I will be blunt here. I don't have great experience with it. It did not capture jump scare horror but rather using player's panic as horror is very cheap. Music is great but the voice effect is kinda annoying me. I think it would be the best for the game is not to copying what RE did. Make one or two undefeatable enemies, using resources to trap the enemies or something to give you a slight advantage in escaping. Nails, caltrops, slippery oil or salt, anything is your sky limit.

Thanks for playing and taking the time to write.

Our goal was pretty much to just have fun making a little randomized version of a classic RE game - overbearing dialogue and all. We knew it wouldn't be for everyone. We actually narrowed in on resources and things like that to avoid over complicating it and instead focused on the "Limited Space" side of the theme.

I will say, I feel most people would find jump scare horror to be cheap - making the player panic means that you actually felt something, so I'm happy to hear that!

Had fun playing this game! Really did remind me of the classive RE games even down to the fixed camera angle and tank-like controls. After getting the hang of it, it wasn't too hard to take down the enemies. I just wish the enemies had a bit of wind-up to their attacks, not a lot but their attacks felt instant the moment I got into their attack range compared to the long wind-up on the player's attack. Overall had fun good entry!

I've never played a game with tank controlls so honestly it was kind of frustrating. I think the candle idea was interesting but in practice losing access to my escape route was the least of my difficulties, it was the monsters killing me due to the controls, so it felt kind of like a underutilized mechanic. But the mood was really nice, and I think the graphics fit the tone quite well. The cheesy voice lines by the protag were a nice touch haha

Very cool concept. I like the eerie music and the sound design is spot on.

Like others, I struggled with the controls a little bit. I understand the nostalgic angle, but going with more modern controls (at least for movement) might have been a better user experience.

Also, it's a very good idea to show the controls on the screen on in-game somewhere for jam games.

Overall, I like what you've done with the procedural approach to level design and this feels like it's got real potential!

The fixed camera is pretty funny, but hard

Thanks for playing everyone!

@zee-yuen We understand all frustrations about the controls! (Which we did list under the pause menu, but they were easy to miss there @silas-reinagel )

We knew they would be divisive but for us it's not just about nostalgia. The way you have to watch your character's forward direction, scan the rooms, and reverse away from enemies to avoid them in the nick of time - it's just a unique experience that I want to coexist alongside modern third person shooters. If any part of it interested you, I'd encourage you to go check out the Resident Evil 1 remake (which has an okay modern control scheme option) or any of the classics - I'll be honored to be your introduction.

Ultimately, you like it or you don't - but we're happy you took the time to play and write all the same! We'll be working through your games soon as well.

I should say it was strange but interesting experience, thanks for your game!

I enjoyed this as a big fan of resident evil. I loved the mood in the game and the idea. I believe the game also needed to borrow a little bit more from resident evil the level design and the pathfinding aspect of it (like find a key, backtracking to a previous location to open a previously locked door to explore a new area, etc). The tank controls where fine, but the camera was too jerky and it gave me a little bit of a headache.

Great job overall, I wish more horror games like this were made in the jam

The controls were definitely a little tricky at first though I started to get a handle on it with some time. Overall it was a fun addition! I really liked the RE vibe it gave off too.

As a fan of old school horror games I really liked this one.

A bit tricky to get used to, but pretty fun.

I think I would prefer if the camera didn't follow the player, and was just in a fixed place/direction in each room.

I didn't really understand the use of the candles, since monsters would spawn anyway.

Horror games aren't really my thing, but I found this quite effective. The limited weaponry and lighter fluid, as well as the claustrophobic environment, made for a very tense experience as you tried to sneak your way around and find the keys without getting attacked. The old-school vibe isn't to everyone's taste, as I can see from the number of people complaining about the controls, but I can see what you were aiming for and I think you've nailed it. Nice job!
