The sound is quite loud and quickly saturates unfortunately. However it's a simple but nice and easy to understand game you have there, great job.

@raivk Thanks for the feedback. What exactly do you mean by the sound saturating? I get what you mean by the sound being too loud - my computer volume is usually at 18-20 / 100, so I thought that the sound worked fine. I was thinking of adding a volume adjustment setting to the main menu, but I didn't have enough time. The game will probably sound much better if you turn the volume down.
Good game! I like the floating jump, it's well parametrized I think the sound of the shots and jump is saturated and much louder than the music :) The shots of the enemy a little bit to quick (because our character is slow) Good job thanks for your game :)
@chtimy Thanks for the feedback! I added the floaty jump to make it easier to dodge the enemy bullets. The enemy AI doesn't calculate and aim properly, it just shoots at your position, so I thought I should increase the speed to balance the game. My playtester found it decently difficult, which was what I was going for, and he liked the audio so I didn't reduce the volume.
Checked out the game. A fairly nice platformer with shooting. The combat took some time to get used to, but once I figured out how to cheese bullet self destruct (if you back away from the enemy their bullets will expire before reaching you, while the enemies have to move into your bullets and get hit) the combat became pretty trivial.
I do like the mechanic of enemies dropping health frequently when your HP is low.
-The art style however is all over the place. -The terrain is not pixellated at all. -The main character ix pixelated and has a black outline. -The weapon is pixellated with slightly larger pixels and no outlines. -The UI has the pixel size abount the same as weapons, but has outlines. -The enemies are pixellated with HUGE pixels and no outline.
All those elements don't really mesh together. Not a critical problem but still probably should get some polish.
However one problem I have with this game is unforgiveable! I know that deathpits are kind of a staple of platforming genre. But having deathpits in a game where you are supposed to go deeper is an unforgivably cruel joke. Thankfully you also implemented a generoud checkpint system so hittin one of those pits does not set you back by far, but still - bad design choice.
Overall - a decent and playable jam entry. Well done!
@saathvik Yeah it's quite loud, but it might be the retro aesthetic you chose for the sounds. It sounds like its over-saturating, like the sound is intrinsically too loud and so it sounds very "dirty / distorted".
@raivk Oh, so that's what you mean. Yeah, that was a problem, but I was basing it off other retro games, specifically Super Mario Bros. I tried to make the sounds fit the pixel art theme, but combining that with the loud audio probably wasn't a good choice.
@hilvon Thanks for the feedback! This was my first time making a 2d game, and the first time I'd made pixel art, so I wasn't sure exactly how to do it. I'd noticed the combat strategy you mentioned, but decided to leave it in because the combat would be too difficult otherwise, and I decided to make the difficulty of the game lie in the number of enemies you had to beat.
I enjoyed this! The sound effects are quite impactful (if a bit loud) and the gameplay is fun! I was surprised when I found that the enemies didn't respawn after death (but I was grateful for that too), and I like that it didn't start you completely over from the beginning. There were times where, when I did respawn, enemies had health missing still; I'm not sure if that was intended or not. Overall, awesome work! Especially if you've never done pixel art before!
@mab-cat Thanks for the positive feedback! I intended for the enemies to regain health, but that doesn't happen sometimes (Probably because of sloppy implementation of that feature), though in some cases that would make the game a bit more playable. I didn't reset the level whenever the player died, because that would make it too challenging. The art probably took too long to create (most of day one), and that stopped me from implementing some features that I really wanted to add to the game, such as a boss fight. This was my first game jam, and I am satisfied with the result, though I wished I had noticed the audio issue, since that seems to be the main complaint.
@saathvik Gotcha! That's tough. I was lucky enough to work in a team. Still, you did incredible work! I can't imagine doing it all myself.
Sorry I think I must really suck at aiming and dodging. Died twice within 2 minutes š the music and sound effects were good. Movement can be a bit more smooth though. The game's really cute. Good job!
cute game
@charq Thanks! You're literally the first person who liked the audio. I probably should have made the movement a bit faster to make it easier to dodge the enemy bullets.
It was too easy to cheese the enemies by running away from their bullets.
Yeah, Iād noticed the combat strategy you mentioned, but decided to leave it in because the combat would be too difficult otherwise, and I decided to make the difficulty of the game lie in the number of enemies you had to beat.
I really like the shaking effect you added to the gun ! The game is fun even if it's a bit repetitive. But's it's a good game overall :)
That was a pretty fun game! I liked the music, though it didn't feel like it fit the game well. I also found the strategy of just running away and shooting, but it was still fun! I died falling down a hole, cause I didn't realize there were death pits. My suggestion would be to somehow telegraph that the holes are death pits.
Other than that, great job for a first game jam game!
@tim-sims Thanks! I'd made the music before I started working on the art. I had originally intended the it to be vector art, so I made the music fit that art style. After I made the art, I tried to 'pixelify' the music, but it didn't really work out that well. I made the death pits early on, when I intended platforming to be the main mechanic of the game.
Nice game, I finished it! I think there was a point when you had to jump but the platform on which you are supposed to land on goes out of view so you end up falling and dying because you jump to the wrong place. But it was great that you added checkpoints so atleast we don't have to start all over when we die. Overall, a fun game, good work!
@darqweful Thank you! I think level design is one part I really need to improve on. The levels ended up much bigger than I intended them to be, so I probably should have scaled the player and the camera view up, to make the gap visible.
nice game, the music was kinda earrape and animations were a bit confusing, but still good job for 3 days!
@vsi thanks!
Kinda like oldschool NES experience in terms of difficulty and overall vibes it gives. But I enjoyed it playing. So good job and best wishes for your future projects.
@ar-borno Thanks a lot!
Pretty fun game, I managed to get to the end! The music was nice, but the sound effects were loud and got annoying after a while. It would be nice to see some progression in the game, like upgrades for the player, harder enemies, or levels with obstacles, etc.
I did notice that there were some times I couldn't jump, like on a steep slope, but overall it was simple and bug-free. Good job!
@gullyngames thanks!
feels like the audio might be a little off. Also you can edit the size of the itch.io game area to better fit your game.
The foundations of a solid game. I found it repetitive and it was difficult to determine how I was progressing, but the shooting mechanics are all in place for additional weapons and enemies.
@krapht you can enter full screen
@marc-jones thanks for the feedback! I wanted to add a boss fight and different types of enemies to make it less repetitive, but I didn't have time.
