LD39 — Running out of Power

CHAINED by Mr. Chelnoque 2017-08-03T21:24:04Z

This game is incredible. Everything comes together to make a really creepy and dangerous ambiance. It made me feel both powerful and powerless and even a bit angry (in a good way). I like how the tutorial not only explained the game, but also enhanced the story and atmosphere. I expected some kind of payoff after all four chains were broken, but I guess that wouldn't make much sense, since it's an arcade game. This is a fantastic game with an interesting concept. Great work!

Running from Power by dirkinz 2017-08-03T22:46:58Z

Funny play on words of the theme and some interesting mechanics. I would have liked to see more kinds of obstacles for the player to both get trapped by and use to his advantage. It ended up feeling a bit hopeless once the guard was close enough. Regardless, this is a simple and fun game, keep up the great work!

Interesting interpretation of the theme and a very comical story! The motion blur and the monotonous walls definitely fit the feel of a powerless mouse. Unfortunately, I found the gameplay a little lacking. You can clip through most of the walls and I couldn't make it past the 2nd yellow zone. I think that with some more time, you could definitely turn this into something really fun and humorous! Keep up the good work!

THUNDER RUNNER by NOFUEL 2017-08-03T19:41:31Z

This is a really fun game! The graphics are really nice, and the color choice is on point. I like how the music ramps up, and the sound effects fit right in. The jump and dash feel nearly perfect, and I found myself spamming the keys for fun. I think it would make more sense to map the jump to D, but that's just personal preference. The power meter forces you to interact with the environment and make quick decisions, but apart from rainbow mode, I didn't find myself paying much attention to it. The collision boxes are nice and forgiving, but the squashing animation of the clouds does distract a bit. These are just picky details though, and you have a really great game here. Keep up the good work!

My highscore is 1113.

Say Hello by Pedrowzee 2017-08-04T01:10:30Z

This game is so charming and relatable! The art, music, and sound effects are cheerful and bring back a taste of childhood. It's really awesome that you could throw in so many little details in just 72 hours; they really give the game life and make you explore the house to try to find things to do. As much as I love the dog, (s)he's really gotta stop moving. It seems like you had plans for more content, and I think that's exactly what the game needs. Really well done, this is a fantastic game. Keep up the good work!

I could stare at the ending splashscreen while listening to this awesome music for a looong time. Awesome aesthetic to match such a cute story! If the payoff for finishing each level was a unique splashscreen as cool as this one, I would play every level without a doubt. We need more!

@logicon211 I completely understand the confusion with the ending. It was sort of thrown together in the eleventh hour (figuratively, of course) and we left some of the story unexplained. It is relieving to know, however, that you finished the game ;) Thanks for the feedback!

A lot of you have been running into problems with our Flash release; thank you to those who brought it to our attention. We've released a Windows build so that more people can enjoy our game (as per the suggestion of @mr-chelnoque). Unfortunately there are a few bugs in this version, including a visual glitch and a laggy ending, so please try the Flash version first. It is still functional, and for those willing to try, the Windows build will be there.

Thank you for your kind words and constructive criticism!

Imperium by Studio 310 2017-08-03T20:51:24Z

The graphics, names, sound effects, and ending make this game really comical, and it's fun to see a game that doesn't take itself so seriously. After a few failed attempts at trying to play the game strategically, I learned that my opponents couldn't handle the old stab spam. It's incredibly easy to make a fighting game unbalanced, especially in 72h, but it might be worth studying how fighting games with dozens of characters manage to stay competitive. These games are often compared to Rock Paper Scissors, and if RPS can make do with three options, I think you can make a really interesting game with five, even without special moves or combos.

Anyways, the game looks and plays great. Making the opponent an AI rather than local multiplayer is a brave choice, and I think you pulled it off well. Keep up the good work!

Dissipate by DeinVenteD 2017-08-03T21:47:46Z

This is a very cool idea for a game! I love how the art simply serves the main idea, and the music is perfect for a puzzle game. My main complaint is that the characters have square collision and circular sprites, but I understand that many engines are restricted to rectangular collision and that the circular sprites were chosen for a good reason. Overall, this game is very unique and charming. Great work!

The Last Question by Terribly Awesome Games 2017-08-04T11:49:16Z

This is a really unique and thought-provoking experience. The anagrams do so much to enhance the story, but I feel like they might be too difficult for somebody who hasn't read the short story (especially the last one), which could break up the chapters too much. I also noticed that you cut out some of the dialogue and all of the exposition. Again, this may be confusing to somebody not familiar with the short story. Overall, this is an awesome adaptation of Asimov, unlike anything I've seen before. The art and music fit perfectly, and the story was told really well. Great job!

Power Loss by Pixel Programmer 2017-08-03T04:02:45Z

I really like your game! The art was visually appealing, the levels and enemies were designed well, and the controls were tight. I have to agree with @superpokeunicorn that game feel goes a long way with this kind of game, and your bullet particles are a really good example of such. Also, the lack of music really does hurt the experience. It's clear from the quality of your game, however, that you're very talented at the aspects you did tackle. This game is really fun, and I need more levels! Great job, keep it up.

Deliverer by bunrun11 2017-08-01T22:43:12Z

The constant alternating between tension and relief makes this game really addicting. Testing and polishing a game under a time crunch is definitely tough, but what you got done with the physics and graphics is the start of a really great game. My high score is a whopping 2, let's see if any fellow jammers can beat that. Keep up the good work!

Watt Runner by Liam C. Dawson 2017-08-02T14:03:29Z

You're not kidding; this game is hard! I really like where you took the theme, and your music and graphics are really great at capturing the feeling of playing against a dying handheld. Keep up the good work!

Strategy games typically have many resources and complex structures. I really like how you've removed this complexity to make a simple and elegant game solely about power. Very clean UI, easy controls, no major bugs, and a very well-balanced game area. This is a really great game, especially for a jam. Can't wait to see more!

Prepare to Dive! by encinas.g 2017-08-02T22:09:52Z

For a first game, this is quite the accomplishment! The graphics and the physics are very well polished. I have to agree with @dreadloaf that there should be more emphasis placed on the bar, but it serves its purpose just fine either way. You might also want to think about whether you want your game to depend on memorizing the level or something else. Regardless, you have a very visually impressive and engaging game. Keep it up!

Finally Done! by HamFist 2017-08-02T22:17:42Z

I'd love to play the game, but it looks like it links to a 404. :(

PotatIO by Ash Duong 2017-08-03T03:39:05Z

I really like the graphics and the sound design! It creates a very relaxing vibe, perfect for potato farming. There are a few quirks, which have been mentioned, but one thing in particular stuck out to me. After retrying a couple times in order to learn the mechanics, the game quickly ceases to be about resource management, and turns into an idle game (when you get the lemon battery). I don't think there's anything wrong with this; the atmosphere is perfect for the genre. This might, however, be off-putting to some players. Regardless, the humorous story, clean graphics, and lovely sound design makes this a very enjoyable game. Keep up the great work!
