Haha, I love this concept. Great idea and fun game! Good job!
You are an Indie 500 driver, as well as a expert cook! Left me wanting to complete the first order, but sadly the game crashed each time about 10 seconds after I started driving. It also mixed in the puzzle aspects of random orders from customers.
It's seems really cool, but sadly I had the same problem as @Hello.Coder :(. I will try on linux later and follow up if it works.
@sohakes @Hello.Code Thanks for trying. I'm trying to figure out the source of the bug. Any information you can give would be greatly appreciated. Did an order come up on the screen before the game crashed? Also what Java version are you running?
Hey @arun-donti, I think I know what's happening, these screenshots below explain a little better:

The game is consuming all the memory and crashing! If you see under some seconds it eats a lot more ram and keep going up. It takes a longer time on linux and it just freezes everything when one or two minute passes (on windows it kills the jvm probably). You are probably storing all the references to some object somewhere, and so Java can't clean them. At least that's my guess.
About the game, I could play a little more now. The graphics are really good, I really like the feel of the part on the grill. The sounds is also cool, and the mechanics are really well done. I couldn't make a burguer though. I tried two times, and the customer didn't like it. I tried with two patties at one time but I couldn't assembly it. It fits nicely with the theme too, since you really need to play two different games.
Thinking now, maybe "Yes" means I need to grill it at both sides until the smoke changes, and "Cooked" means I need to cook it until it blackens even more?
@sohakes Yes means that they want that ingredient, and cooked means they want both sides cooked (but not burnt!)
:)
@sohakes I just fixed that memory hole. Thank you so much for finding this problem! @hello-coder you should be able to play without crashing now :)
This was a fun little game, but I have my own problems with it
The connection between the "drive around" game and the "make food game" weren't that cohesive imo. Don't get me wrong it was a nice idea and implemented well, and I had my share of burnt patties before I realized I should probably flip it over, but the fact that I could just park somewhere, make the burger, and then leave to the person was a bit amiss. I get there was a time limit, but perhaps something like the player having to follow a particular path rather than a winding road and slow grass would have added to the connection and difficulty.
Other than that, the systems were implemented beautifully, although I feel there should have been a trash bin somewhere, as my cab was soon full of burnt patties lettuce etc xD
I played a few times (restarting as there was no play again button xd) and finally beat my dismal and initial score of -5 points. I don't think my first customer appreciated having two buns on top of cooked lettuce, all resting on a patty, but go figure I got 8 points xD
All in all, nicely done.
The customers looked so desperate when I came up to them - like they had been walking along the highway for days and I was saving them from certain starvation!
Great use of the theme. I felt everything was pretty intuitive to handle, and this was definitely an interesting and innovative mashup of genres. Great job!
Fun concept! However, there were a lot of problems.
I loved the idea of having two things that required your time, that worked really well. However, knowing when something was 'burnt' or how to 'flip' items wasn't very intuitive. I had to read the instructions a few times before finally catching onto what I was doing wrong.
The graphics also don't really telegraph whether something is 'done' either. I thought the gray smoke was "done" initially, before realizing it was never 'burning', so it must have been a fail. Perhaps maybe include charred gray graphics for the items when they are burned?
Also, the stacking mechanic was a little broken, as it seemed random whether two things put relatively close would actually pick up or not. Not sure what the rules were for that. Also, ordering borked a few times, which cheated me out of getting a positive score (my best score is 9 now!)
Also, I think the mellow music sort of contrasted with the timer challenge of it. I sort of wonder what this game would be like as an infinite game with finances being the limit (paying for gas, burger materials, and using money gained to keep going.)
I think with a lot of rework of the controls, this could be its own little cult classic.
@davidsheadgames with a lot of rework, this game could be a lot of things! haha
We're aware of bugs, so we pretty much just handled the major ones (crashing). The game turned out to almost be too big of a project, but we finished right before the timer!
I'm glad you like the idea, we're a fan of it too. It's quite possible that we'll be fleshing this out into a larger game. Our framework also allows for mobile platforms. Maybe it could be its own little cult classic ;)
Thanks for playing!
I enjoyed this, the driving and cooking are each demanding enough to keep my attention, but I need to manage both to succeed. It was a little unclear whether something was cooked properly on both sides at a glance, and I could have used a bin for all my screw ups. I also had issues stacking ingredients to make burgers, but when it worked it worked well!
Burgers burn a bit too fast, I would have given them more time so that you could focus more on driving while also keeping in mind that you have a grill in the background :)
Fun idea and a fun game overall :)
My game has no burgers or driving but the enemies are still hungry to chase you down https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/sam
Hard to focus on driving and cooking at the same time, but that was an awesome idea!
The burger-building phase is quite hard. We can't be sure how to make them properly and sometimes it just doesn't join for some mysterious reasons ;)
The customer coming to the window was something I was waiting for when starting the game, and you made it greatly! Great job!
good idea and concept. a bin will be nice. sometimes the burger building doesnt work, just have to redo the whole thing. overall it is enjoyable and the multi-tasking part was perfect.
I agree with @ian1337, the cooking time frames could have been a bit more forgiving. Also I didn't realize until the third customer they had specific wishes coming with their order, and kind of assumed the list on the top left was just feedback regarding the previous burger (which is pretty much my fault). Once I figured that out however I created the ultimate burger, only be be about half a second to late, was already dragging the burger towards the customer through my window when the game decided that was enough. :D
Very nice entry, it's a bit rough around the edges but still very charming.
Interesting concept, It's so hard to drive and cook at the same time! I found the music doesn't fit the game very well, and the art need some attention, but overall it's a fun game!
Please, take a look at my game too: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/confessional
Hey! Thanks for joining the stream this was great to play
I loved the mechanics of driving and cooking, literally never been done before :yum:
One thing I noticed was that it was hard to stack the burger parts together in the station and you couldn't easily remove the parts once they were added, making it a tad bit frustrating.
Also I kept running over the customers, I don't know if this is intentional but it would be better if they moved towards the car and walked beside it - Probably for a later stretch goal though
Other than that, honestly unique and great title! thanks for making it!
