Really cool to see a game for an old console!

tasteslikefuture 2015-04-20 19:22

Very impressive format, if a little niche. I wonder if you could actually put it on a blank NES cart? In any case, great work!

koredozo 2015-04-20 19:26

Neat game with an unusual choice of platform!

I never tried it myself, but I noticed in the video you can 'win' a level if two enemies collide with you at the same time--that seems counterintuitive. Not a big problem, though, perhaps even a cool mechanic if it's introduced to the player in some way!

Very cool :) Impressed that you did this on NES. Love the graphics and the idea.

I've not tried developing for NES or in assembly before (well, not since uni)... but seeing this has made me want to learn :)

obscenelytrue 2015-04-20 19:52

@Tasteslikefuture I am not sure... and emulation is so simple.

@koredozo In that case, you don't win... the level restarts.

@thenoviceengineer The NES console is a nice hardware. Try it!

Thank you for all your comments!

Much love for the platform and for the art style in general!

cryotube 2015-04-20 20:17

Impressed that you could develop it for NES, especially in assembly! The tileset/background is well done, but the player/enemy sprites could stand to be less simplistic.

@ObscenelyTrue I'm just checking out some of those NES tutorials that you posted and I'm definitely going to give it a try when I get some extra time. :)

Dude! Hats off for entering the compo with a game done in 6502 assembler! I tested your game on my NES (PAL Version) with the PowerPak to give it the proper treatment.

There the screen only displays the sprites (veeery flickery) when the character is moving, so it took me a bit to figure out how to play the game and i amde it to level 2. I don't know whether it's by design or not but my character goes into one direction (very fast) until it hits a wall with no means of changing the direction mid-way. The mechanic reminds me of good NES puzzlers and the backgrounds certainly look like it (in a good way!). However, declaring the enemies' stupidity to be Unconventional Weapon is also quite a stretch. Nice little game, not quite fitting the theme.

obscenelytrue 2015-04-20 21:00

@Phil Strahl Fast move of characters is normal but not the flickering... I only develop on fceux emulator and I know that there may be discrepancies with real nes. Sorry.

mental-atrophy 2015-04-20 21:55

Very cool--never seen an NES game in a jam before. Unfortunately the sprites are invisible invisible in Nestopia, but do flicker into view when you move. Fortunately it works just fine in FCEUX. It took me a moment to realize I could move before enemies have finished moving, but once I did I cleared the three stages. Good graphics and an impressive programming feat for a jam. I'd be interested in more stages if you ever find time to revisit this.

meganepark 2015-04-20 22:55

Very cool, I enjoyed it! Nice work! (^∇^)ノ♪

philstrahl 2015-04-21 00:28

Ah, alright. Thx for clearing that up :)

maunovaha 2015-04-21 18:54

Cool game and nice graphics. The main character is though someone I have met before. hmm.. :P

monkeedude1212 2015-04-21 19:30

Reminds me of Lolo a bit. Cool art and graphics!

pix3m 2015-04-21 19:32

Assembly? You are an amazingly brave game jammer. Shame there's not much to see here though

mpath 2015-04-22 02:47

I don't see the link with the theme.

oranebeast 2015-04-22 04:23

I would have accepted it as it is as a normal desktop game; But the NES version hits me in the nolstagia. Awesome innovation.

ericjohne 2015-04-24 05:12

Really dig this gameplay

fabraz 2015-04-30 19:12

Wow, unexpected but kind of hilariously genius. A nes game on LD. I've seen it all.

chocobyte 2015-05-09 16:06

This is awesome! Great work!

qualitycatgames 2016-08-21 05:03

just that you'd even ATTEMPT an LD using Assembly, I must respect you for that...

I might check your game out later.
gl with LD 36!
