Not too sure what was going on there, appears to be internet based, but theres no indication to the player what is going on, when I click nothing happens. cant restart as i have to wait.
for a suggestion, more feedback to user to say what is going on.
although on a plus, the visuals are really quite nice and I like the sound of the premise. with a little more info to the player, would be good to give it another try.
I'm looking into it. I'll also try to reset the energy system so at least you get some impression of the game.
It looks like my websites aren't serving https securely yet, something I ordered for just yesterday. The game relies on that working, so I'm suspecting that's the reason.
Edit: Yup, it was. New working builds were uploaded.
This is... interesting. I think at very least it achieves its goal of being an genuinely terrible social game, so that's good, I think.
A little birdie told me this game was fixed. It is a shame to hear that there were issues at first, but bugs in game jams games is just par for the course. Fore what it's worth, I really like the idea and the lighting looks quite nice.
Loved the idea you discribed. Somewhat ironic.
Please play, rate and comment our game aswell: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/disaster-on-nebula-one
My favorite part is the part with the bananas after your energy replenishes for the third time
Game doesn't appear to work... get the start up instructions... get to where you click.. and nothing but power going away :(
@jason-kennedy Thanks for the bug report. Not sure what's going on, to be honest. Looking into it now.
Edit: it's fixed. Needed to downgrade PHP on the database server.
I was only able to put the ball a short ways before I ran out of power, so I guess it definitely applies the theme. I waited around for a few minutes, and none of my power ever regenerated. I'm not sure if you're supposed to play with other people over the network. If so, maybe provide a single player option as well. I would recommend texture mapping the ball and ground and maybe change the shading type to make it look more realistic. It looked like there were debug messages on the "Pause" screen. If I was able to play further, I would have liked to see different golf course layouts instead of just one big square.
Interesting concept, though there was no one else online when I played and I ran out of energy. I checked the next day to see if it recharged but was still empty. Could be cool to see working, may check back later!
Made this in "io" concept on mobail! Nice
Sadly didn't work for me, golf ball didn't move at all. I'd love to see more Networking games in gamejams. Creating one is always a brave endeavor, it's a shame it's causing so many issues. (Also there is no quit button)
@klianc09 I had to reboot the server. It should be fixed now!
Okay, now I was able to move the golf ball, but since apparently nobody else is playing, it was kinda underwhelming pushing the ball a few meters and then running out of power.
I am intrigued by the idea of it, but overall it's sadly a kinda disappointing experience. Don't get discouraged though, everything is a learning experience. (Just read your post-mortem, and saw that you are fully aware of this. :D)
@klianc09 Agree with all of your criticisms. There definitely was a lot more self-aware jokes and game mechanics I wanted to add in to create a more entertaining experience, but getting the basics working took long enough to construct. Still, a disappointing experience was somewhere within the ballpark of what I was aiming for.
OK, had to restart the server again. I haven't figured out why it stops working in the middle of serving, so restart it is for now.
Aw man I wish I had seen this back when there were more people playing, this is the first LD game I've played with a server connection. I have to hand it to you, doing anything with an internet connection is a hundred times more difficult than a single-player affair. I notice that simply logging back in and renaming myself didn't regenerate my energy :P I can only imagine what havoc several players could bring down upon that poor little golf ball. One little thing that would have been nice to see is a "last action" message or similar, showing the last time a person interacted with the ball, and perhaps even how many times it has been putted and by whom.
@joebeard Holy cow, we must think alike. I've been wanting to do that from the very beginning, but didn't get a chance to put it in!
Nice collaborative idea, it reminds me of reddit's /r/place experiment. I had no one to play with so I had no chance but I get the concept. I expect it to be more fun when more people are on the server. The art is really nice and simple, I like it. The game lagged a lot for me (seems to be the case for all online games I tried in the jam so it is probably my problem). Overall, I like the idea and wish to get a better experience of it when it gets more popular. I think it could also have a competitive side where multiple balls exist and each player can choose to spend his energy helping a certain ball or ruining the efforts for another ball and each ball would have a counter for how many times it entered the hole.
Good point in innovation, but I think it can be a bit frustrating to wait the energy to regenerate. Menus and tutorials are so solid, so good point on that. Music could have done a great good to this project :)
Good entry!
Unfortunately I was alone (or at least it felt like I was), but other than that, the controls were quite weird and the energy was used a bit too fast. I think a good addition would be to have the ball and everyone's energy reset when it hasn't been pushed for 5 seconds. Gotta say I love the idea though, so you get extra points for that and I'm looking forward to playing your game next Ludum Dare
Nice graphics. I read the post-mortem and it sounds like a fun concepts.
Unfortunately without much feedback and no (?) other players the game is just confusing... It was really weird how slow the ball moved in my first trial (before reading the post-mortem)
