LD38 — A Small World

Marco Polo by Nathan 2017-05-01T21:00:31Z

The art is fairly basic but charming, and after playing for a while I was quite engrossed in the world. The voices, art and music come together nicely to create an eerie mood.

I thought the story bits were well written and entertaining, although I'm not a fan of the font choice. Although the font might fit with the game's theme, it's not that easy to read. Given the amount of text I would definitely choose readability over style.

I found the monster encounters frustrating. It did not feel like you were given a fair amount of time to run. Running in a point and click didn't feel like a natural response - perhaps because you have limited control of your movement speed and direction. I would have preferred another way of evading such as distracting them with an object.

The voice mechanic was an interesting and a nice touch, although I think it might have worked even better in a 3D environment (with directional 3D sound).

Really neat idea! I love the aesthetic you went with. The ragdoll physics work perfectly with the style.

I think the game would benefited a lot from some "retro" sound effects, but perhaps you didn't have time. This could be fun to play multiplayer, although you might have to implement some kind of recharge mechanic to avoid players "spamming" shots.

I enjoyed the world and theme that you put together here.

It was fun to pick out which weapons to upgrade, although I couldn't tell if there was any tactical choices to be made. It didn't seem like any particular weapons were better against specific enemies or enemy loadouts.

I've not played many turned based games but this reminded me a little of South Park Stick of Truth. I think it would be cool to implement a few skill based mechanics, such as releasing a rocket at optimum angle or timing for increases damage or accuracy. At the moment it just feels that you have to rely on luck - but I guess that's due to time constraints as you mentioned in previous comment. :)

Hop Up by PietPtr 2017-05-06T12:28:56Z

I really liked how you animated the world with the spinning/growing objects and rotating camera. It made the game feel "alive".

I think the crazy visual affects are let down a a lot by lack of sound and music. The flashing colours feel a bit odd without some crazy music to accompany them.

A couple of a bugs were a bit frustrating, but can be expected from a Jam game. The ball was "flickering" as it moved which was distracting, and often the ball disappeared off the screen completely which felt unfair.

Generally really fun, although I don't think I could play it for long as after a while the effects can be a bit of an overload!

A World of Death! by tompudding 2017-05-06T12:13:58Z

Great fun! Light-hearted and a bit creepy at the same time. Great use of voice for the sound effects.

Using the umbrella was fun and it was satisfying to "boing" the dolls into the water. I found them really hard to hit once on the boat for some reason - either my aim is bad or the collision detection didn't quite match the umbrella swing animation.

I didn't feel like it matched the theme much, but that doesn't really matter. :) Overall really great.

World Conqueror: Rule the Seas by MCjammydodger 2017-05-02T18:54:29Z

This is an easy to pick up and a fun little game!

Some things that I think would be cool to if you want to take it further: - Some kind of "trail" behind the ship to give a sense of movement. - More enemy variety. Perhaps some enemies firing mortars, rather that all firing "shells"? - Additional weapons/pickups such as mines would be cool.

I like the vibrant cartoony style. I thought the models were well designed and gave a nice hint of civilization without clutter - such as the runway and tower as an airport.

Wow thanks for the awesome video and feedback @larrychupacabra! Some interesting ideas. :) I definitely was a bit constrained by time and only got around to implementing the most basic features.

Polar Conflict by Jaenis 2017-05-01T21:29:08Z

Really nice concept and pretty fun.

I think it would benefit from some visual tweaks to make things clearer. For example: - Enemy ships are exactly the same as yours. It makes it look like a free for all, but in fact it's everyone vs you. It would be nice if enemy ships were a different colour. - A visual indicator of how much damage your ship has taken would be nice. - It might be good if the explosion/damage colour was different to the ships trail so that it stood out a bit more.

That might all be stuff you would have done anyway given more time! Overall I thought it was fun and each part came together nicely to fit the aesthetic. The planet generator is a nice touch :)
