Cool idea but the dash should probably be a bit shorter.

filip-volf 2019-10-06 21:04

Fun game. It's really difficult though!

bobotast 2019-10-06 21:56

Extremely difficult platformer! I couldn't get past the first screen, I kept falling back to the beginning, or dashing right into a red wall. I wish I could save after reaching the next screen. Also, it won't let me dash if I'm also holding down the up arrow key.

manimal 2019-10-07 05:29

@bobotast thank you for your feedback, there is actual opportunity to save the position with "s" key and load position with "x", but this keys absolutely ruin the theme in this game. It was necessary for debuging the level, so this feature was inplemented but its not presented directly to the player. Again thank you for your time.

Oh god this is a frustrating jumping game, finally managed to get to the second screen but then I fell back down to first screen and rage quit... :D

So I don't know if you gain anything in later screens, but you definetly start with nothing. Art and sound is nice.

ktao 2019-10-08 20:08

Very frustrating and difficult, but still fun. The movement needs some ironing out. If there's a frame buffer for collision detection when jumping it needs to be improved, if there isn't a frame buffer there should be. Many time you can't jump when you're just a tiny bit off of a platform, not fun for the play. It's simple, but still fun in it's simplicity.

manimal 2019-10-08 20:46

@ktao Now I realize it was very bad idea to create a game like this for jam. The thing is, my game will make all the judging people angry and then they go judge my game. I dont want to do this mistake next time. I like the game, but its not great for jams. :(

vilcans 2019-10-08 21:55

Nice graphics! And extremely frustrating gameplay. Thanks for the cheat, I would maybe kill someone if it wasn't for that. But I still couldn't complete the third screen. But still it was good because I wanted to continue trying. But in the end I rage quit anyway. Thanks for the experience!

ferdi 2019-10-08 22:03

Super hard but I'll give you good rates because you definitely put some work in level design and made a challenging complete game. Good job, just mostly addressed to hard core gamers

manimal 2019-10-09 09:01

@ferdi you dont even know how much your comment help me. I was really mad at myself about my game and why I made this game for a jam. i put a lot of effort into this. Thank you for your time.

shrapx 2019-10-09 17:16

I like these hard platformers. I am glad you put that save option in, because without it i wouldn't have gone far.

I dont know what it was with the controls but many times i would attempt to dash, and I wouldn't dash. It is quite frustrating when controls don't go as I expect, (i had control problem with my entry). I found the music frustrating, but i let it play because its part of the experience :)

The level challenges are very tricky and hard, so getting past each is very rewarding, and I was very happy when I completed your game.

I streamed it here: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/491837292?t=04h20m40s

candlesan 2019-10-14 19:33

Very nice sound effects. Particularly on the jump.

You mentioned specifically that you want feedback on the movement, so I'm going to be really picky on movement but only because you asked! * Overall I think if the game focuses on dashing it should give you some good feedback every time you try to dash. Specifically this means * I'd like to dash every time I hit the dash button * If I am not holding down an arrow button, you dash in the direction I'm currently facing * If I'm on the ground, I dash along the ground * There seems to be a bug where sometimes when I run left and jump and then dash, it doesn't dash. This doesn't seem to happen when facing to the right * I'd prefer a slightly shorter dash, but that's primarily driven by the level design. The level design makes it easy for dashing to overshoot the platform. I'd either shorten the dash, or make the level design more forgiving or long dashes.

Really well done. I dig the art an the music. I also like that you put a little trail on the movement. The sound FX on the "splat" is perfect too.

manimal 2019-10-14 20:03

@candlesan i very appreciate your feedback, its good idea to dash without the arrow (i didn't think about that). The range of the dash can be shorter but it really depends on how you get use to it. I dont want to add an option to dash on the ground, cos the rule is dash only once since you contact the ground. Really thank you for your proper feedback!

ogre 2019-10-15 06:41

So hard. I stopped on the third screen, with the double dashes. Couldn't get the third one where you dash right up to a laser beam. Wish there was a little less momentum, and that it would dash even if I wasn't holding an arrow.

manimal 2019-10-15 09:19

@ogre thank you for your time spent in my game. Now I know this kind a game is not good for jams.

schwede 2019-10-15 18:05

Congratulation on finishing your game! Yes it was a bit hard, but thats the way to go with some platformers. I mean Super Meat Boy is also not really easy. Maybe I missed the topic to the theme there a bit, but over all it felt like a finished game. :)

fabula-rasa 2019-10-16 23:17

Really, really hard! I did not manage to beat it. But I don't think that makes the game bad for the jams. Actually, it makes it stand out - and that's a good thing! And those really dedicated (or skillful) will still beat the game and get immense satisfaction from the fact.

I am not all that good at platformers but I still had masochistic kind of fun with your game

gehad 2019-10-17 21:09

a bit hard but really nice game :D

sebastian-m 2019-10-18 02:24

I think you did a great job on the movement, the character feels great to move around and the dash is very well implemented. I know how hard that is to get right.

However, the theme of the jam wasn't present and the music is pretty repetitive, so you get tired of it quite fast. But those are my only complaints.

Overall, great job!!!

manimal 2019-10-18 09:46

@sebastian-m and @schwede, thank you for your review, the point of the theme should be the fact you are falling on the bottom when you miss the platform, so you start with nothing.

zachary-shah 2019-10-19 01:54

Nice platformer! the controls feel nice and the dash has nice effects. I would like to see a dash which is multi-directional so it can mix up the game though. I also think restarting almost the whole level because of one little mistake just became unfair after a while. Despite this, cool entry!

sean-s-leblanc 2019-10-20 06:54

unfortunately i can't say i enjoyed this one, and had a number of issues with it: - making the dash require an arrow key to be held is frustrating: the player expectation here is that the dash button will make you dash in the direction you're already facing if a direction isn't held (in fact i thought the dash not working was a bug until i read the instructions more carefully) - the integration of the theme isn't particularly inspired, and actually took away from the experience imo: the level design's pretty good on its own, but when you have to restart from the beginning each time it feels unnecessarily difficult and tedious. i was only able to have fun with it when using the save/load keys - even if you were intending to make a "rage game", those games are usually quite liberal with checkpoints in order to avoid making folks rage-quit, and instead focus on making the moment-to-moment gameplay rage-inducing - the framerate was kinda choppy, much more so than i'd expect from a simple 2d web game

having said that, there is a decent game groundwork here. in the future, i'd recommend spending more time testing (ideally with some actual players) earlier on; i imagine some of the fundamental issues could have been caught that way

edit: double posted, and apparently there's no delete 🤷‍♀️
