I really liked the graphics in the game, they're awesome! It's great that you guys have implemented multiplayer, but it also makes it hard to test out the game, because at the moment I hitted arena, I was the only one connected (so couldn't really play!)

I did notice the "Story" button, but once I clicked it, it didn't really do anything which is kind of odd. There also is an option button, but it doesn't even work! (Just hide it then )

Because I couldn't really judge the amount of fun in the game, I can't really say much about the gameplay, but the overall look seems very nice!

nick-bota 2017-05-01 11:20

@mrgussio that's odd, you should have gotten a character selection screen and a little intro story when you clicked the story button, what platform are you on?

loktor 2017-05-01 11:39

Wow really great jam entry :) I really enjoyed the gameplay and you even managed to build an multiplayer, that combined with all the other gameplay elements in the game i can only say really great job :)

I also really like the artwork and soundtrack of the game :)

Not much to give critique about :D besides maybe that the character selection isn't really clear, e.q. i didn't notice the first time that i can now select a character^^

Overall one of the best entries if have tried out so far :)

gao-ming 2017-05-02 05:56

wonderful game and worth to play.

piscythe 2017-05-02 23:25

The art style looks good, but I can't actually try the game because mouse input doesn't work on my Linux Mint. This is a known Unity bug. ~~If you make a web build I'd be happy to test that out.~~

Update: I tried the web build. Arena was empty when I showed up so I can't comment on that. During the platformer, I fell onto some spikes and didn't seem to take damage. Having an attack mapped to middle mouse was awkward. The attacks seemed to lack a feeling of weight and motion. I'd suggest having the player move forward as they attack instead of kinda floating back to their original position. It seemed odd to me that holding the jump button made you ignore the springs. Still, a multiplayer game is pretty ambitious for LD. I'd love to see a post-compo edition of this.

Love the little characters and reminds me a lil bit of super meat boy! Nice game.

nick-bota 2017-05-03 09:35

@piscythe thanks a ton for the feedback, the web version is available link in the description

zarkonnen 2017-05-03 10:02

Very impressive. Wasn't able to do multiplayer in the WebGL version though. It connected to the server and then just froze.

nick-bota 2017-05-03 10:18

@zarkonnen Thank you for the feedback, that's a damn shame it seems to be working fine to everybody I sent it to, you could try out the downloadable version maybe.

takusan 2017-05-03 10:25

Frist of all: great job!

Very polished visually for such a time restraint (both graphics and the animations). And including an arena mode is usually a good step to squeeze out maximum fun from games like this :) Also good, that you included singleplayer to test out the game quickly.

What could be improved:

- if falling speed would be just a tad slower, it could give player more control, making arena mode more intense

- I feel like moving platforms could work better, if the collision only occured if you hit it from the top, not bottom (although full hitbox is consistent with other platforms, so that's a design decision)

- adding a help (even in description) would actually help - I didn't have trouble, but someone might, since attacks are bound to mouse

- web player can be funky when it comes to arena mode. That's not your fault, web builds are picky - it's something you can work out through playtesting.

Again, great job! Really fun and polished, you worked hard.

Leaving my rating, cheers!

nick-bota 2017-05-03 10:33

@takusan very constructive advice, thank you!

fouralex 2017-05-03 11:38

This game feels very responsive and cute : I love the graphics and the animation : they are great. I would loved to see some little enemies on my way to be able to use these cute attack animations. I love the interpretation of the theme, I really enjoyed playing your game! Thanks for sharing it to me, good work!

plepletier 2017-05-03 13:23

The characters is awesome! Congratulations! I can not play with another players in arena mode. Great game.

turnwolf 2017-05-03 13:40

The game has a good feel when moving your character around. It was easy to pick up and control and visually was quite nice. I felt that the one level in story mode was fairly bare bones however the arena mode was great fun. It was buggy but fighting a few of my friends was a good laugh. There was an issue where you can spawn in and die from spikes and that everyone spawns in looking the same which can make it very confusing. Overall though aside from a few bugs the arena mode was a good laugh and great fun!

kosmo 2017-05-03 13:58

Hello! Great little game, the graphics/animations and audio are really well done. I felt happy just playing it :)

However, I do have a few comments:

* I literally didn't even realize you could attack until I went back and read the description afterwards. There was no impetus to use the attack in the Story Mode, and there was no one in Brawl (not your fault). But even a simple enemy in Story Mode would have made a huge difference there. * Don't put in menu items that don't do anything (Options, Quit). * If you're next to and facing the wall, the the animation goes through the wall. * The bouncy platforms are easy to fall off of. Maybe make them two squares wide instead of 1? * It's neat that I can hold on to the wall, but then I have to just let go? I'd suggest letting the player do a jump off of the wall. * I recommend against using the middle mouse button for an attack. Not everyone has a middle mouse button.

Haha ok, weird bug just happened. I'm letting the game run in the background in Story Mode writing this, and a Soda character starts randomly floating around the screen. He's jumping around on air, and trying to attack a bunch, and then the screen pops up saying "You are Dead. Respawning in -705" and doesn't let me respawn. It appears that someone joined the Arena, and that person started playing over my game in Story mode. See the screenshot below (I'm the Chips character hiding behind the numbers, the Soda character is the phantom one):

Sure enough, I reload the page and join Arena, and there are people I can play against!

The Arena is fun with other people, I like that you can see your health drop as you get hit. However, there was a clipping problem here, as I got hit when the enemy appeared to be facing the wrong direction. Also, the raising/lowering platform showed up to the right of its "tracks". See the screenshot below:

Overall, the game is fun and very engaging, but I would suggest prioritizing more content and bug fixing over some of the added visual goodies next time.

Thanks!

radmccool 2017-05-03 14:00

I think if you focused on either the platforming game or the arena game. as it stands both seem to be lacking. Maybe some feedback on the combat (sfx, screen-shake, etc) the arena would be better. or even just some polishing to the controls and collision (if you're falling too fast you jump straight through the floor, maybe check to see if you pass anything before making that movement increment?).

That all sounds a bit harsh :/ Theres a lot of work done here and it definitely looks appealing. the story mode ramped up gradually without feeling overly simple and had a nice variety of elements. And you had an original setting that even has cutscenes, thats insane :P well done!

unidaystudio 2017-05-03 14:07

That's great! I like the mechanics and all the challenges/puzzles possibilities of the game mechanics. But I think you should explore more this puzzles, doing more levels (just becoause I had fun playing, and wanna play more!). I've found a glitch: when you're falling too fast, the player ignores some platforms and keep falling. I didn't understood the arena. Is it online? Will be great.

Good job!

nick-bota 2017-05-03 15:43

@unidaystudio, yes the arena is an online mode where you can play against 4 random players online, if you gather your friends and you log on around the same time you can play against them, try it out it's a lot more fun then the story mode! Thanks a lot for playing and reviewing!

nick-bota 2017-05-03 15:47

@kosmo thanks for putting in the time to write such an exhaustive review! The bug that happened in story mode made me laugh a lot))), we never seen that and had no idea it could happen. I hope you had a lot of fun, and we will definitely work on all the weak points you underlined!

nick-bota 2017-05-03 15:50

@radmccool no it's not harsh, you're absolutely right we could've done a lot more in these 72 hours and made the game feel complete, in it's current state I admit that a lot of the game's aspects feel raw and unpolished. Thanks for the great review we'll learn from our mistakes and make an even better game for the next LD, and we're really glad you liked the cutscenes :D !

khorm 2017-05-03 16:54

Did you really just build a multiplayer game for a 72hour game jam? Thats all kinds of crazy.

I really enjoyed the graphics and the singeplayer mode but it was so short! Could not find someone to try the multiplayer part with. Something feels a bit off with the gravity or something with the jumping that I cant really say exactly. I jumped around in the battle arena for a while and it felt like a cool gamemode. Props for doing a multiplayer game!

rongo-matane 2017-05-03 17:48

Wow, a multiplayer?! I didn't meet anyone, which is understandable, but this is really crazy. The graphics are excellent and the character is really alive, very gamey with animations and arms. The gameplay itself was clear, although very basic. I had some trouble with the springs, i kind of glitched away on the third big jump. At first i tried to jump at the right moment, which did not work. Awesome that you included two modes and cutscenes. Feature creep :D

Beautiful entry!

nick-bota 2017-05-03 19:13

@khorm @rongo-matane Thanks for your support guys. Unity makes it a lot easier to implement a multiplayer than it used to be, but we still spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to do it(since it was our first time doing a multiplayer), in the end we were very happy that we learned a lot in 72 hours even if that meant not removing some bugs or polishing the gameplay.

le-slo 2017-05-03 20:26

I waited for the multiplayer but noone showed up... On story mode there's no use for the attack so it's easy to miss it as you achieve it by click and not with the keyboard. That's why it's a shame I couldn't enjoy the multiplayer, it seems where all the potential of this game is.

I found one bug, on the arena mode if you jump below the jumping thing you can get stuck until you head the opposite side you are looking for. Also, if you jump on the disappearing blocks they behave as normal blocks.

Really good job.

nick-bota 2017-05-03 21:07

@le-slo yeah we wanted to do some basic AI bots for the arena but sadly didn't manage, best option to enjoy the game right now is to find a friend and play at the same time with him. Thanks a lot for finding these bugs we didn't know about them! ;)

mrgussio 2017-05-06 20:03

@nick-bota Sorry, didn't see your message. I was playing on Windows and the only thing that appeared were the two player characters. Not as an in-game version, but bigger and not really in the level (if you get what I mean). I went to get some coffee and waited until something happened, but after 3 minutes still the same screen was in front of me.

nick-bota 2017-05-08 10:55

@mrgussio you should have clicked on one of the characters, that's the character selection screen. We should have made it more clear, sorry.

thelonelynug 2017-05-11 05:32

Definitely love the concept and the animations are very nice as well. If the jumping and movement was a little more refined this would make for an awesome game. Would love to play more levels and maybe have like a puzzle aspect or something. Great entry!!!!
