Very cool. I really like the concept (and it's amazing how a touch of graphics can go such a long way in interactive fiction). This is definitely worth finishing.

It needs some sounds!

I really enjoyed playing this interactive fiction. (It's good that my flat is still in good condition, gained 0 friend, lost 0 friend). Good story!

diptoman 2017-12-06 05:39

That was oddly charming! Can you actually lose friends though?

steve-johnson 2017-12-06 05:45

No, you cannot. That's the main reason I called it unfinished, unfortunately.

nathalia-hohl 2017-12-06 22:30

Hey, I loved the idea and had fun playing it. Would really like if you continued developing it, but understand if you don't. Sometimes this happens: ld40.1.PNG I can only go between the dining room and the porch, then the option to hang around appears, but what about the guy waiting in the porch? It may be due to the game being unfinnished, but was this part intended to work somehow?

Despite anything, nice work. =]

steve-johnson 2017-12-07 06:46

@nathalia-hohl It's just unfinished! It makes you visit 3 rooms before you're allowed to advance time ("hang out").

Cool concept and writing, I played twice and some of the decisions really impact the outcome, but it's clearly missing a big part of the content. I would gladly play a finished version of it.

I like the idea. Theme connection was a bit odd. Graphics were cute. Scrolling thing was off-putting UI-wise. I wish drunkenness had so few impacts in real life. I'd have enjoyed more things to set the mood, including sweet party music, and of course a completed story :)

randomhuman 2017-12-13 14:03

This is definitely an interesting concept and a promising start, but unfortunately the content just sort of peters out when Chris shows up and before there is any real gameplay. I would like to play it again if it is ever completed. I love the little pixel art portraits as well, they add a nice bit of flavour :)

steve-johnson 2017-12-13 20:48

@lars-dk Thanks for the feedback! What would you have preferred instead of the scrolling behavior?

enot487 2017-12-14 17:13

It was interesting to follow the progress of this story. Dialogues are read easily and reveal the characters well. It's great that the choice of answers affects the course of events so significantly. I think it would be cool to add more variations to actions or answers in dialogues, more connections between actions and characters. Good luck with the finalization of this nice game!

Not bad for an unfinished game! It's not very challenging because of the shorten-my-game-due-to-not-enough-time syndrom, but it could be, with only a little more unexpected guests. ;) (and I can't stop thinking about that poor invisible Chris XD) I played a bunch of differents games and saw some of the different endings, it was fun although it was short. Maybe a simple but coloured background would have add to the mood, too.

@steve-johnson I think the issue is that the text always comes against the bottom of the screen and appears before the scroll finishes, giving the illusion that there's a long article to read. I'd have preferred some option such as: - only showing one text at a time with the option to toggle a longer feed; or - having clearly delineated boxes around each message and no scroll; or - centering / enlarging the current message and have the older messages in a vertical carousel above it. Something like that.

It's nice to see an IF on LD. As a mainly introvert person, this is a protagonist and a problem I can really relate to. I'd really like to see a more fleshed out version. The last three hours are a little void of action. GG.

The [Jumbo Groove](https://github.com/irskep/jumbogrove) engine also seem interesting. It looks a lot like things I've been experimenting with, so I might check it out for future jams.

Despite the fact that the game is unfinished, the theme still shines through.

The idea of mixing the story with the decisions having an impact on the stats was interesting, especially since it opens up more possibilities of early choices impacting later events, without them being directly connected.

From a game mechanic perspective, I agree with previous comments that the appearance of additional text feels a bit abrupt, since the screen does not scroll to the last of the text. A more traditional "each new paragraph replaces the old one" might have worked better.

The instant charactization of the charaters by way of introducing them with a pixel art portrait worked really well indeed, and could even be expanded upon with having their expressions change depending on their current stats.

While it is a pity that you didn't have the time to finish the game, the game concept is interesting, and could be developed further into a complete interconnected story.

All in all, it is an interesting idea, and a fun take on the theme!
