Is a great game, with nice gameplay and mechanics, perfect controls. Love that dark atmospheric style.

The game is really interesting ! The main mechanic is clever and the level design serves it well. But I stopped at level 4 because it was really too difficult. The camera could have shown us the way to follow, i think the execution is already quite demanding to bring challenge to the game. Anyway, great game,i had fun. Congrats !

The general idea of the game is great and interesting.

Unfortunately I had to stop playing halfway through since I just died so many times, which is a shame because the game itself is super fun to play. For me, the game was too difficult to play. Turns out I'm really bad at parkouring. The main issue is that there are no checkpoints (at least to the point I got) and there are no indicators where you have to go next. The latter wouldn't be so much of an issue if the game had checkpoints, since the idea of exploring the unknown is pretty thrilling. I also spent quite a while figuring out how the game worked before I even got out of the third level.

Art is cool, I like the pixel art style. The mood and atmosphere are also great for a horror game.

Nice idea for the game, unfortunately the aforementioned points and my low skill with parkour games made me unable to fully experience it. Good job nevertheless.

Quite a tricky platformer with very responsive controls, which also looks great in that eerie pixelart style mixed in with the sound design. Great ambiance !

One caveat I do have is that you have to make leap-of-faith jumps at some point, which could be corrected by having a way to move the camera down in order to see more of what's below you.

Anyway, great job & congratulation for your first submission !

@fingamer @mrjotubes great reviews. I like cunstructive criticism and you gave it. I agree with both of you in the difficulty curve and the leaps of faith, they are just unfair. I appreciate the honesty and thank you for the quality reviews.

Very cool game! Nice graphics and feels good to play. Maybe a bit too complicated at least for the beginning of the game. I would add some text to explain that if falls from too high you die

Anyway awesome work!!

pedrocoden 2021-04-28 18:52

Congratulations! Your game is very well

kamilo 2021-04-29 01:38

It's a really nice game, great level design! I died a lot playing. Very fun :)

miej 2021-04-29 02:12

cool game! was a bit frustrated by some drops that explicitly required not jumping to though. felt a little cheap to die from falling because i jumped to the next platform instead of just walking off the ledge. also nice work with the audio effects! made it nice and atmospheric

re-lo 2021-04-29 19:36

@miej yep I found that bug, but my code is so rushed that i would have to reimplement the entire player controller to fix it... Maybe when the rates finish. Thank you so much for your feedback

shin0nome 2021-04-30 07:58

Great game, I love the atmoshpere thanks to the sound design, the character animation and the light mechanic.

I would have like just a bit more light (because it's really dark in some situations) and maybe also a ledge grab (like when you are close enough to climb on the platform if you miss the jump, because for now if you miss you jump you just fall slowly and it would have been nice to have a chance to climb the last pixel of the platform, I don't know if i'm clear...).

But otherwise it's a great game ! I like the game mechanics and the game feel. Good job !

liked the game, nice graphics, really original concept, gj!

Great looking game with great audio and really good controls. I also really like the idea and mechanic of holding onto walls to slide down slowly.

The game is a bit too hard/frustrating for me though. I did not manage to beat the first (and maybe last) longer level. A few checkpoints would have been nice.

It's a bit mean to have the player beat several hard jumps and then have them die on a jump where they need to learn something new (a jump that actually requires usage of coyote time to make it), send them back to the start to beat all the hard jumps again, beat this new kind of jump, beat several more hard jumps and then have them die again, because they need to learn yet something else (just drop to the next lower platform instad of jumping to it), send them back to the start and have them do all that (and maybe more) all over again.

Those teachings should either have a checkpoint or be taught in an earlier, shorter level.

Despite this criticism I really liked the game, though. Proof of how solid the machanics are.

Also a small tip: I noticed some lines appearing between tilemap cells on vertical movement, especially when falling. I found that can be fixed in Godot by going to the Project Settings -> General -> Rendering -> 2d -> Snapping -> and enabling "Use Gpu Pixel Snap". That fixed it for me at least.

TLDR: Great looking game with solid mechanics that's maybe a bit too frustrating.

@charliegray Criticism is welcome of course. I think you are totally right, all the mistakes you metioned are accurate. The last level(the one you are talking about) was pretty much rushed in the last hour, changing it now i think i would not be fair to the jam, maybe when the rates end. Btw your review is amazing, thank you for the analysis and the tip! I was looking for a solutioon to the tilemap white lines problem

lohii 2021-05-01 08:37

A tight platformer, I enjoyed it. Took a while to differentiate between the platforms I could grab and the ones I couldn't, those could've been more clear. Also, I didn't really grok the distance that could kill you, so some parts where jumping and not-jumping was enough to cross the threshold felt super annoying. Also, I think I got to the ending, but since it was quite abrupt I'm not sure if I missed somethig.

firas-mourad 2021-05-02 16:04

The game is good, I liked the simple aesthetic and the sound fits with the general mood. I did however find the controls rather limited. One thing that might have made the gameplay a bit easier is the possibility of grabbing block edges to climb up. Checkpoints would be a plus as mentioned above. Same goes for the blocks falling/killing distance, I had some trouble understanding that. But good effort in general :)

ryan-dotsikas 2021-05-02 19:44

Awesome job, I really liked this game! It was very well put together and had a great idea at its base. It definitely turns platforming on its head when all of a sudden fall damage is cranked way up. It was tough at points to know if a certain fall meant death or not but you get a hang of it as you go. It was a lot of fun to slide down the walls and delicately land on these platforms. The last level was tough and took me a number of tries but I eventually go through it. You also nailed the mood, with the lighting, the sound and all. Overall this was one of my favourites so far!

After so many SHINDEIRU

Pros:

- well polished design graphic wise - well picked color palette - love protagonist animations - spooky ambient soundtrack - sheer difficulty - good and simple controls

Cons:

- Those kind of games are tricky to make when you need to introduce player to a new obstacle / mechanic. You did it well first 3 levels, but the 4th one was just exponentially complex than all previous combined... - I could not really grasp the point of height at which my player would die. That means, there were part in the level I was sure I would die, yet I did not. However, there were parts of the level, where jumping instead of just moving down was killing me. Kinda counter-intuitive. - The camera movement could not keep up with my character sometimes (whether it was running or falling)

A solid entry nontheless. Good work!

kustav 2021-05-02 19:49

Good game! I really liked the audio and the environment. Also the game mechanics are fun. Would've liked the possibility to use wasd instead of arrow keys as my laptop's arrow keys are quite small. Had a lot of fun still! :)

cdunham 2021-05-02 19:49

Nice atmospheric platformer. Definitely needs a button to manually reset the level, gets annoying to have to wait until your character falls down and plays the YOU DIED clip. Gave up after dying about 100 times, but it was fun for a while. Precision platformer mixed with a dark game can lead to some confusion on where to go sometimes, but you mostly guide the player in the right direction, so good work with that.

merlinnsound 2021-05-02 19:56

The game has a good introduction and shows the player quite well, what are the rules of the game. The atmosphere is amazing thanks to the sound design. The level design felt quite good, except the problem with the big levels, where there are no checkpoints. Controller support might be helpful too. Other than that, it's a well done game.

klaus-peter 2021-05-12 00:22

Last level was a bit long without any checkpoints. But the mechanics itself are really cool. And the amtmosphere and the end were absolutely haunting ._. Mood 5/5
