LD47 — Stuck in a loop

The Pongs by schizoid2k 2020-10-05T19:03:19Z

I like that the game has a simple and intuitive concept, that it places the user first by adjusting to how hard the user wants it to be, and that you can play it directly in your browser. I think the background tune is brilliant and the sound you get on completion made me chuckle. Overall a great, if simple, game.

HomePick, A Pet Text Adventure by Instafluff 2020-10-05T22:52:26Z

I like how the game takes a simple concept and makes an aesthetically pleasing experience out of it. I can't think of a single interface design choice I didn't enjoy: the choice of fonts and colours, the fact that text appears at varying positions, the background music, the way the buttons look and disappear/reappear etc. However, I don't really know what I have to do in order to advance. Even after more than a dozen attempts, I still haven't been adopted, and it seems like the visitors' reactions are a bit arbitrary. With your interface, I would gladly play your game for hours, if only it was easier to "win" (or if the game had no concept of winning at all).

Tower of Time by CodeRaurus 2020-10-07T21:12:05Z

Excellent game -- simple and intuitive concept, great artwork, and nice sound effects. I for one would have preferred if the buttons gave you a discrete speed value instead of this "floaty" acceleration behaviour, but that seems to be a question of personal taste (and perhaps the game would have been too easy then). The features I liked the most were the progress bar (as has been mentioned once) and the fact that you've included an explanation of the controls in the game so that we don't have to read anything before playing. I especially like the colour coding in the controls explanation screen, which I think is a clever idea, and the fact that you only refer to that screen instead of explaining the controls in multiple places.

Dungeon Grid by walpolea 2020-10-05T23:31:12Z

I enjoyed playing this game, the graphics remind me of Conway's Game of Life. However, it's hard to figure out how the game works at first. I would have enjoyed having a table that explains what the different colours mean and maybe some kind of explanation on what exactly the arrow keys do (I suppose they turn the player beins' direction by 1/16 of a circle) -- but maybe you intended figuring out how to play on your own to be part of the experience.

@morrilet Thanks for your comment! To clear up the confusion a bit, hopefully (spoilers!): There are four endings where 3 of the 4 NPC's vanish. When you talk to the remaining NPC, the NPC will say a few lines (press X multiple times) and the world will change. Once the NPC has finished explaining, the X key is disabled and the only thing you can still do is walk around in that "new world". The fifth ending (which I believe is what you got) is different: If the NPC's are unhappy with your answers (i.e. too many indifferent/indecisive answers), each one will tell you that once in an unfriendly way before permanently vanishing when you walk around the corner. After all 4 NPC's have vanished, the only thing you can still do is -- again -- walk around, but this time in the original world. So in all five endings, you remain stuck in some kind of loop, so to speak!

And now that I've posted our first self-comment, I would like to explicitly add that @dranjohn and I read and appreciate every single comment, even if we don't answer, and that we will continue to do so. We're extremely happy and grateful for all the feedback we've received. Many thanks to all of you!

Excellent game. Great artwork, great music, and an original idea. I especially enjoyed the macabre animation for when you kill people.

Death is in the Air by Banholio 2020-10-18T18:41:51Z

It's a nice game for a first submission! Most of what I liked and what I would have done differently has already been mentioned, but I also noticed that the score keeps increasing after you have died (at least when I played it). Perhaps it would have been better to freeze it so that you can see exactly how far you got.

Loop Race by Loiuy123 2020-10-05T19:33:01Z

When I read "racing game", I expected a fun and fast game like Mario Kart. Instead, even trying to steer my vehicle required a steady hand, and -- as you point out in your description -- the game turned out to be a real test of patience as I progressed. The only thing that helped me keep my temper was the great tune. As a single downside, resetting the player to the beginning of a level after hitting a red block seemed a bit too hard for my taste.

Cursed Temple by Neragoth 2020-10-05T23:47:34Z

Excellent game. Most of what I enjoyed has already been mentioned, but I would like to add that I think it's great that you included a tutorial so that one can start playing right away without having to read any instructions.
