Dude this is something I've always wanted to make! I know it's not finished but man, its 5 stars in my book. Please see this through, I would love to play it, or even just steer the robot around various environments for no reason. A+ on the walking animation too, i am floored.

I like the concept!

mrabnox 2020-04-23 09:08

Cool concept! I almost went with something like this with the reference to "Regular Human Basketball". Looks awesome, and I much think you should finish this!

lamasaurus 2020-04-23 09:09

This is amazing! You nailed the character movement and the feeling of controlling a big robot! I love how the camera zooms in and out around the robot. Please develop this more and keep up the good work!

you have a really great concept with a lot of potential, hope you 'll continue and do something with it

simansimon 2020-04-23 09:39

That's an awesome idea, and it is very smooth! I would love to see your idea in full completion. Good luck with that!

tmpvoid 2020-04-23 15:11

@mrabnox Funny that you reference that, because that was certainly one of the inspirations! The first version of this idea actually had you climb around in the robot in a side-on view, but in the end top-down fit better with what I had planned for the rest of the game :)

tmpvoid 2020-04-23 15:13

@lamasaurus Thank you! I spent a long time on the robot movement. In contrast the camera zoom was added an hour or so before submission, I'm glad that I got it in :)

lamasaurus 2020-04-23 15:19

@tmpvoid it feels like there was put a lot of time put into the movement of the robot and it clearly payed of  I really like how the rectangles that make up the legs grow bigger and smaller to give a sense of depth. But nonetheless should we not underestimate what an impact these `quick` to add changes could have, the camera zooms make it really juicy and satisfying to change controls.

Cool stuff, would have been to fight stuff from inside

likai 2020-04-24 01:27

Dig the movement, it's pretty obvious effort was put into it. I think you should totally try to add some more to the idea.

I really like this concept! I wish I could have seen your vision fully imagined. The mechanics are super cool and I can see a lot of potential here. I Look forward to a continuation of this if you decide to keep going post compo.

awesome concept! the feeling of scale is great. I'm super excited to see how you further develop this. Our jam game is also about controlling a walking robot... https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/why-jeff

Even though it was supposed to be a bigger game, I like the concept of controlling the robot like this, it would be nice to see how this game evolves into post-jam.

coda-highland 2020-04-24 16:38

Big kudos on the robot movement animations! Did you build the kinematics yourself?

Is there supposed to be sound? It's not working for me if there is. Otherwise you might want to take audio off of the categories you're being rated on to avoid confusion.

tmpvoid 2020-04-24 17:08

@coda-highland Thank you! Yep, all custom-made. I wrote a bit about the details of it here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/robot-walk/robot-walk-post-mortem Regarding audio, I didn't get to it. Disabling audio rating is a fair point, thanks :)

nuclearfriend 2020-04-25 02:36

May not be a game but mechanic shows a lot of promise, felt so cool when I stepped inside the robot! Nice work on what you did get done! :)

randomhuman 2020-04-26 09:38

Pretty cool for what it is. The walk mechanics are amazing and based on your post-mortem I think the ideas you had would have worked out really well if you'd had the time to implement them. I love the idea of piloting this guy around a world getting into mischief.
