...Now this is one SEXY looking game!

I love the silhouette sunset aesthetic, here. It's also a nice touch that the battlefield slowly gets overrun with bodies the further you go.

Wish there was maybe a little bit more to do (for instance, I never really felt the need to jump at all), but given the polish of everything else, what y'all have managed to put out here is super impressive. Nice job!

drearyplane8 2019-04-30 15:51

So pretty! The aesthetic really adds to the general mood of the game, as well as the inability to regain health, everything adds together for an epic last-stand experience.

agurcan 2019-04-30 15:53

I love the graphics and the combat system feels so satisfying with all the sound effects and dead bodies staying on the ground. However I suggest you include more content because even though the game is really polished it feel kinda too short.

foka 2019-04-30 16:25

@coleslaughter @agurcan Thank you for your feedback! Believe me - we had PLANS for this game, but unfortunatelly time was against us ;) We have some assets for more content prepared already (i.e more skills for our hero) and I hope we will be able to add them in post-voting version of the game.

@drearyplane8 Thank you! Experience you described was exactly what we wanted to achieve :)

notsoepicgames 2019-04-30 16:27

Graphics are INCREDIBLE and the mood created is moving. Amazing game but I agree with others in that it would be so much better if it was a bit longer.

tomasmunro 2019-04-30 17:05

good job man , i like the combat and the art style , great job man

black-potion 2019-04-30 17:13

Loved the shadow + pixel art theme

mharring 2019-04-30 17:13

Well done! As already pointed out, the art style is fantastic. I would have liked the attack to have a little more gusto - maybe thrusting the spear forward more. I also found that if you stand in the same position as the enemy they will continuously swing but never hit you. Overall an enjoyable entry!

bitron 2019-04-30 17:13

Now this is one good looking game! Gameplay is rather simple, but the graphics and mood make up for it.

lorwon 2019-04-30 17:20

Very nice graphics good job.

The gameplay is simple but it work's, the theme is quite respected, but it would be better if you add more features linked to the health. I do not know if it's a bug but the score do not reset after a game.

naruvan 2019-04-30 17:21

This game looks amazing, Very stylized and nice! Bodies laying all around you while you fighting for your life! I hope you will develop it further!

manuel-rauber 2019-04-30 17:38

Graphics are fantastic. Gameplay is nice, but very simple.

foka 2019-04-30 17:49

@mharring @lorwon Thank you very much for your feedback and bug reports. We'll take look into it.

skyball 2019-04-30 18:52

i really like the way the game looks!

grllle 2019-04-30 20:29

Let the bodies hit the floor. I was hoping for some enemy variants but it was a fun concept as it is. Needless to say the art is top notch.

paulhocker 2019-05-02 04:53

huzzah -- another godot game -- really nice work here -- mood and graphics were top notch -- great gameplay -- thanks for making it

flamus 2019-05-02 11:42

Nice looking graphics, enjoyed the simple gameplay.

tiagorrech 2019-05-02 11:47

Rare to see a game made on Godot!

You guys nailed the aesthetics. The shades of red evoking blood and the impending end, which is also alluded to by the setting sun... very nice!

sarneh 2019-05-02 16:26

@paulhocker @tiagorrech Yes! Actually we were making games on LD in Unity before, and wanted to give Godot a try. And it was an amazing experience! Most probably we'll not look back on Unity for a long time :D Thanks for the reviews!

@flamus Thank you!

dracodi 2019-05-02 19:37

Great graphics and i liked the idea of getting stronger the less life you have which perfectly incorporates the theme. Plus first time seeing Godot on here so great job

paul-nadan 2019-05-02 19:56

Sorry to echo everyone else, but the graphics are fantastic! The gameplay was fairly simple, but still fun. It might help to make the timing of your attack more important, like if enemies were more vulnerable right after trying to attack or something. It also felt like jumping wasn't super useful, maybe if the enemies took time to turn around it would become more practical. The look and feel of this was very impressive, great work!

japes 2019-05-02 20:03

Honestly the best looking game I've seen this jam, even the itch page looks amazing. The audio, the dust, even the title - every little detail leaves a great impression.

Gameplay is a little simplistic, but that's to be expected from a jam. (I was looking forward to multiple attacks for "Stab, hit, slam and bash" :) )

It wasn't quite clear how getting wounded effected me? Gameplay seemed the same throughout.

soarendev 2019-05-03 10:55

The Art direction is really great, still I didn't really feel the power gain when my health was lowering. Simple but efficient gameplay anyway^^ GG to you! (oh and the music is great too)

sleepqt 2019-05-03 11:35

Beautiful art, but the game lacks a mechanics, wish you had more time to polish it :( Good job!

paullyaudet 2019-05-03 12:06

really beautiful to watch and play it

sarneh 2019-05-03 15:25

@dracodi @paul-nadan @japes @soarendev @sleepqt @paullyaudet Thank you for your feedback! :) That's true, the game lacks some mechanics, but unfortunately we didn't make it on time :( Jumping was supposed to allow a "slam" attack, and also we wanted to add shield usage. Anyways, it was a great time and we like the idea so much that most probably we'll continue to work on it after the voting's over :)

aterlamia 2019-05-03 17:06

Looks good with a simple moody art style. It does feel a bit slow for a fighting game but when you play longer there are so many enemies it might be for the best

curled-leaf 2019-05-03 17:07

Very good art. Reminds me Rome total war. I feel a lot. Thanks :)

Maybe you can add some variations and items in game.

fanmanpro 2019-05-03 17:41

Amazing looking game. Especially the background battle field parallax effect. Very well done to the team.

boxedmeatrevolution 2019-05-03 17:49

Unique and beautiful style for the art. The soundtrack and sound effects were perfect as well. I may have been missing something, but I thought the combat system could have been made more interesting. Maybe add a few more mechanics or enemies. I would love to play a more fleshed out version of this game. Well done!

gerardb 2019-05-03 17:50

The art is spectacular. For some reason the background is my favourite part and I couldn't stop looking. Got to love those flags with the red bright sun behind.

I think the gameplay is a bit less satisfying than it should. When you hit some one you only get a sound and then they drop dead. Some more punch, particles and controls responsiveness would have improved the overall feel.

That being said I had fun. Congrats :D

ropedog 2019-05-04 01:20

This game looks _really_ cool. The character silhouettes and red sky really kick the mood of this game into high gear. It definitely feels like a giant battle has taken place. The music also has kind of a "drums of war" feel, which is pretty perfect for this game. The gameplay itself felt like it could be improved with some additional fighting options. Maybe some more moves, or the ability to sprint or dodge could give this some additional depth. All in all, this is a solid LD entry. Thanks for making this game!

minibobbo 2019-05-04 21:48

Mood and the whole feel of the game is great. Having played once though (and killing 38 Persians) I'm not sure that I could have done anything differently or played any better. It seems like getting hit is kind of arbitrary. If there are two guys in a row and they block your first hit they are going to hit you back and there is nothing you can do about it.

This was very impressive for such a short time! Well done!

hawec 2019-05-06 13:55

Excellent art and audio!

Unfortunately the gameplay gets a little bit repetitive - more enemy types or depth in the combat would go a long way in increasing the replayability. However I understand that resources are tight in a jam like this. The connection with the theme is kinda there, but I feel like a lot more could've been done in that regard.

Overall it's a fine entry! Good job!

solifuge 2019-05-07 09:48

Very, very pretty pixely hack-and-slash. Gorgeous sprite work; really appreciated the bloody color scheme, parallax effects on the clouds, the looming sun, and that the bodies of the fallen stayed behind, as a reminder. The drum-heavy military tone of the music was nice too, as was the way the one-way loss of health ended up making this a tragic last stand.

On the critical side, the connection to theme felt loose, and I'd second that the gameplay itself was a little unsatisfying (note: not typically one for hack-and-slashes!). Whether an attack hit or was deflected felt largely random. I might've been misunderstanding it, but if it was random, it might've been neat to do something a little like Prince of Persia 1, where scimitars deflect attacks that are high or low, based on how they're being held. The player would have to observe the enemy's stance, and attack in conjunction with the down key to slip under a high guard, or vice versa. Something in that vein could turn the enemy's blocking mechanic into a way to reward skilled play and observation!

Congrats on your entry, and thanks for sharing it with us!

ivan-garcia-filho 2019-05-16 13:42

An awesome entry with amazing graphics.

The scenario is marvelous and you could enhance the ambience sfx to bring the user into the protagonist's perspective, like adding some howling wind, the tired breath of the protagonist, some random crows sfx to feel the approchiang death, a grunt sfx before releasing the attack and a "woosh" from the spear before the metal clinging into the enemy's armor, more cloth flapping with the the wind to notice the cape, and some belts shaking to feeel the weight and the presence of the sandals and shield of the spartan.

To enhance the juicenesss and sensation of power transfered to the user, make the spear cross the enemy body and spill blood into a cone behind It and another cone of blood after the spear return through the chest like a huge arch of blood bathe the protagonist.

Wrap up everything wit reverberation and you will add volumetry and sensation of depth to the scene.

Create more random death poses to enhance the foreground silhouettte of the enemy bodies.
