I don't think it's much for the theme, more like dodging the theme, but I liked it, with one big big caveat - I was almost totally incapable of drawing the minims. Without fail, it took me 3-8 tries each time to make one. Something about how the circles are(n't) recognized. And it always came out a little different than what I was trying, so after the first 2 levels, I just couldn't succeed at all. I'm a lefty, with shaky hands, and I failed the "draw a straight line" skill in elementary school, but I still stand ready to blame the recognition!
The most amazingly impressive thing with this game is the fully animated tutorial. The whole thing is really really complete and solid.
Inability to draw perfect circles with a mouse = inability to play the game. Loved the idea though and would like to see a more lenient version sometime.
Too hard
I tried to draw the minims for - without lying - about a hundred times, with zero success ratio.
Decent idea I guess, but I for the life of me can't draw those minims. The game is too finicky. The tutorial was cool, but "wait for instructions"? You're going to waste 30 seconds of my time before you tell me how to play? After watching the tutorial I of course realised that you can start the tutoial immediately by pressing S, but why wasn't that right there on the title screen?
The controls are too unforgiving. It seems you have to make a perfect circle just right, so there isn't a lot of leeway. While I can see it being difficult to do under the stress of a time limit, it is also too difficult to do it even once you figure out how to do it.
Otherwise, I had fun. It was an innovative game.
I made five of those circle things in a few hundred attempts, none of them were in the right place so I didn't pass level 1. I do like the idea, but the controls are too hard.
I think you tie with another game for most frustrating entry, mostly because I really love the idea, .. damn you, minims! Hope you do a post-compo build with more friendly recognition.
Never got a single minim to work... I feel like you couldn't have tested this at all or are the most talented circle-drawer of all time... Why is it so hard? Why doesn't it just check for a closed polygon and a line? You could even just keep track of if/where you crossed while you drew one line, and that is the loop.
I also haven't managed to draw a single minim. From the demo, the game seemed very complete though, and I loved the style of the graphics and sound.
I was finally able to figure out the drawing bit after about 10 minutes. I'm maybe at 60-70% accuracy now. The big problem now is aiming, larger targets might help, and being able to delete minims. Definitely having a little more leniency would be good, obviously it's pretty good at guessing as you've displayed the cross. Hope to see more in the future.
Tried using a mouse: too hard to draw minims. Flipped the screen around on the tablet pc: still too hard to draw minims...
I like the concept though and the minim joke. The graphics and instructions had great style and polish.
Well, I didn't seem to have too much trouble drawing the minims and I actually found your detection to be pretty straitforward. You are providing feedback by drawing the expected staff and cross so I was able to use that to draw the stick and circle. Not sure what is going on for most of the other commenters as I was drawing some REALLY ugly circles that it was happily recognizing. Hmmm, weird! Anyway, as far as the game goes, it did hold my interest for awhile. I eventually got frustrated by things that I believe you could easily tweak. Like someone else mentioned, allowing minim deletion would be a big plus! Nice work and bizarre game idea!
What the hell? Why don't you just call them "balls"?
I actually love the idea of shape recognition and drawing games (I played using my tablet), but this is pissing me off a bit :)
So very hard, and the sounds are really eating away at my nerves. Why does the clock panic sound go off like one second before time's up? It's just penalizing.
Instruction sequence was very elaborate, bordering on long-winded. General presentation is pretty good (disregarding sounds).
Mainly though, I spent the majority of my playing time redrawing the same shape 50 times without even knowing if it would be at the right angle to bounce my "balls" into the exit. Not fun, sorry.
(the last drop was when I finally did get the right angle down on the second level and the damn balls wouldn't register a hit on the exit even though they clearly overlapped by several pixels when going through, grr)
Hard, but rewarding. Still would like it to be a little more forgiving. I ended up using my Wacom tablet rather than the mouse to draw minims, and *finally* got the hang of it. Nice sounds. Extra points for using Workrave (I should have done that) and dead novelty language like Perl :)
Drawing was much too difficult to make it enjoyable, maybe just drawing simple lines would've been nicer. A cool idea though and when you finally get something drawn it works well.
i tried really hard to get those "lines" drawn. i could only get 1 out of 10 attempts.
