this is actually a pretty fun game. it sucks that you couldn't get the gun moving quite right but it still functions great. This is very similar to the game my team made and I honestly like yours better :) Good Job!

warmful 2021-04-28 07:32

I had a blast playing this game! :D

Took me a bit to get to the bottom

toxiccomputer 2021-04-28 10:37

@streetgeek @warmful Thank you guys so much! This really means a lot to me and im super glad you guys enjoyed it! After school I will be giving your games a try as well :D

kelvination 2021-04-28 12:49

This game was super fun! High speed, mechanical gameplay. The level generation is excellent, there were always spots for me to hide and use line of sight to my advantage. There were a couple times that I fell too far on the side view levels and couldn't reach the doorway, but that was easily solved with a quick reset.

The only 2 real issues I found were that the character is way too tall on the top down levels making it sometimes literally impossible to dodge the bullets flying at you, and if you are up against the wall, you can't shoot away from it because of the wonky gun rotation.

Overall, it definitely needs some polishing, but the game mechanics were great and this was one of the most fun games I've played in this jam! Awesome job!

toxiccomputer 2021-04-28 14:38

@kelvination Thank you for the feedback! Once the jam is over I will try fix a lot of these. Im super glad you had fun :D

knowledge 2021-04-28 18:02

I couldn't find a way to shoot. Is there any or it's not implemented?

flippingkun 2021-04-28 18:05

Good job!

toxiccomputer 2021-04-28 18:17

@knowledge You just click, make sure you opened the window and clicked on it first. If you are willing to re try the game I would much appreciate that!

@flippingkun Thank you! I hope you had fun ^^

yeppe 2021-04-28 21:17

Good job, fungame. I like that you made the character very fast, this made the gameplay feel so dynamic and fast paced.

fonics 2021-04-28 21:21

Fun game! The controls are snappy, the weapon feels great. The graphics do their job, the audio is nice if a bit loud (my games always have the same issue so i can't complain there ), my only small complaint is i wish there was a bit of visual feedback when the player gets hit. Otherwise great entry!

bobafett89 2021-04-28 21:26

This is a good game, fast and fun, also i liked art and sound design, though it would be better to make bullets of player more visible, because it blends with other bullets at first it's hard to understand if you are shooting or not. Well done!

knowledge 2021-04-28 21:54

Don't worry, I definitely intended to replay the game if I had missed such an important feature.

Core gameplay is quite fun but technical problems can really destroy the fun. Bugs are the most obvious ones. I couldn't fire from time to time. Level look's buggy, walls are sometimes strange.

Sometimes portal can appear at the beggining of the level. I would advise to either make sure that portal is generated at the "end" of level or require player to kill most enemies. Being able to finish the game without using guns clearly shows the need to change something about that. It was also a bit to easy to just frantically wander aroung the map and find portal (maybe add collision with enemies).

Player feedback is lacking. I understand that it is hard to polish games for LDJAM (I never succeed). Despite that it is important to provide visual/audio feedback for such fast game. I never had a feel about how much health I got. It almost seemed like I was randomly getting and losing health. Invisible guns reloading added to guns feeling buggy. I also often didn't notice when guns changed.

Platformer levels felt underutilised. Being able to regenerate room made me fell less in danger (especially because my health changed that way). Space key should be used for important and often used action like jumping in platformer part. By setting game-breaking action on such a key seems like mistake.

All that being said, I think your game is good. No one can polish everything in game jam and it is hard to predict such problems with so little playtesting available. Lack of time is a problem for everyone.

Maze generator is nice and promising. Even in this rudimentary and buggy stage it was fun to play the game, so you got fast paced shooting somewhat right (I would say you headed in the right direction with it) and you don't have to change that part of the game (just tweak some things to get pacing you want and it will be fun).

You definitely achieved something and your game could become nice full-fledged game.

toxiccomputer 2021-04-28 23:46

@yeppe Thank you! Really happy you had fun :D

@fonics That is a great suggestion, thank you for the feedback will add this post jam.

@bobafett89 That is also a fantastic suggestion, thanks for the feedback and im happy you had fun!

@knowledge Holy moly this is the best feedback I got ever, and is really gunna help me out post jam. Thank you so much for the feedback its gunna really help out! :D. By the gun not firing from time to time, did you happen to be standing in the "safe zone" when you space in a level? Like the 3x3 grid thing, because if so I disabled the pistol in that area so that the player couldn't shoot the enemies when they could not shoot the player. In any case I will look into this bug as it is really bad if it happens. Thank you for the feedback on the space bar as well, that will be really helpful. (Maybe I could add a grenade button as one of the upgrades haha). But yeah, im glad you found these bugs and issues, yet still had fun, your feedback was amazing and im happy to see that you would think this could be a full-fledged-game. Thank you!

veno501 2021-05-02 17:16

Core gameplay was pretty fun, but I had little trouble navigating the levels

mira 2021-05-02 17:23

Very interesting mix of Top Down and Side View games. The Top Down part looks very well, the event is a fast and an inexperienced player like I have a chance to pass through the Level. The Side View part invoke questins:"why is this here?". Maybe it would be a minigame in this xxx.5 Levels. I positively rate music, Gameplay and I think you hit well to theme.

aquasheep3000 2021-05-02 21:03

Nicely done! Great idea on the mix of top-down and side-scroll; you could really build on that and make a very unique game (which you already have, just you know, a bigger one, because I would like to see it!)

toxiccomputer 2021-05-02 23:53

@veno501 Im glad you had fun! I will try to work on generation post jam, as I do see that some levels are hard to navigate.

@mira Thank you for the kind words, im really glad you enjoyed the level generation! I really love your idea of having a mini game, so I will try to add it! Im really happy you enjoyed the music, I composed it and am really proud of it, but I opted out of the music category since I spent weeks making it before, so it would be against the rules for me to ask for ratings in that category. But yeah, super happy you liked it!

@aquasheep3000 Definitely want to expand on these ideas, since a lot of people seem to enjoy it. Im super happy you liked the mix of top down and side views! Thank you for the kind words.

khofez 2021-05-03 12:06

Nice entry!

toxiccomputer 2021-05-03 12:24

Thank you! @khofez

someone 2021-05-03 19:00

That was a fun, fast paced game. For some reason you cant shoot when touching the starting tile which was confusing. I'm guessing it was something to stop the AI from killing you the second you spawn, in which case the effect should either be disabled when you try to shoot, or the tile be highlighted a different colour. It was fun that the enemies could hit each other, I cleared most of a floor by running circles around them to make them kill each other. The gun position was a bit odd. The exit would often spawn somewhere inaccessible on the Gateway levels meaning I could not progress.

pxldev 2021-05-03 19:03

The game is really cool. I really like the mood the graphics give it.

toxiccomputer 2021-05-03 19:10

@someone Thank you for the feedback! Im glad you enjoyed it. The colored tiles idea is actually really good one, gunna have to add that post jam. (Also I disabled shooting for the reason you listed). Im sorry to hear about your experience with the Gateway levels, and my solution to that was a really cheap method of just restarting the room by pressing R, I couldnt come up with a solution in time unfortuantley. But I hope that didnt effect your experience too much with the overall game.

@pxldev Im glad you liked it :D

don-tnowe 2021-05-04 17:59

Felt too fast and chaotic at first, but ended up being just the right difficulty. Bullets looked impossible to dodge but it's not a problem because health is restored from kills! Smart.

Really enjoyed this experience and its pacing!

toxiccomputer 2021-05-04 18:29

Im glad you enjoyed it! @don-tnowe

janos-paradi 2021-05-06 11:51

really cool game, but why is the gun like this 😂

toxiccomputer 2021-05-06 11:59

I have no clue xD. I really have to change that after the jam, its a really weird gun position. Im glad you had fun! @janos-paradi

initialposition 2021-05-10 18:35

Nice game! I think switching between action packed top down and calmer, more platforming based sidescroller sections was a nice touch. The action was also mostly well balanced, except for the one complaint below where everyone suddenly had machine guns. The art was nice and simple and the music helped to keep the action going. The controls were also nice and fluid even though (as mentioned) the gun turning takes a bit to get used to.

So, here is my list of improvement suggestions. - As mentioned above, sometimes enemies become very very trigger happy. I am pretty sure they fire every frame once that happens. Of course, standing in that bullet stream for a second is basically a guaranteed death. - Some of the sidescroller rooms generate in a way where you can softlock by falling into a pit you can't get out of. I know I can press R to regenerate the room so this wasn't anything game breaking, just something you could fix if you wanted to. - Most of the time, you simply outrun the camera. You have to half blindly run into new rooms, hoping you won't be greeted by 20 enemies mowing you down. You could add an offset to the camera to always show a bit more in the direction the player is moving.

toxiccomputer 2021-05-11 11:52

@initialposition That is some great feedback! I was aware of the sidescroller room bug part, but I had no idea how to fix it before the Jam was over, so that was my half solution temporarily. Thank you for the feedback on the camera, I will definitally fix that! :D, as for the enemies, they green money ones have an SMG, which admitally do tend to fire pretty much every other frame which was a mistake on my part. So I will fix that as well after the jam. I will also be fixing the gun turning. Thank you for the feedback :D

kpded 2021-05-11 19:25

This looks like very ambitious project for the jam. So if we keep that in mind it looks quite well

I wish there were more visual difference between top down sidescroll modes and and pace could be not that fast, because sometimes one can completely miss the things happening to the screen

Overall very solid concept, well done!

tentaclemax 2021-05-11 20:37

Pretty fun

toxiccomputer 2021-05-12 20:24

@kpded Thank you for the feedback, I will try adding more graphical indication of the different modes. Glad you had fun!

@tentaclemax Thank you :)

automatonvx 2021-05-15 11:35

Like the concept and the driving music had me in the right mood but a few issues got in my way. I couldn't figure out why but sometimes I could shoot and sometimes not the amount of bulletes flying with a few enemies on screen was sometimes just way too much for me to have a hope of dodging I found the best strategy was just keep running around and let them kill themselves by blowing up up the oil drums and usually accidentally run into the exit. Would suggest not opening the exit till you have cleared the floor. Also I didn't understand the point of the in between limbo levels that change to platformer style. Especially as the sprites look the same it was pretty confusing to be suddenly falling due to gravity. Also could have used some visual feedback when I was getting hit because first of all I thought it was being buggy until I noticed the health at the top left. Anyway, fun for a bit marred by a few issues.

toxiccomputer 2021-05-15 14:43

Thank you for the excellent feedback! @automatonvx

chrisap 2021-05-17 22:40

I really like the idea of a "bullet hell" that is so fast paces it creates insanity, however it would benefit the player having a bit more area to move around and dodge the insane number of bullets. I liked the idea you had with using two different paradigms with the side view and top view but some more gameplay in the side view would take better advantage of it! Overall congrats on making a game by yourself!

toxiccomputer 2021-05-17 22:42

Thank you @chrisap !!

viperux 2021-05-18 12:42

Super fast game! So I tried to finish it in the fastest way possible (even using "cheats"). That's my score:

Immagine.png

The timer at the end was a good idea, it engourages you to play multiple times to beat your score. A shared leaderboard could be even better! Well done adding some sound, a lot of game lacks of it and the music were nice (unfortunately you removed the audio cathegory). I didn't find the side view section very useful... to regain calmness maybe next time let the player choose when to start each level (it's easier and you'll save time).

Like someone already mentioned, having bullets coming from out of the screen is a bit "disorienting". I also found that if you are close to the wall and your gun is into the wall it can't fire. Here is an example:

Immagine2.png

A smooth transition between the levels (maybe a fade out/in) could have helped to a better experience. Sometimes you are teleported from a level to another whitout really understand why XD

Overall a nice game with a lot of implemented mechanics (map generation, top/side view, enemies, upgrades, sound...), maybe too many for a single person in a weekend timespan... but you did it :-) Congratulations for your submit.

toxiccomputer 2021-05-18 16:26

Thank you for the feedback, and thank you for pointing out some bugs to me. I really liked your feedback and thank you so much for playing! @viperux
