I think the game itself it's pretty fun but would probably be 1000000 times better with some **particles**, to make the shooting, smashing and zombie deaths **more satisfying**
Foon → Ludum Dare Explorer → LD50 → Unapocalyptic

Fun game. I'm nitpicking here, but 2 frames of simple walk animation (for e.g. blocks at the bottom of the character displaced by a block for each frame) would change the feel of the player. Currently, the player feels like he is either on an invisible hoverboard, or an apparition gliding over land.
@zsharpfire Thanks for the feedback, will work on that
@d00kl1 It was a conscious decision at first to add as little animations as possible and use the most simplistic art style. Not sure where I was going with it, definitely will add an animation
@daniikk1012 to clarify, using minimal animation and simplistic art style is not the issue here.
The best art uses only what is necessary to convey what it needs to. When one strips away the 'visual noise', the scrutiny on the elements that remain will increase. In a game that uses a simplistic art style, the visual noise is limited or non-existent.
In this scenario, the animation, however simple it may be, separates the visual elements. The smooth movements of the zombies, comet and rockets belong to one group, let's call them group A (A for Apocalypse) with a similar motive: machine-like, efficient movement towards the target – the player.
In contrast, the player is different from group A. The player is a human running on a non-slippery grass surface; humans do not move like the members of group A. A small change in player animation, however minimal it may be, will reinforce that DIFFERENCE (the contrast).
In summation, if and when you add animation, please do so to reinforce the contrast, not just for animation's sake.
@d00kl1 Wow, thanks for the advice, that is really helpful
This game is enjoyable and pulls off the theme really well. I like the hammer animation and how smooth it feels. I am a fan of the simple art style, and the walking animation. Great entry!
Nice game. Comet, nuclear bombs and zombies are a lot for just a guy with a hammer and a gun :P It was fun to try it out. Few suggestions from my side:
- using Z and Space bar is a bit inconvenient, in my opinion. I would prefer more standard: Z and X or A and S (in general two buttons next to each other),
- adding different weapon/shoots and button for it for the comet and for the nukes,
- since the shooting sound effect is repeated over and over, because the player needs to shoot a lot, adding some variation to the sound would have been a nice improvement.
Anyway, good job with the game. I was able to get 121 points :)
I played for quite a bit, then died and the score screen was skipped due to me still hitting spacebar (and Z) :(
Also, while having to press spacebar for each hit with the hammer is fine, an autofire or at least while(Z) shoot(); would really reduce some finger pain. Especially on QWERTZ keyboards.
Other than that the game is quite fun for a few minutes.
Thanks for the feedback! @zimny11 @chriiis88 I was planning to add alternative controls, like WASD for movement, mouse clicks for smashing and shooting and so on, but completely forgot about that. Thanks for the reminder!
fun little game.. smooth.. with fitting art
Nice job u are cool!
This whole thing is really apocalyptic! Really nice idea and so original. I found it really entertaining. I played several times and it never becomes boring! It rather becomes addictive despite the stress! Also, the art is soooo cute! Nice game! I loved it!
Sweet and simple! Love it! The graphics are cute and the sound effects are fitting well with the style. The controls are layed out very logically, well done! Some thoughts:
- The shooting seems a bit overkill, maybe there could have been some cooldown after X bullets shot - The whack the zombies is fun, but could have been a bit more fun if they made some kind of sound when hit - I like how you are dropped into the game right away, this game does not need an menu indeed
Not bad! Really good concept and execution! The controls were a bit difficult to wrap my mind around and everything was pretty simple but to be fair that's pretty standard for game jams
@wouter52 Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! About the shooting - it is intentional. Mainly because it is more fun (At least I think so), but also because I want it to be possible to play this game forever with enough skill and CPS, and if there is a cooldown for shooting that is not possible because at one point there will be too many nukes or the comet will be moving too fast to even theoretically handle the situation. I agree about the zombies though, will add that later.
Look, I've seen quite a few "end of the world" games this jam, but none of them with so many different end of the world scenarios like this one haha Had a blast playing the game! I think the only think it's missing is a background soundtrack to sustain the mood, and maybe some other mechanics to make it even more chaotic, like a maybe jump, if you plan on expanding it post-jam!
@borabee Thanks, if I expand this game post-jam, I will definitely add more mechanics or even apocalypses. About the music - I am not a musician and using a song from internet for a compo game does not feel right.
