Apr 15 15:39:06 Hardcore High School ♥ 1 Good thing we had someone hardcore enough to hardcare about the cats until the end. RIP king. As always, the more insane the plot, the better with your games! I'm glad to see the voices in the game, and the trailing monologue after the text box is finished writing is always a treat. Truly, the ohio-core school battling game of the ages. Here's my full playthrough: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_I1-_9rSJRA
Apr 15 16:12:10 33m 04s Brew Some Unique & Appetizing Potions! ♥ 1 An absolute joy. I'm a huge fan of stacking and matching games like tetris or Dr. Mario, and this is right up there. It has the perfect curve of "incredibly easy to learn, incredibly difficult to master" that I LOVE! Here's me playing the game. Best score is 7807. Great game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8gckPFHZtI
Apr 15 16:20:11 8m 01s The Wheel ♥ 1 Not so much a game as just one mechanic with dialogue. The wheel going to the opposite side when it rolled off screen was a nice touch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obVGkdl2Ci4
Apr 15 16:42:20 22m 09s Phoenix Delay ♥ 1 The music is an absolute bop! I really enjoyed the windy particle effects. I tried speedrunning the game a few times, though the ending portal was showing up inconsistently? I don't know if there's something in the code going wrong, but in my last attempt the portal showed up after a minute of empty level. Anyway, this was lots of fun. Great game! Here's my full recorded play session. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJf9E3GUerA
Apr 15 17:08:52 26m 32s daydream ♥ 4 Great work with the story writing. Very emotional, and meaningful. I know last Ludum Dare you were asking for as much feedback as possible, and I'll happily provide that again. Let's begin with the critical feedback. - The enemies that can turn invisible act as invisible walls, which was more confusing than anything, leading me to assume there was jank wall collision. - The spinning eyeball laser felt "cheap". It didn't defeat me, but it brought me down from full health to half a heart, which was... stressful to say the least. I don't believe there was any way to dodge that? There could definitely be some better indication of what's going on there. - The second boss had a very large hitbox, which makes sense as it has a large sprite, but In top down games like this, I usually make the hitbox only extend to where the shadow is. Being hurt by the tall graphics when I assumed the game had some depth, allowing me to run around or behind it... that caught me by surprise. - The sword arc is a bit interesting. Perhaps making it swap from your left to your right with each swing could help? I found myself needing to rotate the character to hit guys on my right, while I could hit guys on my left while looking directly forwards. It's easy to follow how the sword arc works, but it's weirdly lopsided by only hitting things on your left/ahead of you. Either that, or what NES Zelda does where the sword is only directly ahead of you. Now for the good stuff. - The mood. Ohhh wow the feels. You said in the discord that this game was very personal, and it shows. I'm glad you were able to make this story. - The art outside the dungeon is very cute and relaxing. - The art inside the dungeon is very readable. (though I did mistake the walls for a carpet in one of the first rooms. It doesn't help that the ghosts can go through them) - I don't know if it was intentional, but hitting a jar twice before it despawns can yield an extra heart, which was very helpful at times. - The bosses were unique and made the end of the dungeons very interesting. All around, great work! Here's my recorded gameplay for further feedback. Cheers! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4WxvOHmemY
Apr 15 17:24:41 15m 49s Summon Shuffleboard ♥ 2 I can really see this being expanded into that rogue like you envisioned. The character art is delightful as always, and the various patterns on the board (and in the background) are so stylish, I'm actually jealous. The little arcs appearing around the pucks in the right place? I really admire the amount of polish you put into the game's visuals. I recorded myself playing to provide extra feedback. Great work, cheers! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDvUVktL9EE
Apr 15 18:06:54 42m 13s Tiny Summons ♥ 1 The wobbly animations are fantastic! Making a game played via twitch commands is also super cool and unique! I kinda wish the music would swap between "team forming music" and "battle music". It gets a bit repetitive as it stays on the same track the whole time. My strategy is a bullfrog and 6 bears, because if they can get some bees between them and the foes the bees keep spawning and become unstoppable. Or maybe 10 hedgehogs... I will say, the 90 second wait between rounds can get a bit boring, and since the gameplay is entirely in the team setup stage, (watching the match unfold has no inputs, so there's no skill to it) it's especially uninteresting when nobody else is in chat. The fights are fun to watch, but the 90 second wait kills the momentum. It would be cool if every few rounds had some random modifier, like "+50 team points!", "Everything throws rocks", "Both teams get one free Dragon", "Frogs are half price!", or "Both teams collaborate to defeat the boss!". Something to spice it up, you know? I found myself quickly wishing the game had more to offer. Anyway, with all that critical feedback out of the way, I do want to say that the artwork is fantastic as always. The design of the unicorn and bullfrog is great (all the characters for that matter). I love large guys with tiny faces. The little extra motions on the "cards" and text in the team forming screen is a great way to make the team forming screen look extra polished.
Apr 15 18:35:42 28m 48s Whip it up! ♥ 6 A nice and relaxing cooking sim! I like the goofy names of the dishes I prepared, and the artwork for everything is so well done! The music is relaxing, and the minigames are fun. (I wish the chopping minigame had the same Beats per minute as the music!) I recorded myself playing to provide as much feedback as possible. Cheers! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EvLEvS16RU
Apr 15 18:49:19 13m 37s Where is my hat, dudes? ♥ 2 This feels like it would make for a great 2 player experience. I was stuck playing against the AI, which was... in need of improvement. The artwork is delightful, and I love how many different designs there are for the characters you play as. The background audio was a bit ominous and distracting though. Cool game! I recorded myself playing to provide extra feedback. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_W777MP22-A
Apr 15 19:32:19 43m 00s Dry Season ♥ 6 Okay, wow this absolutely broke my brain. For some reason the QWER keys being in a vertical orientation on screen is destroying me. Thats it, that's the only note I have. anyway... Full cleared the entertainer. Let's gooooooo! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lovQhrCQcFI
Apr 15 19:44:19 12m 00s Summon Cats ♥ 5 Absolutely adorable game! Here's a video of me playing it to provide some feedback: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LaSs1hBQRTU
Apr 15 20:17:09 32m 50s The Basis of All Creations ♥ 2 Very cool game! I enjoyed the puzzle solving, and finding ways to mass produce various "ingredients". I recorded a video of myself playing to provide extra feedback. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeDfSOmftCQ
Apr 16 16:32:29 20h 15m BlĂ„kulla ♥ 6 One of the best games this jam. The background artwork is stunning (I love the rain), the character designs are great, the card artwork, enemy designs, ah! The ONLY complaint is sometimes I make the shape that I believe to spawn something, and it doesn't spawn it. I have no idea how difficult it is on the backend to make a game like this even work, needing to parse out my jank scribbles as a specific glyph sounds incredibly difficult, though if it doesn't spawn due to cooldown, it should absolutely make a little "Cooldown!" message over my dude's head. Then perhaps if the drawing was too jank, a "?" over my guy. The spells sometimes not working is my only criticism, and I can't say it's that harsh of one considering how difficult of a system that must be to implement. Bravo for making it work! Here's my recording for extra feedback. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gD2C3fAtA8w
Apr 16 17:16:51 44m 22s Mystery in Greensand Shore ♥ 4 The combat was really unique, and I enjoyed the problem solving in trying to survive. Perhaps I'm missing something, or maybe the post-jam-brain is numbing my critical thinking skills, but I reached a section where there were 3 available fights, and I was unable to come close to beating any of them. Even still, it was fun to figure out the strategies to get as close as possible, but I was certified 100% stumped, and decided to give up. I have the entire session recorded, so hopefully you'll be able to see what I was doing wrong. This is definitely the most important feedback I could provide here, and I want to make sure this isn't coming off in a negative "game is bad" light. The game is great, I'm just not great at it. In other areas, the music slaps (though after failing a battle, there was some bugs in the music engine), the writing is delightful, and the artwork is amazing as always. It's a treat every time to play your games, and I'm wishing this game the best of luck in the play and rate. Here's the recording. Hopefully it highlights the knowledge gap I had, and what your team can do to fix it. Cheers! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHq4jCW0cqE
Apr 16 18:11:54 55m 03s Honse ♥ 4 Ahhhh man. is it even possible to win Honse? I did a good job with the chores, but as soon as I unlocked the castle upgrade 2, Honse was unsustainable. Anyway, this was fun! I recorded myself playing for extra feedback! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQt-iVsdXfE
Apr 17 15:22:59 21h 11m Chill! ♥ 1 I love seeing your games being more and more ambitious. From what I read in your initial version of this page, it sounds like you spent a ton of time implementing the websocket multiplayer stuff that ultimately was left unimplemented. I've yet to try and make a multiplayer game myself, so I will absolutely applaud you for taking that on during a game jam. In addition to that, the destructible terrain, 3d models with animations, and really cool skyboxes show that there was genuine effort spent making this. There's a lot of attention to detail! You have the start of a fun party game here. Keep it up! Here's my recorded session for more feedback. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nivX7M22fWs
Apr 17 16:17:22 54m 23s Butler! Summon the Imps! ♥ 4 What's there to say? The art is amazing, the music is amazing, I loved the story, and the gameplay was fun. I really like how the tutorial level shows you where the objects will land. It's great for introducing the players to the game! I'm sure I have actual feedback to give, but it currently escapes me, so here's my recorded gameplay session. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdxwPVC_lcg
Apr 17 16:39:36 22m 14s Ghost Link ♥ 4 Great humor! I loved the occasional references I was able to pick up on! Here's my recorded gameplay session for extra feedback. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxr3r7G-2pc
Apr 18 16:17:50 23h 38m Voir Dire ♥ 5 Akin to all good rogue likes, the ability to exploit the heck out of a single item makes this game 10 times more fun. I present to you, the ultimate jury: temp_crop.png Great work, good story, and I found the mickey level exceptionally funny. (Darn Disney lawyers packing the jury!)
Apr 18 17:12:52 55m 02s SUMMONING ♥ 1 Lots of feedback to provide: First off, the critical stuff. - I don't know if it was the web build's doing, but the music's audio quality was rough. Once the music was fairly loud, It sounded like it was playing at a low sample rate. The actual notes and whatnot sound good, like- the melody is providing the perfect eerie atmosphere, though something sounded off about the audio playback. - I never found the "wait in this circle for 10 seconds" stuff to be all that useful. Unless you have the shockwave spell, it's a waste of health to just stand there, and the rewards for it didn't seem nearly as grandiose as I had hoped. - The name of the game just being the theme verbatim feels pretty lazy. Hence why there are 7 other games this Ludum Dare with the same name as your entry. - The enemies all stack on top of each other. To some extent, I would have them push each other away in order to form a more menacing crowd. Having them stack on each other makes them too easy to avoid, or combo off. temp_small.png - One final note on the critical feedback, I was swiftly finding myself wanting more variety. I recognize the scope of a 48 hour game jam while working alone, though having different "weak enemies" to spice things up would go a long way. This ties in with my "all the enemies stack on each other" comment, since having enemy variety would avoid creating one singular mass of enemies. (I appreciate the occasional blue enemy, though one trick to add some free visual differences is to multiple the enemy color's brightness by a random values between, let's say 0.75 and 1. It gives some random tint to each enemy, and looks nicer than all of them being the exact same color) - More spell variety would be nice too, or at least more frequent upgrades providing the interesting choices. Far too often it was just Hp/Speed/Damage, when the ones unlocking new attacks are the ones you really want the players to experience and play around with. Moving to the positive comments so I can just gush. - Wow, that opening cutscene was cool! - The fog rolling in as the game gets closer to the end is a really well made effect. - It's fun! - The floaty candles are super cool, and I love the aesthetic you have going on. - I like the sound effects. It's very satisfying to *hear* the combos happening. - The online leaderboard is sick, and now I need to figure out how to add a speedrun leaderboard to my own games. Solid entry! Great work.
Apr 18 17:41:16 28m 24s Duck Spawner ♥ 1 Cute little game. I wish the music's loop was a bit more seamless.
May 3 19:04:49 361h 23m Seance ♥ 3 Wow, I can't believe I waited so long to play this. What an incredible story. The voice acting, the artwork, WOW. First things first, the critical feedback. This game is such a masterpiece, that I only have the minor-est of nitpicks. The game automatically closed instead of going to a "GG, close the game now" kinda menu, so I briefly recorded my messy Desktop at the end of my video. I also usually like to start replaying a game while I can provide some more feedback, but that would require restarting the application, and I already panic-ended the recording because my messy desktop. I also think the shots of my character was a little... poorly framed? For a second, I thought the detective guy was the one striking a dramatic "OH NO!" pose, only to realize a few lines later that it was actually me. (I incorrectly assumed for a minute that I was the killer) Also a few things in the timeline seem to be a bit conflicting? At least I assumed the timeline was, thief takes pig/sheep, kills butcher, kills aria, kidnaps dylan, kills tamsin, loud bang, fragrance. Which conflicts with the butcher smelling the fragrance. Anyway, that's all the criticism I have. This game was amazing. I recorded myself playing to provide some extra feedback. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XN7fbol7gdo
May 5 16:02:07 44h 57m Some Munnings ♥ 3 Sometimes the most brilliant take on the theme goes over the heads of people. Congrats on the humor victory, it was well deserved!
