a really good game.

farfadet46 2023-05-03 11:49

i can't play it. when i click on the link, firefox open the link like a file.

nozomu57 2023-05-03 17:07

I agree: for a gamejam game, this has lots of levels and art packed into it, good job! Also if you were going for the feeling of painfully hard old platformers, you nailed it :) Sometimes it was too hard, so I needed to force my way through enemies at the cost of a couple of lives. Also I did not realise until much later in the game that you jump further without burger: previously I just ran around with it always in my hands. Maybe you could add pretty early in the levels a forced high jump so the player knows he has it in his arsenal.

Anyways, I enjoyed playing your game, pretty solid submission!

neobit 2023-05-04 02:27

What a addictive game! The vibrant colors make it a joy to play. The gameplay is simple yet challenging. The music is also great and really adds to the overall experience. It would be good to have more visual feedback in taking damage, besides that... Highly recommend giving this game a try!

jamie-whitmarsh 2023-05-04 02:36

I enjoyed the vibe! Threw my burger too far and got stuck. Fun though!

fruitflinger 2023-05-04 02:47

The jump has a hitch in it. could figure out how to open the door. Not sure if I can reach the ledge above. Not sure how to grab the burger? I just got some coins. What is the delivery aspect?

x16 2023-05-04 02:56

@fruitflinger

Press E/F/X to pick up and toss. You need to bring the burger to the end of the level to make the door open. Please, play the latest build where we fixed the most annoying bugs.

kevin-scroggins 2023-05-04 02:59

Thanks for all the awesome feedback! Really glad to hear everyone is enjoying the game. @jamie-whitmarsh There was a little bug in version 1.0.6 that broke item pickups, sorry about that! It will be fixed in 1.0.7. You need to carry the burger to the end of the level in order to unlock the door!

droiddare 2023-05-04 15:33

I love the art style here, well done. Great mix between Mario + Duke Nukem! Some levels seemed a bit difficult to start with but once familiar with collisions etc. it ended up playing smoothly.

space-games 2023-05-04 15:44

I loved this! It reminds me of a super old arcade machine and I love it!

rayqdr 2023-05-04 15:54

Awesome little game ! I found the jump a bit floaty but beside that, i loved the music and the game is really enjoyable. Maybe the starting text is a bit fast ?

mickxe 2023-05-04 15:59

Good job! The jumping takes some getting used to. :D

x16 2023-05-04 16:10

@rayqdr

Thanks for playing! We are planning to fix the intro speed with our next update.

flashviper 2023-05-04 20:33

Like the graphics, like the gameplay, only thing I would add would be more feedback when you get damaged. Nice game!

smoky01 2023-05-05 06:03

Very good and interesting idea))

antti-haavikko 2023-05-06 06:45

Nice DOS days vibes! ๐Ÿ‘

Started off very easy but the last level did give me some challenge. But not a good type of difficulty though. Blind jumps and trappy places where you throw your burger to the void etc. At least there was an endless supply of 2-ups.

Screenshot 2023-05-06 at 9.04.38.png

Another big issue was the huge enemy hit boxes. They just weren't fair and impossible to estimate. And the getting hit feedback was so slight that quite often didn't even notice until later that you had taken damage. And on the other hand, the coin hit boxes were too small so especially on stairs you had to even go mega slow or do this awkward back and forth moving.

duke-coins.gif

The intro was weirdly paced. Some pointless scenes lingered on for way too long (like phone ringing or the "YES") but then the actual information slides whizz past so fast that I could barely decipher the part of the controls and guessed the rest.

The tunes were great! They had some awkward gaps while looping but that wasn't a big issue. That one piece was just straight up Prodigy right? All the musics and art too fit the "source material" perfectly.

It was quite cruel to have this tough jump and as a reward for getting up there just an endless pit of death. Having a piece of chicken there with an invisible wall would even have felt better.

Screenshot 2023-05-06 at 8.57.54.png

The throwing arc felt weird. It was really tough to estimate it so that you'd actually hit enemies. And same for landing your burger safely. And it seems like sometimes the burger hurt the enemies but usually not. Maybe I was just doing something else like stomp them at the same time. Feature by the way that I didn't discover you could do until the very last level.

Other than the very abrupt flash on getting hit, it also could have used a bunch more feedback and sound effects on different things. I think sound effects were right now very much under utilised. Stuff like jumping and landing were all silent. Weirdly enough, throwing the burger and having that land did have a sound though. Even the player character walking could have some subtle sound.

Just falling of an edge didn't trigger the jumping state correctly so the wrong walk animation was playing instead of jumping/falling one.

"Come get some..."

Good job! ๐Ÿ‘

**edit:** Oh and one more thing. Not a big fan of whole rejump at landing if you are holding down the button. Especially awkward when high/long jumping up to another platform and hold it down to get the maximum height and distance. And then you're just immediately jumping again from the landing platform corner. Feels weird.

yuriscat 2023-05-06 14:23

Ah, such vivid colors. The art style of this game reminds me of the old days when I used to play games on the old consoles. It's really a great game! Thanks to the developers for bringing such a fantastic experience to me.

kevin-scroggins 2023-05-07 01:51

Thanks a lot for the awesome review, @antti-haavikko !! Was my first time working with libGDX and Box2D so I was learning a lot as I went, haha.

I had a pretty annoying time trying to fine tune the player physics because I was always fighting the physics engine. That's why some of the movement is a bit derpy. I'm sure I could get it just right if I poked it a bit more, haha.

The intro animation GIF decoder was unfortunately bugged, but we'll be pushing an update with some bug fixes that addresses that!

I'm impressed you did that jump on the first level, there was nothing up there because you're not supposed to be able to reach it! I added some goodies up there, since it is indeed possible, apparently!

I've already taken your feedback into consideration and made numerous improvements that will be available in the next release. Thanks a bunch!

kevin-scroggins 2023-05-07 01:52

Thanks @yuriscat ! Super glad you enjoyed it, we definitely had a blast putting it together!

slickclyde 2023-05-07 05:16

The game feels really polished and the art's super nice. It sorta has the vibe of a forgotten shareware game. I'm also glad to see Duke Nukem's enjoying his retirement lol.

yumykon 2023-05-07 17:47

The game has a classic Mario-style gameplay but it's very fun, with well-designed levels! I liked the visual aesthetic, the art is simple but it fits perfectly with the style, the music complements the atmosphere and the sound feedback with the SFX is complete! Congratulations on the good work and great game! โ™ก( โ—กโ€ฟโ—ก )

blackcat508 2023-05-08 00:08

great game! The simple mechanics make it easy to pick up, and its overall just good for a Jam game. One thing I would say is that the boxes dont seem to do much, as they cant be jumped on.

x16 2023-05-08 00:32

@blackcat508 Thanks for playing! You can use boxes and barrels to kill enemies on your way. Sometimes boxes spawn cola or chicken.

rezioz 2023-05-08 00:47

Classical platformer, this never gets old and it's very well made ! I'm not sure if the jumps constently changing height was a wanted thing but it adds something to the game. On the other hand, the burger mechanic felt a bit useless... maybe a cool thing that could have been done is to throw the burger at enemies, or carrying the burger makes you slower ? I'm not sure... Anyway, enough nitpicking, that was a good one !

x16 2023-05-08 02:02

@rezioz

Thanks! The original idea for burger was a bit more complex, but in term of 3 days we had to cut the game design. So for now, the burger only makes you jump a bit lower.

erebrus 2023-05-08 05:40

Fun idea. The jump is a bit floaty. I recommend the GDC talk named "Math for Game Programmers: Building a Better Jump".

nazorus 2023-05-08 09:21

That was fun! Game looks great with top-notch NES-style pixel art, and it's complete with nice music and SFX. Only the jump physics feel a little bit off, but I still had a good time completing the levels. That's a strong selection of levels for a game made in 3 days btw.

Good job on this strong entry, the game looks very clean and "premium" for a jam game. Kudos for taking the time to make the intro too.

jackaljk 2023-05-08 14:34

Finally the next Duke Nukem game is out

kutase 2023-05-08 18:28

Nice graphics and music! I like that NES / Sega 8-bit vibe.

vidarn 2023-05-08 18:43

Wow! This is fantastic! I love the art and the music, and the game is super smooth and fun to play. Awesome job!

mitur 2023-05-08 19:30

A very, very solid game, congrats!

blue-pin-studio 2023-05-09 08:33

Nice game! Unfortunately i got stuck at a part that involved a far jump :( i loved how authentic the game felt to old school games

buumiii 2023-05-12 13:10

I love the old fashioned graphic style! Absolutely fun and brings you back in time :)

stevie257 2023-05-15 19:16

The graphics in this game showcase the developer's progress and improvement, with noticeable attention to detail and artistic growth

vitaslayer 2023-05-18 21:15

It's a good retro-style platformer. The graphics are really nice, and the sounds are pleasant.
