This is a really cool concept. Its simple to understand the game. I recommend you to add some sound effects and more enjoyable elements on the game. Overall its a really nice experience.

I love the classic look of the computer and the label that says "dads" haha. What was the planned feature for the computer I wonder? Good job completing your first jam.

jrap 2020-04-27 23:45

Aw yeah! I didn't get .... eaten? Worse? I like the bright presentation and sense of looming danger from that creepy plant >:)

@thebreakfast - Thanks for the feedback! The plan for the computer was a stock broker buy/sell screen that would let you make money to feed the plant, and ultimately choose to buy whatever food you want to buy it. Glad you noticed the "Dads" art-- that is my first real, in-game pixel art and your comment made me quite happy! :)

davidwesst 2020-04-28 06:11

@abiral -- Completely agree. Started down that path, and got caught up in just getting it working. Hopefully I'll get an updated version out there after the jam is complete.

Thanks for the feedback!

madbarron 2020-04-28 16:27

Funny concept, and good writing. It would obviously be nice if there was more "game" or choices involved :) but congrats on finishing your first jam!

davidwesst 2020-04-29 04:06

Thanks @madbarron! Very appreciated. :v:

goldfish-games 2020-04-30 15:10

Ha, we both did very similar topics... both Little Shop of Horrors-based. :P

fajpaj 2020-04-30 15:10

Funny writing. I wish there were more choices to be made. I think there are some different outcomes based on how much you feed the plant, but perhaps some more complexity could have made it more game-ey. Congrats on your first jam though, and I hope you do more in the future.

davidwesst 2020-04-30 15:25

Thanks @fajpaj! I've actually continued working on the game since the end of the jam, and things are already getting better. Hoping to participate in the next one too and get a more complete entry. Thanks for the feedback and for playing!

I quite enjoyed this; once you figure out that it eats 50 food a day and it eats a family member if it hits zero then you can begin to figure out the tactics (I managed to get three endings). Unfortunately I'm not sure it's possible to actually get more than one family member to survive (because of the day where you couldn't find any food); it would be intersting to be able to use the computer to somehow earn/obtain the food for the day via some sort of minigame.

kekkodude 2020-04-30 15:36

Interesting resource management, he seemed pleased with cheeseburgers so i wish i could have brought one every day. My poor family suffered greatly while i was watching this devious plant.

oxters 2020-04-30 16:13

Currently the game is lacking, but still fun. I think it has potential to be a nice game. It kind of reminds me of Papers Please, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

davidwesst 2020-05-02 18:53

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

@amkingtrp -- I've hit that snag too. It's because the game (as it is now) is very RNG heavy, so you have to hope for the best rolls when you get some food. Post-jam version should give you the ability to earn money (that's what the computer was supposed to be for) so you can earn what you can and then buy the food necessary.

@kekkodude -- Hahaha! That's awesome. I feel for your in-game family too. :)

@oxters -- Thanks! I think the potential is there too. I think my team's brain was bigger than the time we had to commit. I've continued working on it post-jam, and hope to have a much more final version ASAP for those interested.

davidwesst 2020-05-02 18:54

@goldfish-games -- Only the greatest minds come up with similar ideas. :)

jdk2209 2020-05-03 18:45

It's a cool concept, but not very polished. It could really use some extra feedback and sound but it does have potential. Congrats on making a game <3

starerik 2020-05-03 22:51

Oddly enough, this was the second Little Shop of Horrors-esque game in this jam I've come across. Haha! As a major Little Shop of Horrors fan I just had to play it. It's a nice concept, but I would have liked it to be more fleshed out. Animations, or just more stuff to do. And sound, of course. Well done, though!

davidwesst 2020-05-04 03:53

@jdk2209 Totally agree. Been working through some post-jam polish to understand what it takes to put together are polished entry for the next jam. Thanks for playing!

davidwesst 2020-05-04 03:55

@starerik Haha! That's fantastic. Was saying to @goldfish-games how only the greatest devs love Little Shop of Horrors and make games that resemble the original idea.

Thanks for the feedback too! Was thinking about animations, and now I'm attempting to learn them post-jam to polish this thing up. Hopefully next jam, I'll have the skills and knowledge to know if my ideas are bigger than my skillset. :)

Sound is a must for sure. Thanks again!

stanov 2020-05-09 14:39

I wasn't really sure what was my goal in the game. Then I realized that I have a choice NOT to feed the plant :) And the second ending was reached :)

I suppose that you are quite new to making games, so I'll rate the game accordingly. It seems you had a lot of fun while creating it :)

I liked the graphics! The bluring mechanism is pretty neat :)

I liked the controls, they are quite straightforward and they were explained in the game! I appreciate that a lot, keep doing it!

It's a pity that there are no sound effects or music. It would add a nice touch to the game :)

Thanks for uploading, keep going!

And thanks for playing my game!

davidwesst 2020-05-11 22:06

@stanov I am pretty new to making games and thanks for playing my own little creation.

Sound was definitely something that I won't miss again. I didn't realize how much effort going the distance for LD would be. Next time around I'm hoping to be a bit more organized and make sure I have time for the music and sound (I actually wrote a little looping song, but couldn't get it into the game).

Again, very much appreciate the feedback. See you around the jams. :)

kristinamay 2020-05-12 03:25

I liked this game. I especially liked the dialogue. Well, "dialogue"? The text in the game. And the plant just hanging out and family members mysteriously going missing... hah. It was a bit confusing at first because I thought that a low number was *good* for plant hunger... and then I found out. :D
