Hey, great job & I'm glad you kept on going. This plays very smoothly and has a great look. Well done!

zillix 2010-08-23 09:44

I'm sad that I can't play it! Once I get to the title screen, I push enter and it displays the screen showed in your screenshot, which immediately fades to a full black screen.

meep 2010-08-23 10:27

I really enjoyed this. Simple yet appealing game. I found the snake whip really amusing. =P

razzberries 2010-08-23 12:22

@Zillix: Did any error messages pop up? That doesn't sound exactly like a surface issue ... I'll start looking at it. Did you skip the intro or watch it all the way through?

zillix 2010-08-23 14:42

There weren't any visible error messages. The way I described, I had skipped the intro. If I watch the intro, it quickly shows what I think is the title screen without the words yet, and then fades to black.

timgarbos 2010-08-23 14:44

Some problem as Zillix. Doesn't help not to skip the intro.

razzberries 2010-08-23 15:27

That is really weird. I'm trying to replicate it, but I can't. I don't know if it's a surface drawing error or not, but it could be ... the thing is, if it were, the game itself shouldn't work at all because the viewports themselves are scaled via surfaces. Hm, strange.

Wow. I've never played a 48 hour metroidvania before, but that was good.

The only frustration I ran into was with the running jump mechanic; sometimes I'd make a jump and sometimes I wouldn't. I was stuck for a while until I realized that (a) running jumps made you go higher and (b) I could also hold down the jump button longer to drift a little higher still.

razzberries 2010-08-23 23:58

Yeah run-jumping definitely needed some work, I think it was a combination of the run-speed and the jump height that made it so tedious. If I ever update this game I'll probably make the player jump a tiny bit higher so the harder jumps aren't as annoying. The thing about making the run speed slower is that the player is only 4 pixels wide, so when he's running he is moving 2 pixels every step event. Making him move 1.5 pixels every step would look kinda weird. Thanks for the feedback, by the way, I appreciate it :D

I got it to work on an older computer. I really like these types of games, and it was just the perfect length. Well done.

Wow, this was awesome! Huge game world with lots to do. Lots of variety to the graphics (even if they weren't very detailed). The jumping was a bit annoying at times, but otherwise the controls were good.

Would have been even better with some music and better sound effects and also a cutscene or something explaining the goal of the game, but I guess you would have a hard time fitting all that into 48 hours.

spooner 2010-08-26 07:13

Really interesting little game, that looked like it had a lot of content (if only I was better at jumping :)). Intro and general style helped greatly.

Not sure that a snake-whip really counted as good use of "enemies as weapons" though.

excitemike 2010-08-26 19:57

Very nice! Had a lot to it for only a 48hr game! Main things that grabbed me as needing improvement were the jumping being perhaps overly difficult and the final boss didn't flash or anything when I hit him, so I was afraid that I had missed some important upgrade.

jdruid 2010-08-27 08:51

Downright sadistic gameplay.

razzberries 2010-08-28 16:21

Thanks for the feedback guys, I plan to update the game once the competition ends, so I really appreciate the criticism :)

@Spooner: Yeah, the whole "Get enemies in chests" thing kinda popped into my mind one night. I wasn't to fond of it either, now that I think about it.

@ExcitedMike: I was actually really worried about that, that's one thing I plan to fix when I update.

@JDruid: That's my style ;)

goffmog 2010-09-07 06:25

I have the same problem as Zillix, but unfortunately no old PC to try it on :( Could the problem be that you're using an old version of GM? My 3D card is bang up to date and does everything I could ever want it to do besides make coffee.

This need Walkthrough.
