I liked your idea! I missed some music and sound effects but it worked really well.

Just a thing of game desing that can help: the iron and gold seemed to me an attack instead of something good. Maybe changing the way they arrive the earth (it seemed too fast, more similar to a missile than a coin) could reduce this effect.

Very fun and enjoyable game! Great job!

@bdiaztobarra Cool idea, I didnt even realize that while so much going on. Gonna fix it. Thanks!

I saw a preview of this game on my feed while I was working on mine and I knew I had to play it as soon as I could. It reminds me of old flash games, very nostalgic. I love the visual style and the little woosh of the cannon going by. I like the simplicity of the gameplay loop.

One of the things I noticed was that the game never really got any harder without upgrading, so there wasn't any extrinsic motivation for me to do so. When I did upgrade the game got way too hard all of a sudden and it wasn't fun anymore. But that's okay, considering how much time we have to work on these things, balance is the last thing on our minds.

I feel the game could benefit from a wave system, if you would choose to continue working on this game after LDJ50. It would fit the theme well (asteroids often come in waves, or showers), it would give the player time to make decisions in the upgrade menu, and it would give them time to mentally prepare for the onslaught of the harder difficulty of the next wave. This would be better than upgrading frantically between shots.

Overall a lovely game, well done.

@zack-hd thanks for your well constructed comment. And nice catch yes game gets harder when you upgrade your ship. I did that because I thought game is already hard on level 1 as well. It is easy to lose because it is inavitible 😂 But yeah I tried to do some optimization but it is still unbalanced.

thanks again, glad you liked it :)

Simple gameplay loop and well executed! I feel that the balancing could use some work as once I upgraded, the game suddenly got quite difficult, Nice job nonetheless!

While the idea is very simple I like the execution! It feels solid and polished for a jam game.

It took me quite a while to understand that you need to press Esc to buy upgrades. I would have expected some kind of level system where there is a pause between levels for you to buy upgrades. But the upgrade system itself was fun and I liked the upgrades you can buy for the turret.

Overall, a solid jam game and great art!

Fun game, I couldn't hear any sounds tho.

lisyarus 2022-04-05 09:35

Nice game! Agree with @zack-hd that it should become harder as you progress, and the resources could probably be used for something instead of being just a score (upgrades, better gun, several guns, automatic guns, drones, ...). Nice simplistic visual style. A few sound effects would make it feel much better!

graphically well polished, but the problem with the upgrade system which @zack-hd mentioned is a little problematic.

Nice and cozy base defence, but i have several questions. Game rly lacks some great soundtrack. Actually, toughness of asteroids on level 5 is really huge. Yow have a nice pew pew gun, but i couldn`t survive more than a minute))

lantto 2022-04-05 09:44

This is really nice! Moving your cannon on an arc gives the asteroid shooter concept a fresh feeling. I never got the nuke to work before I died but maybe I have to upgrade more.

Good graphics but I think some chunky sound effects would really do a lot for this type of game. If the game had more upgrades and weapons I could imagine myself coming back to it to play a few rounds now and then, so you're definitely on to something. Good job!

Nice game! Had a small issue with using the Esc button, because in web version it works as quitting the fullscreen mode

fractalsunrise 2022-04-06 04:55

I liked the look of this game, and it was fun to play! It would be better with more balancing, like having the asteroids get harder over time rather than as soon as I upgrade. Before I realized that's how the difficulty advanced, I would often lose soon after upgrading; I often upgraded multiple levels at once which ramped up the difficulty too much. I eventually found a sweet spot right after you get the triple shot that I could maintain for a while and collect iron and gold. Sometimes when I spent a lot of gold getting more damage and fire rate, it seemed like not much changed. I also couldn't click the Size upgrade button except for a thin region on the right side of the button. And sometimes, one of the asteroids would veer off course or come hurtling towards earth much faster than the others; it almost seemed as if the iron and gold were sometimes knocking into them. Despite the balance issues and the escape key not pulling up the menu when in fullscreen, I still really enjoyed this game. I especially liked the asteroid explosion effects and the gun whoosh as it moved, and I also appreciated how it was easy to tell what kind of metal was in each asteroid. Good job!

Ive seen a few concepts like this one but I quite like this setup of upgrades as well as the horizontal screen. Most of my thoughts have been said before but I do think something hit my planet off screen in my last run. Also, just a thought, making the asteroids slower but not move perfectly towards the gunfire is an option for balancing this making aiming and especially the projectile speed a larger factor. Either way, nice game!

Nice shot feeling, but i wanna listen some space sounds

frederikja163 2022-04-10 09:05

You should put a little thing in the corner telling people to press ESC in order to upgrade. The guide and all other text is too long for some people to read so having a little something in game to hint on how to upgrade would go a long way. You could also make it so we can click the earth to upgrade and make sure we know we can click on the earth etc.

Small things like that to give you information while playing the game is great.

eggland-games 2022-04-10 09:52

Really nice game. As mentioned before I also think that having some kind of level or wave structure might give a better feeling of progress to the player. I also noticed that it becomes harder if you buy upgrades which felt kind of weird. Of course is has to be more difficult because otherwise you could play forever.. Using levels with increasing difficulty might be a nice way out of this problem as well.

The Artwork is nicely done and the shooting feels good. Well done. :)

Pretty nice game! It felt like i was doing less damage with more upgardes but nice art.

Also i managed to do this:

Good little game. I had problem with the upgrade system, the game didn't really showed that I can upgrade, and the upgrades felt tom me like it was a nerf to my defending ability. the concept is good, and I enjoyed it while I played, but I put the game down in a few minutes. Anyways good game!
