Very Nice work utilizing the algorithms and diagrams! Keep on trucking!

Pretty cool! quite a simple game. it'd be nice if there were like points or items perhaps. like maybe water to put out some of the fire temporarily, coins that are risky to try to collect, etc. the mood was a bit bland some music would be nice. it was also kinda hard to tell where i could go because i couldn't really tell how much of the trees i'd collide with. overall pretty fun and a solid entry. keep up the good work!

Cringy, but i like it!

chocolat-endive 2018-08-13 18:52

Some music and, points, and bonus could have been cool. The procedural generations works really well.

Oh no! [Screen Shot 2018-08-13 at 5.17.52 PM.png](///raw/036/a1/z/18adc.png)

I will say, this feels very luck-based — it felt like I was just in a random direction, hoping to find the exit before the puzzle became impossible.

Dig it. I escaped! Well done!

Really great job. I love the procedural nature, the algorithms are very well implemented, you can always find a way out. Even though I got into some weird situations. Capture.PNG

The sound effects were a bit too much, but it made it funny. Overall simple but fun game.

PD: Not sure why did you use Dijkstra. What was the purpose of finding the shortest path?

ryan-wickman 2018-08-15 02:44

@sebastian-m I use Dijkstra algorithm to find the path from the player to some point onto the map. The points are generated randomly, but the areas are created using Voronoi. I then remove the trees from the all the areas along each path. I hope this explains it, if you have any more questions don't hesitate to ask!

Excellent use of proc-gen, great work!

manusaiz 2018-08-16 15:29

Nice work on adding variety with the algorythms, it is always nice to see a dynamic forest!

I felt the stress of being about to burn, but I cracked myself when I saw the fart, wtf?? is that normal during a fire? I mean, it didn't happen to me playing Firewatch. (But firewatch wasn't that realistic anyway).

Now seriously, good job on the mood, and humor too!

I really like how you can always find a way out. Good job on making that work as it could not have been easy. However it can sometimes be hard to tell if the trees are far enough apart to walk between.

Sorry, but it felt like the gameplay should have been more intriguing for a JAM game.

ogma 2018-08-19 00:51

I played on the web build and had no real problem whatsoever. I got a bit stuck on some trees and to force a bit through but I always managed to get to the end of the level and I freed the little ranger, nice job on the gen part be it for the trees, the corn pops or the fire spreading.^^

I got a CornPop / Honey ball stuck on a tree in the last level but that's the only bug I had.

The graphics are simple but correct, I liked the cartoon style nice a uncommon choice. :) As for the audio part, I heard no music and "caught" two sounds which were correct.

The controls were also correct, didn't had any problem to move the green guy and no collision bug. Reducing a little bit the trees' colliders would help moving more smoothly around.

Don't know if it was intended but you can move faster diagonally.

Anyway, good job! :)

Really rad to see you implemented some interesting algorithms in the jam! I like the ranger design and the game idea is really interesting. I just wish there were some more mechanics/verbs that the player could do.

Just some quick, random thoughts: - I'm not sure what the purpose of the coins are? If you decide to work on the game further it would be cool to use them for upgrading your ranger to give them more abilities. - The coughing sfx seemed to just be random, it would have been useful to use it as a warning of when you are close to the fire. - I got stuck in the trees a lot. Often I would move between two one way and then was unable to go back. So I think the collisions need some tweaking. - Some ambient music or even fire sounds for the background would have really added to the mood. I don't know if you have tried out freesound.org , but they have a great library of free sfx and I would highly recommend you check it out for your next Jam! - It is quite hard to see the "exit" gap in the trees and I didn't know that it was an exit until I randomly walked over it. Maybe increasing the size of the gap or adding some sort of sign would really help the player.

Anyway, congrats on getting a game submitted on time for the jam!

If you have some time, I would really appreciate feedback/thoughts for my game, Gut Reaction!

Edit: Looks like I double posted, Woops!

Nice use of procedural here!

larzan 2018-09-04 16:47

Good idea with the forest setting, not only the ranger running out of space but also us on the planet running out of wood and oxygen...
