yeah this was cool. a bit of sound would be a huge improvement! but the camera angle and overall aesthetic is really nice!

Reminds me of Vette (1989). I guess there is some directions where to take this game further :D Definitely needs sounds and music!

Cool game! The graphics and the mood really feel like one of those classic games from the 90's or earlier. Like other's said before some music could make this game even better but as it is now it is already a fun game.

Cool game. I like the art style and feel of the game. The hit boxes were a little larger than expected but when you understand their size it's a fun game! Nice work.

The camera work is amazing!

Hey, I enjoyed this but the biggest improvement for me would be some kind of warning before the building exploded so you could plan ahead. Really nice aesthetic though!

Nice, great vibe & mood. Gameplay was decent though the pop-in and pop-out of boulders and buildings was a little frustrating. Felt pretty random, so maybe some more traditional level design might work better for something like this. Also wasn't clear at first whether the 30" was distance to the goal or distance from the enemy to me. Props for the MAVS reference too btw. Nice work!

I'm also getting major Vette vibes from this. The graphics, while minimal, work great.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone, it means a lot! I'm glad you all enjoy the graphics, I really aimed for that retro vibe to the point where I didn't leave myself enough time for many of the gameplay elements I had planned haha. I hadn't done any 3D work in years so I spent quite some time on the car. The source is a single TS file (send help) without any game engine so that's why some of you noticed the collisions don't exactly match the shapes, I've taken some shortcuts on the physics side. ^^

@hlo-world The camera is the thing I'm most satisfied with, so your comment makes me especially happy!

Cool aesthetic and cool vibes

picross 2020-05-09 01:35

Cool looking game. I like the minimalist graphics you used, and the camerawork. I wish the objective was a little more clear. Also, some sound would be nice. With some touchups this could be very cool!

Love the aesthetics and vibe. Great use of low poly graphics! MAVS for the soundtrack is also a great retro choice. It would have been cool to incorporate the soundtrack into the game itself with some retro sound effects. Awesome job overall!

guilherme-oliveira 2020-05-09 05:28

Pretty hard! Gotta love the aesthetics and the suggested theme though!

schizoid2k 2020-05-09 14:01

Took me a few games to get the feel of the controls, but once I got it, it was very enjoyable! Nice graphics, smooth camera!

cdunham 2020-05-10 05:15

Love the setting and aesthetic. I had some issues with the camera angle tricking me into thinking I wasn't going to hit stuff a few times. I'd have liked to control the camera myself rather than trust it to not screw me over. It helps with the aesthetic but hurts when you're trying to avoid falling debris. Wish I could've used WASD instead of arrow keys too, but it was still a fun game for a while.

fififox 2020-05-12 03:55

@cdunham Thanks for the feedback. It's actually the physics inside the game that are slightly wrong and different from the 3D mesh (everything is sphere-based for simplicity). It's a bit frustrating to know you've avoided the obstacle and still lose due to it, I know... On the other hand it sometimes forgives you for things that should have killed you. :p

Cool game, I like the look. Didn't realize I was supposed to go straight at first.

fireslash 2020-05-12 04:59

Collision on the rocks was a bit brutal (often you'd explode just by getting near them). The lack of audio and visual feedback on the car's speed and braking also introduced a lot of guesswork. I basically just kept failing until I got a mostly straight shot out of the level.

Overall neat idea, I would have liked to see some more variation in the effects though, perhaps buildings falling over and shattering, or tipping to the side to leave little gaps. Also hitting buildings at low speed probably shouldn't be a game over.

neat little entry though!

space-man 2020-05-12 05:15

Really like the aesthetics, and it was fun driving around as buildings crumble around you. The boulders are a bit random, so sometimes I was able to drive most of the way out of the city with no problem and other times a wall of boulders would spawn right above me and crush my car. The controls also took a bit of time to get used to, but eventually I managed to escape the city.

Good job!

slotha 2020-05-12 05:48

Great Game! I thought the controls were a bit off, just enough to feel uncontrollable, paired with the slightest bump will make you explode, the first game I played I died instantly before I pressed any buttons, I like the idea though and the aesthetics were on point. Great work!

refsa 2020-05-12 05:59

Cool retro style graphics and the core gameplay loop was well made and simple to get into. Didn't figure that I had to drive to the other side of the city until I tried but other than that this was a nice entry to the jam!

prodigalson 2020-05-12 13:15

I recommend adding more options for controlling the car like WASD and/or Mouse as well as posting the controls somewhere as it took a bit before I figured out how to move. Don't know if this is a bug but once I died it became harder to restart because almost immediately everything in front of me was filled with boulders making it almost impossible to move and go anywhere. I think it might also help to have shadows on the floor/car that shows where a boulder is about to drop to give the player a few seconds to react.

I do always enjoy a nice driving game. With some music/sound and turning down the speed at which the boulders appear this can be a nice game to just drive and see how far you can get before getting crushed. Congrats on making a game

fififox 2020-05-12 13:31

@prodigalson The level is generated randomly, which explains some edge cases like a building exploding right on top of you. I intended to make the boulders spawn further in front so you could plan ahead but I didn't find the time to do it. Regardind the shadows, I actually spent an hour or two trying to make them work but Three.js was not cooperating, so I ended up having to scrap them, but it was something I definitely wanted to have! Thanks for the feedback on the controls, I kind of assumed arrow keys would be fine for everyone but you're not the only one asked for WASD. I'll take that into account next time.
