Updated the game to better handle keyboard events
Updated again. The Ludum Dare version is finally on par with native versions.
Updated to make it playable on mobile, with touch controls.
haha, I'm a sucker for outrun games... especially for ones where you can magically drive from Rio to Lisbon via Canada xD
The collision detection was a bit frustrating in that if you hit a car, you'd stop - and the car you hit would slowwwwly move away, so you'd just hit it again. It would be better if the car zoomed off faster so you had a chance to avoid it.
It was fun though: i played it for way too long!
Thanks! I will eventually get back to it and fix this aspect. I was so displeased with the collision that I even considered removing the other cars. the amount of work put into rendering those convinced me to keep it, tho.
I had more courses planned - I might get back and add it. and a proper ending? yeah, lots of plans :)
i'm fashinated by pseudo3D and outrun like games this mostly seems like an exercise for you on the subject, more than an actual game good effort anyway!
Finally, an inventive interpretation of the theme! Fun one, I even like the motor sound :-) The collisions are frustrating, and the other cars might benefit from being in a different color. And nice car graphics by the way!
Did some tweaking to address the issues still plaguing the game. Now the enemy cars are grayscale sprites and collisions will make the enemy car leap ahead with more room to the player to manouver away from it.

I get 'ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT' - is something wrong with your host?
Liked this old school race game. I played so many such games 20 years ago.
Going to Lisbon through Canada, so much fun.
It would be cool to have some 8 bit music. ;)
I like Outrun type driving games too... Maybe I should make one some day.
Still have Outrun on the computer too...
and I think I played it for 6 loops or something before quitting... it's more fun than it looks.
(and i dont like when i crash into a car it comes back in the distance... and because it's so short distance, i cant avoid hitting that same car again...)
Yeah a OutRun like ! thanks for your game, And Congratulation for your courage to code in C++ ^^
@takusan maybe a temporary glitch? seems to be working fine for me. What browser did you use to try?
regarding the "doing in C++" thing, I might even try to port it to MS-DOS eventually :-)
Gotta admit that while Outrun was the main inspiration, I was really aiming for the graphical style of TopGear
Haha, I dig the glitchy backgrounds and how the other cars usually show up from way outside the road.
It does capture that OutRun fun factor - especially when turning the sense of speed is great. Good simple sound effects too. I'd try and get rid of the green grass background and make something nice and glitchy like the far backgrounds, and maybe change the car design to match that as well.
This is a really nice little game about what's important to you (sorry if I'm being too presumptuous), and that's really awesome to see :)
Also, even if it was kinda buggy, it's cool to see a retro style aesthetic. I don't mean in the pixel art kind of way, I mean in the it has the genuine feel of an old arcade game kind of way.
Nice effort into making a super scaler racing game, I ended up unable to avoid the second car on the track though, the sprite was essentially homing in on me and leaving no way to get past it which is a bit frustrating but the basics are covered.
I loved the Top Gear series, so it was great to try out your game. Maybe the track, distribution or amount of cars need some tweaking to give gameplay more fluidity. I didn't love the sound you chose for the car starting and maybe the car engine sound was missing. Anyway, you kind of achieved the classic feel of these old video games, so congratulations on that!
I really like your game! I love the art style, really reminds me of old school racing games. If you don't mind, you can play my game here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/earth-invaders
Super impressive you did this from scratch, but oh maaaan there are too many cars and you go way too fast!
Love a racing games! I like it! 5 stars!
Technically impressive with the oldschool road and everything. Works like expected!
A bit hard to control though, seems very hard to avoid enemy cars. Am I missing something?
Reminds me of the old Pole Position games :)
A little wonky with the 3D rendering... the movement of the other cars isn't very predictable and it's really hard to avoid them (especially after recovering from hitting one!).
I noticed that being in grass isn't that much of a disadvantage, so you can just sit off to the side and spam up arrow with no drawback.
Other than that, nice job for a 48-hour game jam. Well done!
I want but can't to play your game. Got 404 error after clicking the link
Kinda good, but I don't know, I felt the inspiration of old car games but.... really I don't know what's missing. I had a game that ended at 300 points.... and the next game I had 4500 not doing anything more.... maybe I just didn't get the controls or something....
Anyway great job ! It also maybe lack some kind of entertaining music that will push you to continue ! I think I would loved that :
@rubel-nmb - that's weird! And you're not the first person to tell me this, but I can play it fine from the link...
@gozz - my original plan included a "select your music" screen, just like in Outrun...but then I realized I have exactly 0 songs I could use with this game ;-P But yeah, music would certainly help making the mood!
@jeremy-ryan and @symmsaur - since the rendering was all homebrewed, like in the old days, it's kinda of wonky to properly position things where they were supposed to be; thus, the grass, your car and other cars are *almost* where those were supposed to be, but not quite...
Hey this is actually really cool. And thank you for sharing the source code to this. I've been looking for how to do this sorta psuedo 3d road for the longest time.
This brought me flashbacks of outrun. I really enjoyed this. You should do that space motorcycle one next. Overall the game is good, the progression is there and I played it for a bit. I got a little confused with the placement of the cars on the road as the road spins around but it was still fun regardless.
Firstly - huge respect for doing this in less than 72 hours. Like you I have always wanted to try and make one of these games (although my greatest influence would be "Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge" on the Amiga).
There are some issues with the game-play at the moment - the biggest for me was not being able to judge where the other cars were on the road as I was going round bends - so I was just hitting them over and over again.
If you could fix these little issues and add sound then this would be a wonderful homage to Out Run! Excellent work.
Enjoyed my time with the game, I thought the game ended when I finished Lisbon, and didn't notice until looping a couple times that it goes on (forever?.) I found myself wishing that you could speed up by just holding the up arrow. The sound was quite loud, and scared me a little bit when I first crashed, resulting in me having to turn my volume down quite low to make the sound not so intrusive.
The cars seem to be off of the road (and sized really strange) for me. It makes it really hard to play.
Other misc. feedback: -Some music would be nice -More interesting scenery would be nice -The graphics are simple but the feel definitely reminds me of those old arcade games.
I really enjoyed this! Love the graphics, sound and gameplay. Took me back to Pole Position on the 7800 (and of course outrun, also cruise'n world.) Played through the world a few times- then, skidded off the road for about and 20 seconds and the screen froze on this- just thought you might wanna know. Screen Shot 2017-05-16 at 11.06.47 PM.png (mac, safari) Thanks for the trip down memory lane! Congrats!
@izunah, at first, I thought about adding a proper ending, but after a while I said to myself "meh, it's a small world!"
@guitarbro if I were a guitarbro, maybe the game would be more musical ;-P
@joemid thats quite bizarre! also surprising that it runs on Safari at all - I didn't test it (despite also using a Mac). And the 7800 is such a underrated machine...
Thank you all, guys!
Hello my friend. Your game is awesome! Outrun with pixel Lisbon on the horizon, I could really appreciate it. You think I would like was music. Like a transition of zones with different kinds of musics ;) Parabéns amigo!
As promissed, I'm porting the game to MS-DOS. And it's coming along quite nicely!
