LD18 — Enemies as Weapons

Atop Mt. Brawlalot by eli 2010-08-23T16:36:00

The sound makes this game. The constant mumbling of the random brawlers and the voice actor's apathetic performance of the protagonist are hilarious.

The concept is good too.

AClockWorkLemon already mentioned the controls, so I'll just say that having a way to perform a zelda-style 360 degree slash would have been a lot of fun, if only to see baddies go flying everywhere. :-)

Wow. I've never played a 48 hour metroidvania before, but that was good.

The only frustration I ran into was with the running jump mechanic; sometimes I'd make a jump and sometimes I wouldn't. I was stuck for a while until I realized that (a) running jumps made you go higher and (b) I could also hold down the jump button longer to drift a little higher still.

Good concept, excellent execution.

The soldiers annoyed me until I realized that they could be used to shoot at the invader. I also wasn't quite sure what to do with the little square guys, but that didn't take long.

I liked the subtle hint at the instruction screen that the goal was to push the invader off the top. It may have been slightly too subtle, though.

One niggle is that the gameplay seems to encourage you to pick either the top or bottom level and stick with it for extended periods of time. If you neglect a level, it's very hard to retake it from the inevitable hordes of enemies. Early game, the bottom level is preferable because the hard-to-deal-with soldiers tend to stick to the top level. Late game, the bottom seems to get swarmed, and it's easier to stay on the top level and use the soldiers to shoot at the invader.

Yeah, I didn't actually everything working to the point of playability until the last hour or so. I'll hack on a slightly more polished post-compo version soon.

I didn't notice that there was a separate source code category; I'll break up the download accordingly.

Alien Parasite by itzmattu 2010-08-23T16:48:00

Hey, it's like Paradroid! :-)

Perhaps some sort of timed maze sequence would have helped make it feel more gameish.

I'm sympathetic to a fellow Linux fan, but you should really at least say that you're using SFML in the readme. :-)

Strange. But fun.

Sometimes my smiling zombie horde would desert me for no apparent reason. It also wasn't clear when your blood vomit attack would recharge.

After about five minutes, there were just too many evil incoming zombies for me to keep up.

Mines and Bobbleheads by rale 2010-08-23T16:42:00

Simple, but fun. It's a little hard getting started, but I was really getting into the swing of things by level 3. Level 7 was just too hard for me to get past, though.

I didn't realize just how fantastic the graphics were until I'd taken a break from slinging things around, but they do look really good. Lots of subtle effects.

I'll award humor points for the concept of "saving" your "friends" by slinging mines into them until they explode. :-)

Not bad. It was somewhat easy and slow paced; the difficulty didn't seem to increase very much.
