Very unique take on the theme, and honestly just very funny! Art is great, I especially love the sealife (That jellyfish animation is amazing!). Love the music too, very nice contrast from the boat to the more atmospheric underwater track. Swimming feels good and exploring around the place is a lot of fun. Good job!

I had fun with this. Controls well(that doesn't stop me from being bad at it, haha), and I think it fits the theme well. I tried to dive as deep as I could, but quickly died. I enjoyed finding my drowned friends. Ran into the lost items bug you mentioned above, but that was it. Good job!

Cool game. I really liked the cutscene! The music that was used under the water filled me with hopelessness! All the sound in the game was well used. I didn't notice if gathering the bubbles even helped me last longer but that's fitting with the theme I guess. Nice work.

~~Unfortunately, the game doesn't load past the title image for me. I get a "Uncaught (in promise) DOMException: The element has no supported sources" and a "Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 (Not Found)" error in the console.~~

~~It looks to be related to sound effects, so I think maybe you're trying to play sound via a script before the user interacts with the page. But that's just a guess.~~

~~If you manage to get a fix up, just tag me in the replies on here and I'll come back to take another look.~~

Tried it again the next day and it is working. Not sure what caused the error the first time around. See my actual feedback in a lower comment.

I sadly can't rate this jam since I didn't participate but at least I can give some honest feedback :)

First try was a bit weird and I encountered some of the glitches you mentioned in the description (items not resetting properly). So after knowing about the mechanics a bit better, I restarted and got a more generous level seed and was able to finish the game with the second char in this run.

The quality of the art, though generally nice, does not mix well. It's apparent that two different artists worked on this without any time left to normalize the art style. But that's not really a huge complaint in a jam context to be honest. It still takes you out of the experience a bit though. The animations, especially the ufo intro sequence, looks really cool :D I also liked the 3d water effect when the aliens are jumping in. Nice touch!

I was hoping that the soundtrack was also produced within the jam, but at least, the picks are very fitting :) The ufo dance track especially.

Controls worked as expected from a diving game like this and the physics also behaved without any unforeseen issues. Good job on getting that done in such a short amount of time! WASD controls would've been nice to have at one's disposal.

Game play wise, there wasn't really that much to do. It boiled down to "swim down and collect items on the way without letting your o2 run out", at least as far as my experience went. Without the oxygen tank, things were very difficult and it got significantly easier as the game progressed (once you get the oxygen tank). Not sure if that was the best balancing choice. Especially in the early game, you die really quickly if you don't find the fins and the compass quickly enough. A good measure to tackle this may could've been to tie the amount of lost oxygen to the diving depth to make diving in the beginning a bit less penalizing. Kudos on implementing a procedural level generator as well as adding so much variety in animated assets that swim around and wobble in the water (animals and plants alike). Not sure if there are more entities to interact with, but I only found the green spiky thing to be worth of attention since it gives you some o2 back and catapults you down if used correctly.

All in all, good job an a solid, short experience :) Could've used some more variety game play wise, but since it's rather short, it doesn't really overstay it's welcome in the form it's in right now.

Cutscene is really cool! Graphic is simple, but looks cute:D Well done!

human-writes-code 2022-04-06 12:06

A funny (although pretty dark) game. How many drunk partygoers have to die before I realise that there are flippers off to the right of the screen? Four, apparently.

Great art style, cool music and some genuinely funny dialogue makes this a fun experience! I did find it a bit tricky to control the women when they were swimming and the got a little stuck on some rocks but, hey, they were drunk - what do you expect?!

Good work!

This game is awesome. I love how you can build on your knowledge to figure out how to survive to the bottom and warn the others. It fits the theme really well. It was also nice how it got darker and darker as you went down. I often couldn't figure out which direction to go on the way down. It's also really impressive that this was using a custom game engine.

Nice game! The art style is great and fits the theme well. Controls matched the game theme. Well done!

I like the ET body builder

I think I might be doing something wrong, wherever I click or type I can only see this initial screen

mrpouletbzh 2022-04-06 17:20

Nice little game, and an impressive amount of sprites made during the week end! Well done :)

pureimprov 2022-04-06 18:37

Very funny and a good balance for the time constraint, I like jumping when drunk too!

itooh 2022-04-06 19:20

That's a neat concept! I liked "rogue-litesque" the idea of having to do multiple runs to fully explore the level and reach the zone. Each upgrade is very useful, there's a strong feeling of progress. The movements are a bit odds, but manageable enough.

Visually it's also quite nice. I like that there's a lot of aquatic life (even though I thought for long that the bubbles were somehow supposed to refill oxygen). The game bounce pretty well back-and-forth between the humorous tone of the party and the moody deep waters.

It was very satisfying to complete overall. Great job!

thecoconutdream 2022-04-06 20:08

@velvetlobster you did try hitting enter? :D just asking to be save

very-dark-lord 2022-04-06 20:09

Thanks a lot everyone! @itooh Yeah we didn't communicate that very well in the game - there are (occasionally) huge blue bubbles, these do refill your oxygen somewhat. The small omnipresent bubbles however indeed don't do anything.

@velvetlobster glad you could find something likeable on the title screen given that's all you got out of this game so far. :D We kinda forgot to add an instruction there - pressing Enter should start the game. Does that work for you?

@human-writes-code thanks for trying again, and glad it worked then! We also experienced some iniconsistent issues with the sound during development that we haven't fully figured out yet. So not quite sure what's going on there and sorry for the inconvenience!

@radetech the lost items bug is fixed by now, sorry that you were one of the few early people affected by it! :D

@duke thanks a lot for the thorough feedback! Appreciate it a lot, and will certainly take it into consideration in the not so unlikely case of building a postjam version. And good point about WASD of course... in the heat of the moment such small comfort features often fall under the bus, even if it would just take a minute to implement them. :)

boclow 2022-04-07 06:24

That was fun and interesting take on the theme! It felt strangely like some horror film where you are not quite sure who is going to be the one who survives... if anyone! Game play loop was satisfying. Story was also, while funny, also interesting :D Great game!

tomssuli 2022-04-07 11:25

Nice presentation, funny pixelart with great music choices set the mood. Also the plot was funny and the logic of the divers made me laugh aloud :D

Mechanics were ok and mostly worked as expected... I first thought it was a bug that bubbles took away oxygen, but then I found the other bubbles that gave it. Also I tried first catching the small bubbles, but that did no good. I think I found most of the items and I thought I had to go deeper to find more... But as I dove deep enough, the player character just disappeared and the game froze. Is it intended that the game ends there or something?

Anyways, good implementation of this years theme and even combined with the last years theme "We need to go deeper"

very-dark-lord 2022-04-07 13:57

@tomssuli oh no! That was not the intended ending - there's even a cutscene after you make it through. The idea is (attention, spoilers ahead!) that you find four items relatively early on in the shallow regions of the ocean, namely compass, fins, flashlight and oxygen tank - these allow you to dive much deeper, where you'll find a transponder, and if you go even deeper you'll find a battery. Once you have the latter two, your character will contact the crew on the boat and basically tell them to fly home.

If the game froze then that's probably some crash we haven't seen before - if you happen to play again and can reproduce that issue, it would be great if you could then open the browser dev console (usually via F12) and let us know in case you see any error inside. Either way, thanks a lot for playing and for your feedback! :)

vixenmink 2022-04-08 04:41

That party boat music is addicting! I like the concept you have going for this game. The controls were what made it challenging for me but I've never been good at games that require spin-and-go mechanics so that's on me.

First thing I noticed is maybe on first screen, have an icon to tell you what button to start so it doesn't seem like the game is frozen.

Thanks for sharing this game with us

infecsean 2022-04-08 12:48

Very cool party game, quite disturbing concept tho, aliens forcing you to party and then drowns you. But thats what makes it good, love the unique swimming and aliens. Good game.
