A well-made game, especially for one person. I really enjoyed how selling the different parts of your body affects the gameplay. Two minor remarks: 1) I would use the up-arrow for jumping instead of the space-bar, now it is kind of hard to shoot and jump at the same time. 2) If you jump the character keeps facing the same way regardless of movement direction.

@lex-randea thanks so much!

Admittedly, I tend to either play console-based games or mouse based games, so I feel like I'm still learning what keyboard mapping is ideal. Thanks for the feedback!

Wow, this is lovely. The artwork is great, I love the mechanic and _really_ liked how the game experience changes depending on which parts you sell... When I sold my language chip and the text went crazy, I literally giggled with delight. One of the strongest entries I've played - well done!

Super cool, les graphismes sont mignons, manque peut etre un peu de couleur mais vraiment cool sinon

Artwork was really beautiful and the game played well! Took me a while to figure out the controls but i still enjoyed it. I loved the consequences of losing parts.

All around amazing entry, extremely fun to play. Didn't have issues with controls personally.

Hello there! I have finished it! I think the concept of the game is qutie good as the player have to decide what kind of way they should use to go through each level or only one way to all the level. Btw at the very first when I sold my language chips, all the words became chaos, I think it is a bug hahaha.

I don't know are these bugs or design: I cannot shoot the enemy behind the garbages hill, may be the collider or something has blocked the bullet?

And at an occasion when I sold my right eye, the right side of the screen did not black out.

Anyway nice job!

Didn't have any issues with the controls too. Not controlling jump height feels bad, but there was never a need to make short jumps, so it's okay. I really enjoyed the novelty, though. What felt weird though was the fact that you didn't need nothing from the shop other than the gun and the super jump. But hey, if the only bad I can find in your game is something that was not in it, then it means it is really good! Great graphics, I have to say! From a solo dev, that's a solid game you've got there!

Great idea and really cute art! I appreciated the polish with things like the shopkeeper actually conversing with you and being able to restart from the last shopkeeper when you die - a lot of LD games just focus on the main mechanic so I like that you were able to build up more of a full experience.

The art in this game is amazing! I also really like the concept. Awesome game!

deprecat 2019-05-01 12:56

Thanks @al19890604 - So that isn't a bug, you sold your chip that allows you to process language. Selling it scrambles all the text in the game until you buy it back

deprecat 2019-05-01 12:59

Thanks @eldskald! There are a lot of things I wish I could have designed for to make the levels more interesting (selling all your parts so you're just a head and can fit into tight corridors, heavier-hitting enemies where the health boosts make sense, etc) But I worked with the time I had.

Thanks for the feedback on the jump! I'll play with tweaking it to have more control

A complete (small) game for a Ludum Dare! Well done!

Who needs to walk when your head can roll?

(Please mark the download as "Windows" on itch.io so it can be downloaded from the itch.io app!)

deprecat 2019-05-01 14:51

@steffo Thanks for the callout! Will fix that now

Nice game :D I love the graphics and the concept.

Pretty cool game ! I'm impressed by the body parts that really influence the gameplay and the amount of features the game has. I finished the game three times in order to figure out what each body part / power up did.

The art is nice (a bit more detail on the platforms could be a neat addition). The sound effects are okay but could be better.

Unfortunately the concept of the game works a bit against itself since you have to sacrifice mechanics that contribute to its fun, at least until you figure out which parts are expendable and which power ups are worth it. Speaking of which the game isn't very balanced : the best setup is to sell both arms and legs and buy the gun + scatter. Arms and legs which are the most lucrative parts are the most useless, actually they even give you a bigger hitbox. In comparison the language chip or eyes are major game changers but only sell for one credit.

Overall the game could feel a bit more rewarding, I'd recommend watching the following video for a few tips on how to juice up a game.

https://youtu.be/AJdEqssNZ-U

In this case I think the main points of improvement would be : - enemies should have less health, 5 shots to kill is really too much (for instance regular bullets could be a 2 hit kill, and instead of scatter you could have super bullets that OHKO) - to maintain a bit of difficulty there could be more enemies instead (however right now the game isn't that difficult once you know what to sell/buy and where the enemies are located) - the bullets should be bigger

All of that said I still think this is a solid game, I point out these possible improvement in the hope of being helpful. Good job !

@ashtrail this is really awesome feedback! Thanks so much for the detailed review!

I feel like balance definitely was sacrificed due to lack of time, and I had originally intended for there to be more of a cost to selling certain parts (movement speed slowed when you sell your legs, or even some benefits such as selling all your limbs to fit into small corridors, etc). I'm glad someone noticed!

First things first that's super dope of you to include OpenDyslexic as a font choice.

Anyway, I'm a big fan of the cute+creepy vibe you got here. My green one-legged very good boy versus the evil (and very funny) trash salesman and his goonies (that's my headcanon anyway) plus the neato minimalistic music all contribute to a very good vibe.

Selling the eyes might be a bit too much, haha. The first time I sold my left eye I immediately closed the game and restarted. Furthermore, being able to buy scattershot without having the gun left me a little confused.

I really liked how it was actually possible to avoid most of the enemies! Again, my green-legged boy is a very good boy and doesn't like killing. Unfortunately, I did have to buy the gun at the end to climb the trash tower.

Overall, I definitely enjoyed it. Cohesion is the #1 thing I try and look out for in LD games and this one feels like a cohesive, designed game.

And last, having the end credits be scrambled (and therefore making me realize the real sacrifice) was pretty clever.

Very short but focused game. I like how selling each part affected gameplay. It seems that there doesn't seem to be any coast for selling just on leg? I think you can move just fine. Maybe it was due to time constraints.

The graphics are simple but they do the job. Someone else commented on adding juice to the game. I think he's right, the gun shots don't feel impact full.

The story is pretty simple but it meshes well with the gameplay. I assumed that the merchant was goin g to backstab at the last moment out of jealousy. The end felt a bit anitclimactic.

Overall, good job with your first game.

dock-frankenstein 2019-05-02 13:02

When I sold the language chip every text started freaking out, which was so cool.

deprecat 2019-05-02 13:10

@jjjjason thanks so much! I'm slowly working to incorporate accessibility features and with the game being text heavy I wanted to account for that.

Ps, my friend beat the tower by just buffing up on health and shield and powering through, so while I haven't seen a full pacifist run, I bet it could be done

fidrik 2019-05-02 18:28

Nice entry, the art style was very clean, enemies have used used some movement animation though. I think the idea is cool but I felt like there wasnt much downside to losing your arms, as the gun was above my head. But its a nice concept and makes you think of what you need to sacrifice to get past the next part of the level. Great job!
