LD29 — Beneath the Surface

ScubaBear by _Rilem 2014-05-06T09:41:00

Hahaha, how is this not more famous? Scubabear, you should be the poster boy (poster bear?) for LD29!

I'm sorry that I don't have anything constructive to add; as it is, the game feels more like a fully polished indie game that should be on Steam instead of a 72 hour jam entry.

Also, from a web dev's perspective: you coded this in HTML5? HARDCORE.

The Valley Rule by Raiyumi 2014-05-06T09:22:00

You created a good Metroidvania-styled exploration game with excellent graphics and a haunting soundtrack in only 72 hours? Holy crap, port this out! I really have nothing more constructive to say because this game is already hitting all the right notes.

Evolve by Overkill 2014-05-06T10:13:00

Sebastian lied - under the sea ain't as magical as he claimed it'd be! But wow, this entry has some of the best visuals I've seen in LD29.

That said, if/when you port this into a full game, may I request a checkpoint system? I love exploring the dangerous depths, but the threat of death and failure's too steep (i.e. reset to zero) for the kind of game that should encourage exploration.

Dig Hard by petey123567 2014-05-06T09:48:00

This game really lives up to both parts of its name - there's digging, and it's goddamn hard! AWESOME.

The bizarre humour of this game is a perfect topping to its fast-paced, explosive, everything-dies gameplay.

Also, I find it hard to articulate exactly why, but I found that the inclusion of gender choice at the start of the game to be a very welcome touch. I'm surprised more games don't make inclusions like that.

Digging up Daisy by Cake&Code 2014-05-06T08:45:00

Hahaha, so that's what's hidden beneath the surface! Can I say that A. the art is the best thing of this game and B. I love the sonar mechanic? The fact it's a risk-reward decision every time I use it is fantastic. This is a great Jam game, but good gravy, the repetition of the music drove me insane, I'm sorry.

Diamond Diggers by chocobyte 2014-05-06T09:52:00

I have to give credit to this game - it's the first one I've seen in LD29 that allows for 2P competitive gameplay. :)

Magma by DMinsky 2014-05-06T08:50:00

Wow, I thought this was just a simple blast'em game with an annoying timing mechanic until I realised the population fluctuated based on the airplanes. There's more depth here than I realised, no pun intended! The music and the graphics really set the mood to this game.

SUPER ROBO GARDEN ARENA by nxT 2014-05-06T08:36:00

Yay, a maze game with combat! :D I love these things. It's a good build for the 48 hour compo, but I hope to see this polished even more. :) My observations: 1. controls could be tighter, and 2. err, I don't see how it relates to "beneath the surface" except for the enemies popping up. Not that the last bit matters if you intend to port this game. :D

Beneath the City by deepnight 2014-05-06T10:06:00

A turn-based puzzle/stealth game with some DNA of the original Thief? This is by far one of the most unique games I've seen for LD29!

I love how your stealth mechanics work, and the whole idea of twisting it into a turn-based puzzle system is truly inspired. Will this be ported into a full game? Please say yes.

Sail by DrPrettyPatty 2014-05-06T09:05:00

I'm getting serious Zelda: Wind Waker vibes from this game, and that's awesome! I love the visuals, I love the environment and, wait, did you put in a "maze island" in there? Hahaha, more please! My only recommendations: 1. the music is too tinny for something so grand and relaxing, and 2. the ability to move the camera would've been a nice bonus. Holy cheese, if you did something this good for a 48 hour compo, what'd you do when you actually have time to port it?

Frack You by Candyhandy 2014-05-06T08:24:00

I like the concept! A pipe-based puzzle system with some environmental effects sounds like something that can be (ahhah) refined into something amazing. I'm especially impressed with the HTML5 coding. :D

Sword and Shovelry by tayl1r 2014-05-06T09:27:00

This is a nice entry; I really dig (hehe) the old Gameboy graphics. :D I think the only thing missing from this game is in-game context and explanation; my experience only got better once I realised that the off-screen arrows were for and the purpose of the shells.
