A game about a gardener. Food goes to minus

frozencow 2019-10-08 09:34

It was a bit hard to get to know how the game works, but in the end figured it out. Cool concept and the game looks very good.

I don't understand what do I do to get food in this game (help does not scroll). But also I can't loose no matter if food goes below zero :) So I end up just clicking around and looking at the crops grow.

Nice work! I think I had a bug where none of my dudes went "unconscious" upon going into negative food, but then I can't imagine any way to grow enough food fast enough for one to be able to keep up with demand anyway :-D I get that you have like, slow-growing seeds and then fast-growing (but non-nutritious) seeds, and then you need to cross breed them into fast-growing-nutritious stuff, which is super neat! For a jam project it definitely shows potential: you just need to have stuff like "explore the planet to find new plants with new seeds to crossbreed!" and "this plant needs X amount of moisture/this kind of ground, and this plant needs this kind of ground" etc to make it deeper and more complex. But yeah, great concept, and well done!

I really liked your game. Good graphics and interesting mechanics. At the beginning, I was a little confused, because I thought that you are supposed to command the people. When I figured the controls out, I ended up with -66 fod :) Maybe next time add a tutorial explaining the control, not just the mechanics (which was nontheless very useful and well integrated into the game). Overall good game.

an ambient sound would be nice and that minus thing

daniiln 2019-10-08 09:53

Food goes into minus. The help window does not scroll. It’s not clear how to play

teslov 2019-10-08 09:57

Hey guys, first things first. Sorry for the scroll issue, I never use Google Chrome so it didn't occur to me that something like this might not work. It's sadly to late to fix this issue so if you want to check it out I suggest trying with Firefox.

As for the food going on minus and your crew not hibernating. I didn't add this feature because I wasn't sure of balancing and wanted to make potential players focus on breeding mechanic without making their action count lower. So just use your imagination here for now :P

Updated the game description to include whole helpbook. Thanks for heads-up.

loved the idea and it was awesome to play when I figured it out. Very nice, sad its not finished.

onury 2019-10-13 14:19

I like the idea, you should finish the game.I think 4 actions does not enough.Maybe We could able to hire new team members to increase actions per turn. yw.png

teslov 2019-10-15 09:18

@onury That was exactly the idea :P SB-03 is a colonization ship with ability to quickly produce clones based on genetic information stored in its database. Gameplay loop was supposed to be about getting more colonist to up actions limit and at the same time produce more food to afford more colonists.

oddsocks 2019-10-18 09:28

Oh man, I love this game. Phenomenal entry. :raised_hands:

jandourek 2019-10-18 11:07

The idea here is pretty good. As others have mentioned, it's quite hard to keep your food in the positive, but the breeding mechanic is pretty fun. I would definitely want to see more seeds with different stats.

phi 2019-10-18 19:03

Awesome, I love it! Simple enough to understand quickly, but complex enough to keep me interested for some time!

Possible minor improvements:

- have a "compost" button besides each seed, so bulk-deleting seeds isn't as tedious - have some way of telling when a plant is fully grown (I was never quite sure at the beginning) - the "scan" feature could be a hover thing instead of a separate tool (since it doesn't use up an "action" anyway), so you don't have to click as much - the scroll wheel wasn't working for me, which was kind of annoying (don't know if that was intentional)

Also, it would be really nice to have some more diverse graphics, so it's easier to identify the different mutations.

The game did become quite easy after some time, but the fact that I played for so long is indicative of how fun it is! :D
