Well it breaks my personal rule number one of game by not having any explanation at all. Not very much content and I really want to rate this lower, but cannot justify it.

The appropriate categories of not fun and no music are marked while it does have decent innovation, theme, and graphics. And the joke at the end did make me laugh pretty hard.

I totally didn't see that coming, though the clues were all there

I won't give any spoilers but that was pretty funny :) Would like to have seen your game in Scala though (I do some Scala development myself)

johanar 2011-08-23 05:33

Thanks for your comments! Hoping for high points on theme and maybe some humor. I regret not recording any sound effects, but it was in the middle of the night and I didn't want to wake my wife up by making monkey sounds :)

Maybe next compo I'll get something done in Scala. I know a bit of Haskell and Erlang, though I'm not taking advantage of functional programming in Scala, just using it like an improved version of Java

cornedor 2011-08-23 06:37

isnt working for me :(

maxx 2011-08-23 07:22

Doesn't work.. a shame

johanar 2011-08-23 08:12

cornedor & maxx : what OS are you using? If you start it from a text prompt (cmd, terminal, etc depending on platform), do you get an error message?

java -Djava.library.path=binlib -jar Escape.jar

is the command, otherwise it will complain about missing lwjgl. If you just try to start the JAR you won't see the error though. And I haven't tried the .bat file, I just assumed that's how they work :D

Haha, that was great! Nice little puzzle. ^^

4*

n0_named_guy 2011-08-23 18:39

Can't make it run on Linux =(

johanar 2011-08-24 09:46

Seems to be some issue with Java 7 :( Will continue looking at it when time permits

Haha! Not very big on gameplay but both versions are pretty freaking awesome considering how much time was put in them. Love the artwork and especially the animation on the gorilla in the deluxe version.

Funny stuff.

Shadow 2011-08-28 16:46

lovely humor. A nice entry for the little time you had. The way to escape made me laugh, lol.

chaoslab 2011-08-30 19:53

Well I never did escape!

But well I like weird, I like "I don't get this". This is abstract enough for me to play and have some kind of reaction too. I can see its unfinished but well isn't that the point of the 48?

It's never gonna be finished you just put a lid on it!

Technically I could see the game mechanics worked with background and foreground, smooth frame rate, etc...

Source code as well so thanks Johan!

:-)

Chaoslab, have a look at the post-mortem (link next to downloads) for a walk-through :)

I spent a few extra hours with the deluxe version, but I don't think I'm ever going to properly finish this. Basically I threw this together because I didn't have time enough to write what I wanted to, and I don't think the end result would be worth the effort.

rudy 2011-09-04 08:37

Quite expected pun, not too originally done though. Some pre-"escape" gameplay would be nice. I know explaining controls might spoil it, but the problem with not explaining them is that this game features a different control scheme than anticipated. This does not look like platformer/FPS/RTS or something you would immediately recognize and use controls intuitively.

P.S. Would work better if you couldn't exit with close button and this was full-screen.
