The controls were wonky, felt like driving on ice

When my timer hit 0:00 on my second attempt, I was about to jump over a short barrier. My car landed on the top of the barrier and twitched its way backwards. It was quite funny. :joy:

The part of this game that stands out the most to me is the audio - well, both literally and figuratively. The music is great. It has a bit of a synth/8bit combination that works with the pixel-like 3D renditions of the cars and the overall colour scheme of the game. The part that stood out in a not-so-great way were the sound effects. They weren't bad; they were just EXTREMELY loud. Thankfully, there seemed to be only two sound effects that I heard throughout the entire game, but every time I got a speed powerup, it took me by surprise - even when I was expecting it! :rofl: There's also a bug where going to another tab after the round is over causes a super loud descending sq 25 jingle to play repeatedly when I go to another tab. Here's an example of what I hear:

The racing aspect did seem pretty unruly, but I think the fact that there were no outwardly frustrating penalties such as falling off the track (and into the beautiful purple grid void) put more emphasis on the challenge being to complete this looping race. It was a good thing too, because I definitely did feel the "ice" physics as mentioned in the previous comment. Thankfully, the course did not have too many sharp turns, and I never felt as though the ice-like physics *hindered* my progress, but I did find myself accelerating a lot right to the turn, then cranking it left or right.

I also discovered, by accident(?), that you can shoot bullets by clicking on the screen? I didn't see any mention of this in the game or on the game page - maybe I missed it. Is there any purpose for shooting? I thought, at first, it could be used to destroy obstacles, but none of them seemed to be affected by my bullets.

Overall, I enjoyed this as a relaxing, racing game. It feels chill, despite racing against the clock. The racecar track approach was a good basis for the theme, and I love the idea of the track adding obstacles gradually with each lap.

@benbennett @random-storykeeper

yeah, the "icy" handling is probably not quite what it should be. i'm waffling on whether to fix that or if switching out the handling mechanics for something different would be considered too much of a new feature.

similarly on the sound effects - i could probably adjust the volume down a bit, no problem, but there were also a few sound effects that i ended up just commenting out in the code entirely because they were not working properly with like 2m left before the jam deadline.

the shooting mechanic is a vestigial leftover from earlier in the jam, when there was more destructibility planned that unfortunately didn't quite make it in due to some technical difficulties with unity. i could probably just remove that, since that's not really adding anything to the game at this point.

thanks for the feedback!

I really liked the visuals in the game and the audio was awesome! The cars were tough to control, but as you play more you sort of get the hang of it. It would have been cool to have a way to get more time and have a high score (number of laps you were able to complete), but overall it was a fun game with a really cool atmosphere that kept you going.

I thought the idea and presentation were great, but the driving mechanics deifnitely needed more work. It got more interesting once I realized braking allowed me to turn sharper, but overall it still felt too hard to control. I wanted to speed but couldn't.

Good use of the theme, I like that each loop added new obstacles.

Interesting driving mechanic... felt like drifting... even when going straight! Definitely has some potential. Little things like actually spinning the wheels would add a lot visually. Also, the "jumps" were hard to clear as you just came out of a turn and it's hard to get up enough speed to start clearing 2 or 3 at a time. For what you did in the time limit, good job!

I really like those graphics. Controls felt slightly undesirable. I had fun being able to jump over stuff.

Really cool game! But on every turn the car would slide. Jumping was very good!

Cool game. Nice graphics and music, it was little bit hard to control the car but overall I enjoyed playing!
