The graphics and the theme are very good! But the camera made me dizzy :/

pagetb 2020-04-21 08:46

interesting gameplay, good work Maybe it's my problem but when player moving he is behind the camera.

timbaleek 2020-04-21 08:55

Fun graphics, especially the little one rolling. The timing in combat was nice, you could anticipate and dodge attacks, but I din't get the blocking. Nice game.

edgelord 2020-04-21 08:56

macOS build please

doritolord 2020-04-21 09:00

love the sound effects, cute graphics, but i think there is a problem with the torches.

I like the graphics and the theme is pretty good. Reminds me of the game ICO where you, as the only character capable of fighting, has to protect another weaker character. The character also feels good to control. If i should criticize anything, then it is that it is hard to know how the game's systems operate (like the enemy wave mechanic), but i figured it out eventually. Nice game

Remember you! The rest of your games were 3D. This one is very good, congrats!

The concept was good, but I still dont get what kind of animal the small one was, and why does he roll as he walks? Haha.

I liked that you have to manage the bar while you advance, and you get more enemies each wave the highest the bar is. Attacking and using the shield felt a bit slow, if you attack and then use shield to protect you from an incomming attack, the shield isn't fast enough to protect you so you get hit. I found out that shield to take the blow then attack twice was a better way kill the birds, as it seems like finishing sword attack wont get interrupted by using shield, so you have to wait until the sword is back to iddle position before shields goes up.

All around it was enjoyable and the graphics were cool, but I feel like there is something wrong with torches.

I really like the combat. A suggestion I could give is maybe make comforting him let the bar go down faster? It made the game too slow for my taste.

@edgelord - Added, but I can't test it :( There is also web version now.

edgelord 2020-04-21 18:20

@vodzik okay that's weird. The app wont start upon double clicking, but a quick adventure in the terminal reveals that the executable (Contents/MacOS/LD46) misses the e**x**ecutable permission, which can be added using `chmod +x LD46` on unix-likes. I have no idea why Unity doesn't do that tho...

edgelord 2020-04-21 18:22

The graphics are awesome, but the gameplay lacks a bit of fun because everything is so slow in combat.

finn-truman 2020-04-22 19:10

It looks nice (although the attack animation is lacking), and the audio is serviceable because its cute. The gameplay isn't completely thought out, though. The block not being a held button action is very frustrating, because it's a block, not a parry: I should be able to hold the button to block an attack. It's frustrating to get caught out by the attack I knew was coming because the character decided to put the shield down. There's a strategy that makes the gameplay trivial, and therefore boring: a) Run as far as you can b) When in a combat wave, comfort your friend to reduce his stress income as much as possible c) When an enemy approaches, block the first attack, then attack. Repeat block->attack until dead d) If friend's stress is 30-40%, comfort for as long as possible until combat wave e) Repeat

It's all rather one note. There's nothing that makes combat dynamic or organic, it's two people standing opposite each other taking it in turns to do an animation of set length like an MMORPG. Knockback, short attack animations, and attacks that do less damage but hit more targets - like a ground pound (which would in turn give a reason to jump), or a long-range thrust attack - would give the player more options. But when its this rigid, you encounter easy to abuse patterns like I found.

Oh, I loved the way the little one moves! I didn't expect him to be moving the rolling way! It's very cute! = ) I liked the gameplay and art!

lemons 2020-04-23 21:44

Loved the way it rolls!

hamrathdoesldjam 2020-04-23 21:56

The rolling made me laugh. The concept is nice, although the game needs some work. I recommend an arrow to show from where the enemies come - at least for the first 10 enemies or so.

edalbung 2020-04-23 22:16

Really pretty visuals ! And the concept is cool, it reminded me of Resident Evil 4 when we have to protect Ashley from the enemies.

Moreover, I had issues to hit well the opponent, sometimes I was sure to hit the enemy before he hits me, but often he hit me first, it was a bit frustrating.

Overall nice work !

fryer 2020-04-23 22:45

The little one is cute and that rolling animation just makes it better. Very nice graphics overall.

The combat was a bit tricky at first, but when I figured out the attack pattern it almost became a bit too easy. Another enemy or attack would make it more interesting, but I understand that there's not a lot of time to add infinite content, and a well designed combat system on its own is already impressive.

I wasn't sure if comforting was doing anything at first or if there was a hitbox for it. A sound effect as feedback to know it's working would be a nice addition. Also maybe flashing the fear bar to bring attention to the effect it's having.

This game was amazing. Simple mechanics with beautiful art and animation. Some other comments suggest making changes to the combat system, and I feel confident additional features would have been added with more time. The fact that the core fighting mechanic is complete and everything is well-polished means that you made a super successful game jam game, lol.

The only thing I would suggest is making the "comfort" mechanic more clear. It took me an extremely long time to notice it existed, and a bit of time to learn how to use it. After 5 playthroughs of non-stop bird hordes and an infinitely crying little-one, I suspected I was missing something.

Excellent game.

I attempted to beat this game several times just so that that little rolling ball of fluff could get so safety, neat artstyle and even though the combat took a while to get used too it felt harsh but fair. Nicely done!
