Pretty fun game, i wish pieces falled a little bit faster but its ok

sir-galloy-de-fierpate 2019-10-14 12:43

Nice game, but without the sound. The falling blocks are a little bit annoying, but I love the concept of trying to survive a brat playing Tetris. Keep on coding ^^

I really like this, a nice idea, although not necessarily hugely relevant to the (terrible) theme. It would be nice if the game could recognise when you're trapped and trigger game over.

bernhard 2019-10-23 15:29

Thanks for playing everyone!

@madbeagle It does recognize it but in a very crude way (once it fills up a line above the player). I wish I have had time to make it more clever.

Interesting concept. I liked the idea but for some reason I felt like I had to spam space and most of the time the character refused to jump, so it was really really hard to play for me. Left and right keys worked fine. I ran it on Firefox v69 / Windows 10, if that helps.

I really liked this game! :) Never thought of combining a platformer with Tetris. The great thing is that the game gets even more interesting when you get the double and triple jumps, which quickly become new motivations to go higher. Great job! :D

@local-minimum Thanks for playing! I just tried in Firefox 68 and 70 on Win10 as well and space bar jumping and double jumping all worked perfectly fine. But I remember during testing a single time I had a weird unresponsive jump and I thought my keyboard was dirty or broken but then it never happened again. If you have another browser available could you maybe try it? And if anybody else has that happen, a comment would be appreciated! I'm sure the downloadable Windows build is fine.

It worked well on Edge for some reason. Well, now that I could get some where, I feel like it could become a really fun addicting game, but there are two conflicting issues for me. One is that sometimes I just had to wait without having much to do and sometime I felt like I lost because I was unlucky and the bricks just dropped on my head too quickly. And without warning. Without getting enough time to react. The latter would kind of be fine if it was much later in the game and you were now supposed to be an expert. The suddenness could be addressed with having the pieces appear at the top a short while before they drop. The first issue, I'm not so sure what would be the best course of action. Maybe if the player could push blocks around based on some rules? I'm not sure. Or just gain points for moving around and jumping up and down different block levels?

@local-minimum Thanks for the great feedback and trying in Edge, nice to know that it runs fine there!

Most time of development was spent on making the randomness less unfair, making it more fun would be the next step for sure.

During play testing and after release I developed some strategies that can get me to around level 100 once every few rounds.

I always try to get on the highest level and perform a jump as big as possible to scroll the screen as high as possible to see blocks appearing earlier. Having blocks show up first as a warning before dropping would have been a great improvement.

Also mastering the tripple-jump to leave ones position under a dropping block and getting around and on top of it all in air is sometimes required after level 50.

Speaking of moving blocks around, I once made a physics based game similar to this, [Puzilla](https://zillalib.github.io/games/?Puzilla) :-)

Really fun and inventive! I definitely liked that it told me that I would get new abilities at certain levels - it made me want to try harder to get to them. Also, that feeling when you're about to get smashed by a block so you sprint out of the way.... into a deep chasm that you can't climb out of. :face_palm:

milta 2019-10-23 20:45

Funny game, but the part of random is high... That's a good game !

rplnt 2019-10-23 20:46

Just my kind of game! My first attempt was actually my best so far. Very good controls, was fun to play it. The music was good and fit in well. The falling sound got a bit too much after a while.

Very fun game - and great twist on Tetris. Somehow, the jump is not really working for me at times, which makes it tedious to play..

jonno 2019-10-25 15:49

Simply put: Superb. My only criticism would be to maybe have options to turn the border off (distracting) and the screen shake, as that made me feel a bit ill after playing for awhile. I can also see this being fun as a 2 player game, where the other player plays traditional Tetris, trying to block in the first player, or possibly a co-op. 5*s all round. Well done!

bernhard 2019-10-25 15:58

@jonno Thanks for playing my game! Regarding both of the distracting elements, as usual at first was nothing then it was too bland, then I ended up with maybe a bit too much. Somewhere in the middle might have been great :-) Thank you for the the kind comment and rating!! :bow_tone3:

Yep, and people used to tetris might get disoriented when they can't move the pieces, so the long horozontal one flattens you, and then that trapped thing.

teo989 2019-10-25 17:16

Nice idea to combine tetris with a game like this! I just wish the jump was more responsive. Sometimes when I press space nothing happens. And the camera shake effect is cool but you could maybe make it a bit milder but thas“s just a small toutch. Well done  :tokyo_tower:

bernhard 2019-10-25 17:26

@teo989 Thanks for playing and commenting! User LocalMinimum above also had a problem with the space-bar input. Are you also on Firefox on Windows 10? I really have no clue why only the space-bar acts weird. I'm using an original gamedev framework so I'd really like to fix this!

teo989 2019-10-26 15:30

@bernhard I was playing it on windows 10 but on chrome. Maybe that's the cause of the issue

kothead 2019-10-28 17:54

I liked the idea and I think that it is really neat use of the theme. As for randomness, IMHO it gives quite similar gameplay with roguelike games. Sometimes it is in player's favour, sometimes it is not. But nevertheless it is fun. Good job!
