Getting really poor performance on this game and it's very dark, might be a webgl issue.

the-lame-brain 2021-10-04 18:45

I could see ok, but the the smoke or whatever can make it hard to make out sometimes. A very neat effect!

I like how you inverted the normal background is dark, foreground is light dynamic, but the player needs something to call them out a bit.

Special kudos for pointing out Strofe.com. I have never heard of that site before, but it looks like a great tool!

cheers!

Good game with good level design. I am a sucker for that audio style. :)

weenie-walker-games 2021-10-04 20:46

@barrier I'm sorry you had issues. I'm thinking it might be a WebGL issue; I tested it on my phone and my computer and was not experiencing frame rate issues so I was hoping it would work for everyone. (The game isn't made for mobile devices but the game still loads so I could see it.)

@the-lame-brain Yeah, the smoke was supposed to make it more difficult to see everything; thank you for the suggestion of adding a light or something to highlight the player. If I was going forward with this game, I would definitely implement that feature. As for strofe.com, I randomly (pun totally intended) had a friend suggest that site just the other day to help randomly generate music. Just by clicking a mood, you can find something cool and adjust it as needed. Very glad I had it for this event.

@myles-doupe Thank you. Sure my wife thought I was nuts as I'm growling at my computer but had to come up with something of this "high" quality for this game!

A good entry, but it has some issues, the main one for me being the colours, everything was so dark and made it hard to work out the path, maybe just a brighter playing highlighting the imediate area would be good.

weenie-walker-games 2021-10-05 12:45

@lakea Thank you for trying my game. Based on the comments I've received about how dark the game is, I went back and reverted the update where I turned the smoke effect on. Hopefully by turning that back off, the game should be brighter and easier to navigate for future players. I will see if I can add a toggle for the smoke to a future build in case anyone wants to try the more difficult version.

Fun exploration puzzle game. The simple visuals make it quite hard to keep track of where you're at (not a bad thing for a maze game). Also the audio is probably among the best I've heard in the jam, creates a really tight atmosphere. Well done!

mads 2021-10-07 07:27

Alright game, there could have been some visual clues to where one is. It is quite difficult to keep track of where one is, as everything look alike. I would have liked that interacting with things was using a button instead of the mouse. Using the mouse to just press on things nearby seems a bit odd. Also, if the movement could have acceleration and deacceleration i think it would feel more crisp, I found it hard to move between squares that only touch with two corners. When starting a new level, the camera seem to move quite quick to the player for half a second or so. Fading to black is a quick way to hide camera movements. I like the sounds tho! Good job.

Those FX sounds made laugh so hard! haha great effort with very interesting visuals! :D

Nice ! Simple concept but well polished

likirus 2021-10-08 08:09

Very nice atmosphere in the game, especially the music is very fitting, it gives it a bit of a mysterious vibe and the lava feels very psychadelic, although real lava moves a lot slower. The art style is a bit on the simpler side though. After a few attempts I made it through the first level, but other than trial and error there doesn't seem to be much of a strategy in navigating the maze. Maybe the treasure chests could have included map fragments as a more tangible reward because they would help the player navigate the maze a bit easier after more and more of them have been discovered. Overall, solid submission.

weenie-walker-games 2021-10-08 10:10

@mads The camera movement was intentional. I was trying to go for an old N64 James Bond GoldenEye vibe, but maybe it was too fast or not long enough to make that clear? As for the player movement, I appreciate the suggestion. Given I have about 3 or 4 different player controllers I own from other parties, I do not really make those so was trying to keep it simple; normally I would just drop in a pre-built one and acceleration would already be included. I did build in a jump feature but never ended up using it once I settled on the tile size for the floors.

@likirus I was debating about a mini-map; didn't even think of having the treasure chests hold map fragments. That is a great suggestion - thank you!

I liked the lava effect! But I think overall, combined with the purple track, it was a little hard on the eyes. Gameplay wasn't too interesting. I think it might have been easier to navigate if there were more landmarks. The jump was quite handy and it saved me in a pinch a couple times.

ubershmekel 2021-10-11 00:04

I could not click to collect the treasure at the bottom left in the first level, I already collected 4 other treasures on that map :/ The concept of exploring to find treasure is cool. Maybe adding some animation and sound fx for when you collect treasure would make it feel more satisfying. Thank you for the game.

weenie-walker-games 2021-10-11 01:45

@ubershmekel Thank you for trying my game. I'm not sure why couldn't collect that chest. I appreciate the suggestion for the treasure itself; I added a light and particle system to the treasure chests and a sound effect, but because the trigger to open the chest is in another area, it isn't always obvious that the player opened the chest.

As some people above, I got some issues with the performance, but the game was nice. Also liked the sound effects, they really add a lot to the atmosphere.

dob 2021-10-12 19:28

Neat looking, smooth performance on my PC and not dark at all as others are saying. I found the field of view just a little too narrow for me - I'd prefer being able to see a little bit more. Some of the jump mechanics seemed unforgiving, too, but I often have that problem with platform games, so it's probably just me. Sound effects were fun, 3D models simple but nice looking, and music was cool, as was the lava effect. Nice work on this.

javasaurus 2021-10-12 20:56

This looks pretty good, but it is not fully clear what the intention of the game is, it feels like a very nice demo for interactibles (I love the shakey-disappearing floor bit, I wish there was more emphasis on that aspect !). I absolutely loved the mouth-voice sound effects, well done ! Thank you for making this, hope to see you take it further!
